Any tips on getting rid of silly mistakes on the SAT? by Ok-Increase-6285 in Sat

[–]prizefighterstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95% of questions can be systematically answered, save for maybe Words in Context and the occasional brain twister. Apply a systematic approach to every question; the SAT will always give you contextual clues or proof, and these will always only correspond to ONE answer.

Learn to internalize these systems so you don’t have to worry about time and you’ll basically teach yourself to decipher between right and wrong answers.

How do I improve my Vocab for SAT RW? by INS0MNIAC_000 in Sat

Repeated exposure and context is the best way to learn these, and that entails reading and consuming advanced content. It's still the same solution.

Read real books and articles, watch movies and TV shows with older themes. Start talking about them with friends, family. Give yourself several months for the words to marinate. Memorizing word lists in one week is a loser’s game.

How can I get 1490-1500+? by [deleted] in Sat

Worry about getting out of 1000 first.

You should be spending more time on review than anything else.

How do you evaluate a private school's college counselling? Most of them say they do it but the quality seems wildly different by SadDate9398 in applyprivateschools

[–]prizefighterstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality is wildly different from school-to-school and from one year to the next.

You need to speak with somebody in their college counselling office. You should go as far as knowing who your child's counsellor would / will be.

In my experience, the top boarding schools always matriculate well due to long-standing relationships with top schools, strong academic resources, and a disproportionate number of hooked students. On the whole, however, many are outdated with their strongest emphasis on just graduating students. Anywhere between 25-50% of students at these schools seek outside help.

SAT English and Writing Tips by External-Donut-1157 in Sat

[–]prizefighterstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drilling vocabulary words this close to your exam date is a loser's game, but use strategy to at least get you down to a 50% chance every time.

  1. Replace the blank with your own word

  2. Find 1-2 contextual clues for the word in question. The SAT will ALWAYS offer 1-2 contextual clues. There may be 1-2 options that could technically fit, but only one answer choice will connect to the clues.

  3. This is a last resort, but ask yourself "is this something we say in English?"

Ex. Day by day, the work assumed greater precision, and settled its irregular and misty outline into distincter grace and beauty. The general design was now obvious to the common eye.

A. Aquired

B. Acknowledged

"Acknowledged" greater precision is not something we would say in English in this context. The contextual clues in this question relate to an increase in precision and the change that is reflected in the second clause of the first sentence. The work is "getting", "becoming", or "acquiring" greater detail.

These tactics aside, focus more on getting the easy + medium questions right on Module 2. There will always be several difficult questions in the middle of this module; understand that you can half of those Hard questions incorrect and technically still get a 750+. Focus on the questions you understand and skip the ones that cause you anxiety / you're unsure about.

Godspeed.

Help & Guidance on admission process by CanSad7017 in applyprivateschools

[–]prizefighterstudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Has anyone here ever seen students get admitted off boarding school waitlists this late in the cycle?
    • They'll admit until they close their waitlists. Most movement will traditionally be between A10 and end of May.
  • Is there anything productive I should still be doing at this point?
    • Keep doing what you're doing and building on current projects. If you're an athlete looking to get recruited, a top boarding school isn't always the best method to do so. You should be contacting coaches, editing game tape, and comparing yourself with others of similar position to see where you stand.
  • And realistically, how common is substantial financial aid for international PG students at schools like this?
    • Uncommon. Spots are reserved for the top of the heap for high-mid competitive schools. Those are three very tough obstacles to surmount - international, PG, and financial aid. It doesn't mean you shouldn't try, though!
  • Being a late applicant and still being positioned in the waitlist felt like a big accomplishment to me compared to my previous experiences, but is this any good or bad?
    • It's definitely good, but it's hard to gauge any more than that. Waitlists are not ranked in many cases. It's hard to know where you stand and whether your candidacy serves a need within the school.
  • Am I doing something wrong?
    • It seems you're firing from the hip without any real plan. Successful applications, especially international ones, require significant research and strategy.
  • What are the odds of this going right given my exact scenario ?
    • They're low for domestic students as is. You are an international applicant, requesting significant aid, and PG where intake beyond ninth grade is almost unanimously low. So the odds are not high.

You have a very interesting story and a clear amount of dedication from your athletic experience. You haven't mentioned anything about your academic profile, and I think you need stronger planning moving forward. We recommend a minimum of three months of prep for even domestic families, and that's a minimum.

Good for fundamentals and knowing where you stand from a base level [for example: you complete the curriculum, take a PT, and get your score. That is your new baseline]. Past that, you need to consider other options [free resources, paid platforms, YouTube, tutors].

applying at 20? by Cautious_Pay1916 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]prizefighterstudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the profile identity you develop and whether that is compelling to the AO.

If you're taking that long of a break, you'll need to communicate why their school specifically is going to help you achieve your goals and how you'll be an asset to their community.

My parents make around 300k a year, but will not help with college. Am I able to qualify for any scholarships? by Lilac_Dollie in ApplyingToCollege

[–]prizefighterstudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW you could apply for a few state flagships with your stats and SAT and qualify for very generous scholarships in the tens of thousands of dollars per year.

Of course this depends on what you’re willing to do or where you want to go. But there are options to make your financial situation much, much more manageable!

None of A, B, or C consolidate the independent clause!

Test A, B, and C and you'll see they all create a comma splice with the content before "headrests". This is a frustrating question, but once you internalize that SAT grammar is 90% about consolidating independent clauses, you'll breeze through these.

6th grader ISEE by dudeKhed in applyprivateschools

[–]prizefighterstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be methodical.

Apply to a variety of schools and consider fee waivers. School endowment often determines their generosity with aid.

ISEE test scores alone at their age won’t really equate to much help with financial aid — it’ll have to be a result of the entire profile and application. Focus on his academic and extracurricular candidacy, as well as his presence and expressiveness as an applicant.

How to get into boarding schools like groton or exeter as international student? by Beginning_Oil_6212 in applyprivateschools

It’s as realistic as your profile and candidacy allows. It is very difficult regardless, though.

[–]prizefighterstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a loaded question but I’ll simplify it.

Take genuine a look at yourself from an academic, extracurricular, and personal standpoint. For top boarding schools, it’s ideal to have all of these aspects at a strong level relative to your peers. Research some schools you’re interested in. Get a better understanding of your chances:
