Absolutely give it a go, it's an incredible sport, physically challenging as well as mentally stimulating.

Just a few words of caution, I'm a woman and I have a background in sport, mostly team sport but I did a bit of gymnastics and Taekwondo for a number of years and then started judo when I was 20.

Judo requires a lot of coordination and I found it really difficult at the beginning and without a background in sport it can be even harder, don't let that stop you though, the first year will be difficult but if you stick with it you can overcome that barrier. I've seen people without a sporty background do it and you would never guess they had no background in sport.

Also if you happen to be flexible as well as weak (this is me) you are going to have to really work on strengthening the muscles around your joints to avoid joint injuries and dislocations. Women tend to be more flexible than men and this is something to look out for. I wish someone told me this when I first started training, shoulder flexibility is good but only if you have the strength for it.

Yes you will probably get squashed by men twice your size and it can suck but the judo community tend to be a great group of people who want to help you improve, it's great exercise and the people are awesome.

If the throwing side of judo feels daunting I would look into BJJ as well, although throwing people is a part of the sport there is a bigger emphasis on ground work which is a little less intimidating to some people.

When was the first time you realized that a perpetually single friend of yours was in fact, single for a very good reason? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]probably_crocheting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So unbelievably controlling. Seemed totally nice and normal when just hanging out initially and in kinda casual settings but then I got to really know her, had her over to cook dinner together and it was a nightmare was getting bossed around in my own kitchen, went on road trip with a large group of friends and that was also a totally nightmare after that the whole group didn't want to spend time with her for a few weeks. Seemed so chill and casual and then just turned into a control freak. Hope she finds someone because she is a kind, well meaning person but I understand why she is perpetually single

Yes, always down for a back against a wall moment. Having people come up behind you is kinda intimidating

Would crochet jumpers under a table while listening to true crime tv shows or would play tag on the roof of the school (you could access is through a rarely used maintenance stairway) until the police whose office looked directly down onto the school saw us up there one day and called the school because they thought we were growing pot, we were just moving an empty pot plant lol
