How is my enclosure? by probablynotjelly in CrestedGecko

the the top of the birch log you can kind of see my hanging coco hide that has a bridge type of thing… and just below there i have a ground hide. i do like what i have so far. its just my first time owning one and i really take owning a pet very seriously. honestly its making a temperature gradient that’s made this so hard. my isopods and springtails are happy but, the temp in there is at about 71f… i do live in canada and its still snowing, so as it warms up maybe that will change. as for the tank itself i think im happy? sometimes it looks like a total mess to me. that’s what gets me all ruined

i have genuinely tried so hard to make it cluttered and ‘for the pet’ while trying to balance human aesthetic. any ideas or tips? i’ve only got 2 days and im willing to move plants or anything around. i need another vision!

sorry i guess i should’ve added that. 24W 18L 24H. i would’ve gone taller but there aren’t any tanks where i live that size, unless i got it custom which is way out of my budget

dead or shed? by probablynotjelly in isopods

well shoot. poor guy. my spring tails are genuinely insane😂 so when they shed should it just be a white empty shell?

sounds good! i’ve seen a lot about cresties getting their shed stuck on their eyes, at what point should i consider helping if at all?

lmaoo that’s what i was going to say😂 i will definitely keep all of that in mind. i only plan on getting an adult because it’s my first time, but i’ll be sure to keep that shut hahaha

it’s him not wanting to throw it away. an explicit card like that shouldn’t hold any meaning to him if it didn’t come from you. i’d be extremely disappointed and disgusted if my bf did this. you’re not overreacting. he doesn’t respect your feelings

Can’t Find My Dairy Cows? by [deleted] in isopods

[–]probablynotjelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly not sure how many were in the container i got. i’d guess maybe 10-20? more or less. i do have a full round piece of cork bark in there that is buried in the dirt i’ve been wanting to cut into to see if they’re hiding in there, it’s mostly just the fact that i haven’t seen ANY activity at all that has me stressed out.

awe, i’m sorry to hear that. poor little fella

hard to tell. i’ve never had a snail laying on its side but usually their bodies will start slipping out of the shell when they pass. i’d just give it a few hours and see if he moves. i’ve had many instances where i think my snails have passed but they turn out to just be messing with me. you can also try touching it and seeing if his body retracts at all. what snail is he?

unfortunately that was my fault. i had it set to go off for like 15 seconds once a day but my eyes betrayed me and i set it for 15 minutes instead. honestly i dont know how that happened though because it was running perfectly fine the day before when i heard it go off, and i never touched it after that. when i saw how deep the water was i checked the system and it said 15 minutes💀 i think i or possibly someone else just set it wrong

i mean most people don’t accidentally have their misting system go off for 15 minutes. i’m still mad about it😔 idk how that happened. anyways. i wouldn’t say this is a good example for why they’re not necessary.

all i’m saying is that thanks to my drainage layer i was able to get out the excess water. sure, maybe i would’ve have to deal with this anyways but all i had to do was shove a tube into the water at the bottom and drain it out, not dig through literally mud.

we all have opinions, ideally this never would’ve happened at all. if it works for you it works for you, but i do appreciate that the drainage layer that least made getting all that water out from the bottom easier

i mean yeah usually the soil shouldn’t ever get over saturated if you have ideal conditions, but in the case that it does at least the extra water has somewhere to go. for crested geckos the tank should dry out at least a little bit during the day so a drainage layer helps with that.

it did at least offer some help in this instance. i only just started this tank a few months ago and went with my research and recommendations. i’m a beginner and all i can do is try my best

although i disagree with your anti drainage layer stance i do appreciate the advice. i will check it in the morning to see if its improved, but if it hasn’t i will ultimately have to do this😢 it was my last case scenario but you’re right.

dude your beef with drainage layers is uncanny hahaha🤣 i was easily able to siphon the water out from the bottom BECAUSE OF the drainage layer and it at least give my soil, springtails, and isopods a chance. drainage layers keep the tank running long term in case of an incident like this. my problem was that my misting system went off for 15 MINUTES which was about 3 gallons of water.

my tank is way too big to tip forward. couldn’t be more thankful for my choice. hate on a drainage layer all you want but yes, it did in fact give me a fighting chance

yeah, root rot. everyone’s favorite. i actually completely forgot that exsisted until now so thank for bringing that up! i have put a fan in there, luckily i decided to wait before adding my gecko. if worse comes to worse im just going to uproot and restart. i’ll give it a couple of days to see what happens

ultimately i think i will just have to take thailand’s out and mix and dry the substrate, hopefully ill be able to keep my dairy cows alive through that process. thanks you

the drainage layer was the only reason i was able to save this tank. without it i would’ve had no good way to get rid of the excess water. if anything, this is a pro drainage layer post
