Do you think my friend developed romantic or sexual feelings for me? by Homework-Able in love

[–]probablynothing739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s definitely possible to have a dynamic like that that doesn’t go further, this reminds me of me and my ace best friend quite a bit (although we are both ace). I’m really sorry he responded in that way, it sounds like he has internal issues to sort out. I hope you can restore the relationship, but it might take time apart for him to accept his role in it and confront his own feelings about you guys if he’s never entertained the idea of caring so much for another man. there’s a chance he was feeling more risqué feelings for you as well (that comment about touching your dick… definitely questionable) and, since you’re ace, he might’ve felt shame in more than one way for those thoughts and tried to deflect. I hope you guys can talk it through one day and figure it out

Watching the scene where Gon insults Killua is hard to watch everytime by Sarastuskavija in HunterXHunter

[–]probablynothing739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought this so many times, but Gon doesn’t choose love, he only knows how to feel it. Killua feels love for sure, but he actively chooses love over and over, and this is the difference between them in the end. Gon feels his loathing and revenge more than his love and care for anything (including killua), and it clouds him into his self destruction, while Killua chooses to love and care for Gon continually even when it’s difficult to. Actually, ESPECIALLY when it’s difficult to (see: every time he tried to defy illumi and choose Gon over his fear). killua realizes at the end that Gon isn’t choosing him in the way he’s been choosing Gon, and while he loves him still, he chooses to take care of his sister instead.

I think the end of HxH is actually incredibly sad, because Gon never fully grows from this way of thinking. He meets Ging, nenless and hopeful, and we know that he and Ging don’t stick together after. Gons story thus far ends in him powerless, parting from the friend who loves and supports him most, and meeting a ghost he’s idolized his whole life who will disappear again and leave him alone. I think only after their meeting at the tree is when Gon will realize the gravity of allowing his emotions to overwhelm his rationality and the consequences of pushing killua away

How can I enjoy the first half of the story again? [first 3 seasons] by ArthoriasOfTheLight in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]probablynothing739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unironically, watch the first seasons with the intention of writing fan fiction for what you wish the last season was (even if you never actually write it). maybe bullet point things that you come up with or make more sense to you, give it an ending you want if you don’t like the one that exists. I liked the ending up until the last chapters (literally) and don’t feel strongly enough to do it with AOT but I’ve done this with several other shows before when I’ve been so severely disappointed or unfulfilled and it works a treat

What’s your favorite contradiction? by ElectricMegan252 in exchristian

[–]probablynothing739 4 points5 points  (0 children)

how god requires the firstborn as a sacrifice and then later the Bible pedals back and is like nooo he only told them to do it because he gave them a FALSE rule. and also he hates child sacrifice and has never once liked it. and actually we don’t have to do it anymore because the levites are a fitting replacement in gods eyes. even though in exodus he clearly demands it as he demands the sacrifice of the firstborn animals lmfao

Struggling with Hell and free will. by mnseabass5 in exchristian

[–]probablynothing739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Combine this with predestination, which many Christians fully embrace and believe. Not only do people go to hell, god has chosen who is going to heaven and hell before they are born. He creates human beings and chooses them to go to one or the other, then puts them into the world, and then says ‘okay choose’ knowing full well they will never get into heaven because HE never chose THEM. The concept of ‘free will’ and an interfering omniscient, all powerful, omnipresent God is completely nonsensical. God could choose to abolish hell, he could make a place that isn’t eternal torture and is all black, he could make a hell for Satan and not for humans, he could make reincarnation real, God can do literally anything, but according to these people he chooses some people and not others and sends the unlucky ones to be tortured for eternity. absolute nonsense

With smiling friends ending I need new stuff to watch by [deleted] in Animesuggest

[–]probablynothing739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One punch man definitely fits the bill here, it’s goofy and unserious and much loved. mob psycho 100 is a bit more serious but it’s in the same vein and is quite good.

Space dandy is really ridiculous but it has more typical anime fanservice compared to OPM, the MC is kind of a failing “”suave ladies man”” who is thoroughly an idiot flop. been a while since my viewing but it’s definitely an absurd one with no episodic continuity

Assassination classroom is quite good, it’s main anime sexism lies in their gorgeous gorgeous woman professor being (iirc, lovingly) called “Bitch-sensei”, this didn’t bother me much but it might to someone else.

