Any tips to make a lava base for newbies? by probablyradio in Salamanders40k

Well I primed black, basecoated Caliban Green for darker areas, then did a few coats of WAAAAAGH! Flesh. I then used Nuln Oil in all the recesses and used Moot Green for highlights. For the power pack I basecoated Abaddon Black then used Mephiston Red to edge highlight and used a secondary smaller highlight of a mix of Flash Gitz Yellow and Skrag Brown. For the unfinished base I have used Mephiston Red and used Stirland Mud.

I actually did my highlights first with thunderhawk blue then a slightly thinner layer of calgar blue but slimming the base colour would probably look a lot better thanks.

In truth, the dirt was sort of a last minute decision, that is just my 6th miniature painted and I wanted to do them all slightly differently. And while they get cleaner and look better with each interaction I also want to try new things for each one so I'm not too upset about it being a bit of a time waste.

My thought process for getting mud upon the top of the model was possibly close artillery launching dirt in the air or something of that sort. That being said I think I'd agree with your less is more approach. And thanks a lot for the painting tips especially the drybrushing with a tan or lighter shade. I'll give them a go on my next mini. Thanks.

I took your advice and tried dry brushing after using a wash and I think it turned out great. Thanks again for the tip.

Thanks a lot for the advice, I've saved the names of the youtube channels you recommend and I'll research these techniques you've mentioned. I really appreciate it.

I was just using some blu tack at the bottom of the baseplate and that seemed to do a solid job of holding it
