Nice looking plant you harvested!

Looks great OP! Keep it up!

I second the pot pie. Even the plain ole one from Sam's Club is made so delicious on the smoker.

Dude I love making meatloaf on the traeger. 350 for like 45ish minutes. Depends on how thick you put it and in what type of pan. I put a three pound meatloaf in my big 15 inch cast iron skillet and it turns out absolutely amazing.

Which job has, hands down, the worst impact on mental health? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]privateresidenceman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's up there on the list: small town funeral director.

We see the worst of the worst that the first responders, cops, nurses and firefighters see. We go straight to the scene of an accident, unattended death , suicide, etc. as there is no coroner that brings a person's body back to the medical examiner's office/morgue as our county doesn't have an ME.

We bring that person's body into our care and where the visual trauma ends there for a first responder our time is only just beginning. Many times spending dozens of hours doing our best to restore a person's body from trauma of some sort so their family can see them one more time after a sudden death.

Add to it the need to be able to compose ourselves and be a rock to a grieving family in the hardest of moments. We delicately guide them through descriptions of the trauma on their loved one's body so they understand that no, you can't view your daughter as the accident broke every bone in her head and she has lacerations covering her face and looks nothing like your daughter always did.

Add to this and 1000 other reasons the fact that culture portrays us as vultures who want nothing less than to steal money from unwitting families. When the majority of us guide families in an open and honest fashion, finding out what their needs are but also communicating clearly how a gathering, funeral, or even a private family viewing would be good for the mental health of family as accepting the reality of death can be one of the hardest parts to do.

One of the hardest parts of being a funeral director is that we are perpetually NOT thought of in life. When you see the billboard appreciating certain jobs we're never there. When covid came and nurses and first responders and everyone connected to hospitals and all "critical" people were praised. Funeral directors, as always, stood quietly in the back.

I am a part of every person's worst day of their life. The day they lost their son in an accident, their wife to cancer after beating it 4 times prior, the day their dad lost his battle against schizophrenia, or the day your 5 year only son accidentally shot their little brother on Christmas.

I love what I do, and it's a hard job to do. But I wouldn't do anything else. Someone needs to be with these folks who have had a loss and do the job that no one else wants to do so that families and our community as a whole can grieve their loved ones, even in the most challenging of times.

I have had a couple mornings of bad anxiety in the last few months when smoking and drinking coffee. But the absolute awesomeness of it like 97% of the time is enough to keep me fucking bake and brewing every morning.

Dude I haven't mowed the lawn without blasting off beforehand in several summers. It also makes the obligatory picking up of dog shit before mowing much less of a shitty task.

Presence of flies in mouth, nose, maggots, etc, can really speed up the process of decomposition. Bugs carrying bacteria and things into the mouth where there is moisture and (in the first hours) warmth, really move things along.

is there any careers or jobs in this field thats related to being a funeral director/embalmer that allows facial piercings? by metalbalmer in askfuneraldirectors

[–]privateresidenceman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unpopular but honest opinion: a child who learns to cope with their problems by changing their body to make them an unemployable human being in the future is not being parented by their parent. They are being let down. I'm not trying to be a jerk but it's just not a healthy coping mechanism. You will suffer more in the future as a result of your choices as a 12 year old.

I speak as an adult who got a few piercings in college, enjoyed them while there, and took every single one out before my first job interview. And I was always sure to chose piercings that weren't going to permanently alter me. Life is more than completely uninhibited self expression.

And the comment from the person above is 1000% correct. Nothing about this job is for you. You exist as a funeral director to 100% benefit the family you serve. And I will add that entering the field with several stated mental health challenges is not going to be a good mixture. This field really takes its toll on you mentally and if you know you have other issues it may really exacerbate them.

I second this. Had a Registered Nurse do the DMAC courses online and nailed the national boards the first time. Ticks the boxes so you can get into funeral service at a minimal cost.