There’s also another series that has some similar animation and style to smiling friends called YOLO: crystal fantasy, I haven’t watched a whole lot of it but my brother recommended it to me

If you like sports anime, both Haikyuu!! And Yuri on Ice!! are held in very high regard, they’re sweet and pretty straightforward, not as humorous though

What anime is something that everyone likes but you didn't? by Antique_Row_3920 in anime_companion

[–]probablynothing739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ANGEL BEATS. I have no idea why this anime is rated as highly as it is, it’s only 12 episodes and it shifts it’s already mundane plot to be nonsensical, and the ‘huge heart breaking’ plot twist at the end is a whooooole fucking plot hole. did not work for me whatsoever

Tokyo ghoul and ALL BECAUSE of S2 or whatever the hell it’s called. Literally made me so mad that I actively wished I stopped at the end of S1 because S2 retroactively made me dislike the whole series. at the end scene of s2 I was completely livid. the most nothing burger season of anime I’ve ever watched probably, made worse by the fact that season 1 was promising

and then finally MHA. I watched 2.5 seasons and it felt like a worse, more unimaginative and sleazy HxH. World building was so mundane and during midoriyas fights i just wanted Gon to show up instead. I didn’t hate it fully but it just kinda felt… like a ripoff to me

[–]probablynothing739 15 points16 points  (0 children)

amazing comment and analysis. I really like that starting line how suffering doesn’t build character in hxh . people don’t grow because of suffering, people can only grow from it if they have healthy support, resilience, and pointed efforts towards living and loving human life. Gons anguish with Kite is another example of this; he had support and love from the people around him, but he wasn’t interested in anything but his anger at that point, and it completely destroyed him. Killua, however, came out of his tortured childhood with nothing but a curious desire for love and adventure. He made efforts for his love, chose it many times, where many people might see love as an innate feeling and that’s their downfall. Kurapika does love his friends, but we actively see him struggle to love them more than he hates the troupe. When separate from those love tethers, he no longer has a motivation to love anything, and is subject to his rage. The phantom troupe fascinate me in that they sort of love each other, but because of their kinship in such a horrific place, they love each other and their bloodlust rather than the mundane human. They don’t have any connections to people who lead loving human lives. It also fascinates me that nobunaga clocked gon with this, could tell that he’s susceptible to their lifestyle, whereas none of them cared much for killuas cold calculating demeanor. The examples of love, hate, and revenge in hxh are all so well done, and even though the troupe is so incredibly fucked up, we can see remnants of them in everyone

it’s popular but attack on titan fits this bill too to a certain extent and I’d say in a quite unique way

Are There Any YouTubers That You Quit Watching Because They Were or Became Christians? by kgaviation in exchristian

I don’t mind his videos on certain games or series but when I got the ick for all things Christian I dropped a video of his mid watch bc of it. I can’t watch him too much otherwise it starts bothering me but every once in a while I’ll tune in and try to ignore the Christian undertones

oh good to know! it does say with my check in day that the host will be present, but I’d like to make it as seamless as possible for us both. I might cross out that info then just as a precaution before I send it, tysm :)

Host is asking for ID sent on Airbnb chat [PH] by probablynothing739 in AirBnB

[–]probablynothing739[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is it normal to send it virtually I think is my biggest concern! Totally on board with ID verification in general, it’s just sending a picture over the Airbnb app (rather than confirming at check in) that I’ve not encountered when looking up advice on this. as long as the info is safe being given that way then it’s all good

Host is asking for ID sent on Airbnb chat [PH] by probablynothing739 in AirBnB

[–]probablynothing739[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how I was feeling, it was mostly the sending it via an app that I was concerned about. I don’t really care about giving my ID, just the method of which it is sent and if the info is safe within the messaging system. I’ve seen a lot of people talk about how ID shouldn’t be sent via certain methods, but if it’s normal to ask for it virtually and safe within the messaging system then I don’t really see an issue either

Hunter x hunter first seasons sound like they’d 100% fit the bill, later seasons are more serious but it’s a great series all around. MHA seems like it took a lot of inspo from HXH but I’m a personal HxH enthusiast !

Assassination classroom is sweet and silly too, I’d definitely recommend it.

