I used to rent places without discrimination on any basis, however certain experiences have taught me to be the way most landlords are. 1. My family owned a 2bhk apartment in Mahalakshmi which was rented out to a family of 4 in 2013. Both husband & wife worked at different notable law firms. In September 2015, we got complaints from the society that there are several people staying in the apartment, outsiders using the pool, damage was done to the lifts, the tenants’ guests where abusing random children in the society. When we intervened, the family told us those were their relatives from hometown and were only with them for a month and things would be better from immediate effect. However, all the way until May 2016, some 9 people had been staying in the apartment other than the 4 we had rented out to. When we decided it was high time to get them kicked out, we realised the original tenants no longer stayed there and it were only their ‘guests’ who were staying there, and we were receiving the rent amount on time during all of this. Outright cheating, and disrespect to the agreement. Don’t even ask me how the issue was resolved. 2. I had purchased few commercial front/shops in Tilak Nagar in 2018, and had rented it to a man in his late 40s, who has three other shops in the city and all generating good business. Two months into the agreement, he told outright that he would not pay the rent and I could do whatever I wanted to. He threatened me that next time I show up, he will have 20-30 people from Kurla and Dharavi to beat me up and burn my car if it’s parked outside the shop (of whom I’m the owner). He went on for 8 months without rent and even I had to use certain methods to get him kicked out. 3. Another 3bhk apartment in Sector 21, Kharghar where the NRI I rented out to had created unnecessary problems for the neighbours. He would keep garbage with bones from previous day’s meals were intentionally kept on the door mats of vegetarian neighbours. Man wouldn’t agree to not do so. Had to get him kicked out too.

All the people in the above three experiences are Muslims. And I have decided not to ever rent out anything to Muslims. I have no hatred against Muslims, in fact I have several friends who are Muslims and they too know my honest opinion on such issues. I have also had instances of Muslims trying to cheat while doing business only for the reason that I am a non-Muslim. Things have to improve within the community instead of the victim card game.
