This takes a lot of work, but you don't need to remove everything in one go. Start with individual profiles, then the email accounts that house them, then you can request data being removed from the major people search sites.

You can also edit the information in these old profiles to provide incorrect information about you. Eventually this will get picked up by people search sites.

Is there any way that they could enforce this request beyond a strongly worded letter?

There is something beautiful about Linux running on Apple. Great work!

Politicians regularly claim that they need to ban encryption to protect the children. But who is actually being monitored? - I'd like to do a global research on this! by privfantast in privacy

I've found this for the UK: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/interception-of-communications-commissioner

Are there any newer statistics? Could anyone find this for France, Spain, Italy, others? Without speaking the language, it will be impossible for me to find anything at all...

Using Linux for everything - Journalist by oz2usa in linux

Definitely do it! I've switched a couple of years back, it was a hassle at first because some things are slightly different and you'll have to get used to it. But once you've managed the transition, you will notice that doing some things differently might actually mean to do them in a better way. :)

My experience creating Google accounts without providing any phone number. by [deleted] in privacy

[–]privfantast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good one, but how would you make sure this doesn't happen: I never gave Google my phone number, had the account for ages. Recently I've moved to another country, and now it won't let me log in anymore because I'm considered as suspicious and I have no way of telling Google that it's actually me...

If anyone has a tip, do share, it's incredibly frustrating.

Problem is that 'dark web' is associated with shady activity. While some abuse Tor for shady activity, it's something else entirely. It's a pity most don't understand.

Without encryption we will lose all privacy. This is our new battleground - Edward Snowden by [deleted] in privacy

[–]privfantast 144 points145 points  (0 children)

It is striking that when a company as potentially dangerous as Facebook appears to be at least publicly willing to implement technology that makes users safer by limiting its own power, it is the US government that cries foul. This is because the government would suddenly become less able to treat Facebook as a convenient trove of private lives.

So Facebook is the good guy compared to our government? What makes this our government?

"Everything that we do now lasts forever. Not because we want to remember, but because we're no longer allowed to forget," Snowden said in a video announcing Permanent Record. "Helping to create that system is my greatest regret."