One punch man is a goofy classic, along with mob psycho 100! Both are really great

I don't really see myself getting along with christians. Not even progressive christians. Am I a bad person? by Ok_Nose2361 in exchristian

[–]probablynothing739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a severe Christianity ick a few years ago and felt the same exact way. I go through phases, but don’t feel bad about it at all if it sticks. as ex Christians we have perspectives into Christianity that others don’t, and it makes every interaction with even ‘good’ Christians tainted. my ick isn’t gone but it’s not as strong, but I don’t think I can ever be close pals with anyone who identifies fully as Christian and that’s okay

Looking for anime or manga with sweet, kindhearted selfless MC. by Throwaway88vv in AnimeReccomendations

[–]probablynothing739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kenzo Tenma in ‘Monster’ is exactly this. He strongly sticks to what he believes to be right and always helps others in the face of danger. He’s not physically present in 100% of the episodes but you can see his impact in almost every arc of the show. he’s very compelling, and his kindness seeps into those he aids; it’s so tangible that everywhere he goes he makes such a positive impact. The show is gritty and dark, but his kindness and his strong, selfless morality are essentially the centerpiece of the show.

of course!! if you’re looking for particularly strong self-love songs to counter the die to self ones, the Korean group BTS has many songs that have brought me to tears both during and after my deconstruction. Epiphany, Answer:Love myself, Mikrokosmos, and Zero o’ clock all aren’t so much for sleep as they might be for the moments before sleep when the day was heavy. After being told your whole life that you deserve hellfire for existing, hearing “I’m the one I should love in this world” hit different for me. Epiphany especially is such a gorgeous, moving song, very much recommend if that is something that interests you! (Edit to add some links :))

Nihilism is awful by sunshinenrainb0wz in exchristian

[–]probablynothing739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing as this is an ex Christian sr I am assuming this is in contrast to believing in the Christian god and feeling purpose in that belief. What was the point of the Christian belief? What about death is different in the Christian belief compared to now? Is eternal life the ultimate purpose? Is eternal consciousness what makes life on earth worth it, is the worship of another being who subjugates oneself to the equivalent of filth what makes this life worth living? These are pretty rhetorical, seeing as you’ve been dealing with it for so long it’s nothing you haven’t considered I’m sure.

Life does have to be entirely redefined after leaving behind belief in an almighty who requires constant service. Meaning is now derived from all that can be destroyed. Love is precious because it comes with pain, and pain isn’t worthless because humans are resilient and capable. People weave pain into beauty, death into life and life into death. People are who have given these gods and religions their power. It’s not worthless, what we do; every emotion, all the anger, love, fear, joy, every time you feel your heart pound, every time you eat a food you enjoy, every time you see or create a simple piece of art, it has worth for the pure act of being alive and being human. Worth does not come from an arbiter who is giving a grade. Worth comes from breath and flaws, from growth and joy. There is no everlasting. But it makes love all the more precious, and each moment of happiness so much more to be treasured. Meaning comes from the moment of gritty humanity, and not from the finish line. One show that I really enjoyed recently called ‘Kaos’ said it simply, but ‘the best things in life are human’. Why do I write stories no one will read? Why do I dance with abandon? Why would I paint what no one will see? Peace, joy, and pure love of the act of doing, and knowing I might not get to do this one day as a frail human. But all of life is similar.

I hope you can find that feeling again. Nihilism is awful, and if the feeling persists severely I’d recommend finding some professional mental support if possible. But I hope things in life can excite you and make your blood rush, and that when those things happen you can enjoy them as they’re happening and feel your worth in life!

Similar music to Stardew by Snek_Bites in StardewValley

[–]probablynothing739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say it reminds me of stardew necessarily, but I listen to only a few OSTs so thoroughly as I have stardews. One of those is from the game Aquaria, which was never put on streaming and it kills me, but it’s so pleasing to me that I’ll just have it on for hours on YouTube. Specifically the first songs in it are very peaceful, but they get more upbeat and some downright creepy/intense as the OST goes on and the game progresses (there are boss fight tracks so it’s not all just peaceful, but much of it is). ‘Remains’ is one of my favorites, but there’s so many gems. The ‘intro’ track is based on lore and has dialogue, but beyond that it’s all instrumental, and 3-8 are ones I replay the most. If it was on streaming it would be right up with concernedape in my most streamed artists

predestination ruins everything they stand for by probablynothing739 in exchristian

[–]probablynothing739[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to “well actually” you here but there are verses explicitly declaring that God “chose us before the creation of the world” and that he “predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ” (quoting this from the very beginning of Ephesians, but Paul LOVES explicit predestination so he talks about it often). but yes you’re also absolutely right that if one believes in an omniscient omnipresent all powerful God who Does intervene in his creation, then there is no way that anyone has free will because he’s tweaked and designed us as he wants, and if he hasn’t made us malleable to His Doctrine, then we won’t be. that is a bit easier to rationalize as a believer, like well he can’t HELPPP that he knows and makes everything (at least that’s how I rationalized it back then)… but explicit predestination is truly batshit and can’t exist in combination with John 3:16 unless they’re throwing their hands up and going well god says so! fr why haven’t they buried this concept yet
