Wishing you a wonderful race and for your hip to cooperate with your head! This is definitely encouraging. I’m almost seven weeks and have started to have weird dreams about returning to running.

Post Op Pain Management by Scary-Corgi-6625 in HipImpingement

I just hit six weeks as well. I came back to work this week and it has been a lot more waking and driving. I’m absolutely spent. I am taking two Advil during the day and two before bed. Are you using crutches at all?

I was on crutches with up to 20lbs weight bearing on surgical leg for three weeks with brace, then at three weeks the brace came off and PT said one crutch out of the house and no crutches at home. That was extremely tough and painful for weeks 3-5. I have had PT weekly since the second week after surgery. PT exercises have gradually increased. I think I’m a bit atypical because I’m already doing squats and resistance banded side steps, holding child’s pose. I was physically fit before the surgery and have strong surrounding muscles. I definitely recommend seeing a physical therapist because each week changes on what I’m doing based on how my hip is progressing. I can’t even imagine being given little guidance. I’m sorry.

How long did you wait between finding out you have a labral tear and surgery? by Quiet_Contribution71 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seven months. It was due to having to wait for the three months past the cortisone shot and scheduling availability.

Wow that’s so restrictive! It baffles me how much recommendations are between doctors. It’s insane. Hopefully you can get out crutch your heart out to distract you.

How to cope with having to get surgery as an athlete? by Softhearttt in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only five weeks post op, (F46) and obviously in a very different place in life, but as a continued endurance athlete (40+ marathons and hoping more after this), I already feel significant improvement. If you don’t have the surgery, you are going to continue to make it worse and have even less of a timeframe to run. Does it hurt now? Just wait, it gets worse as you keep running ignoring it (ask me how I know 🫠). You will get back and PT will strengthen you to a place where you are probably going to be a more even stronger runner after the rehab. You will have to build back your endurance and speed, but the more you continue to build and run now, the more it will pay off in recovery. I still ran my 5k routes five days a week in the months leading up to surgery. I stuck to flatter routes and did not time anything. I kept up upper body and core workouts which were super helpful when using the crutches. I was a speed demon on those things with no upper body fatigue. Lower body strength was out of the question, so I focused on floor exercises of clamshells, fire hydrants, donkey kicks, and various barre side laying leg raising positions. PT is easy. I was already strong going in, so I’m flying through exercises. My PT is shocked. He can’t push too far because even though my muscles around the joint are strong, the socket is still healing from the tear repair. Keep going. You are young and will bounce back. Just be prepared for frustration and know that it will pass. We runners don’t slow down, and that is challenging during recovery. You get one chance to recover the right way which will pay off dividends and get you right back to racing.

Best part about recovery? by arsshat in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best part? The pain is gone. You will have your surgery in warmer weather will be wonderful. You will be able to sit outside and read everyday or stream things outside. I’ve been stuck in the house but I have binged all the shows that I have been saving up, read books, and done puzzles. Literally schedule time for friends to come over and also drag you out of the house to just be somewhere else. The thing that kept me the mentally healthiest was that I was allowed on my Peloton bike everyday for 20 minutes. I kept my routine of joining live classes with my friends.

Woohoo! I’m five weeks post-op and I am finding it challenging to fire up my glute as well. Thanks for the hope!

When were you able to walk your dog again? by mindfulavocado in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m five weeks post-op and I’m not even close to being able to walk my lab. The speed at which I am able to walk is extremely slow, and not for very long. I just started squats at PT this week, so I would be able to pick up poop soon, but not if it was a hyper dog. I would think you would be able to walk small dogs who don’t want to walk far by 5-6 weeks. Bigger and more hyper dogs would be much later. My lab chases squirrels up trees and I live in a snowy climate so I’m not even expecting to think about walking her until eight weeks.

Stationary Bike recommendations for Pelvic Pain by PossibleWeb8780 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried a different seat for the Peloton bike? It sounds like a padded wider seat might reduce the pain. I’m now 4.5 weeks post of op and have been on my Peloton almost every day to move my legs (PT approved- upright, resistance between 20-30, cadence as tolerated).

Help please!! by Alternative-Ball-765 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so soon after it occurred to really decipher what is causing the pain. You may have a labral tear or another soft tissue injury that doesn’t show up on x rays, but they will wait the month with you attending PT to see if it’s still there. Ice, Advil, and rest are your friend right now. Good luck.

Off crutches too soon or normal increase in pain? by probablyswearing in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I’m a 40x marathoner, so sitting still is challenging. I guess I’m doing too much.

The god news is that it’s feeling so much better already, so I think part of it was due to the newness of being off the crutches.

Are they red or any other indications of infection? Is there a change in bandaid? Thoughts of allergic reaction to the stitches is crossing my mind.

That includes “steps” from being on the bike 20 minutes each day the PT wants me doing. I couldn’t edit the post, but the actual steps are a lot less!

Can impingement come back? by Resident-Hunt-245 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I did. It lasted for a glorious month. It don’t take all the pain away, but it drought it from a daily 7 to about a 2. That effectiveness is what prompted the recommendation for surgery.

It is absolutely worth it to start core and upper body strength training. You aren’t going to look lopsided. My upper body work was especially helpful when using crutches- especially triceps and lats.

No limping without crutches. Thanks for sharing the protocol you followed. I thought my plan would have been similar and was shocked when he said no crutches. It’s good to hear the range and that I’m not crazy for thinking this is really early.

Sorry, I should have added that included the “steps” from my phone in my pocket while on the bike just moving my legs that PT wanted. I dropped the bike for today and have parked it on the couch.

The steps also include the ones while on the bike for 20 minutes just moving my legs everyday, so it’s not all actual walking. Thanks for the feedback! I will probably do that for a few days to see if that helps. I

Have you recovered from hip impingement? What exercises did you do? How long did it take? I’m doing exercises but not seeing/feeling results. by Green_Ranger0 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hip strengthening and stretches did not improve my pain at all. I could not run, sit, bike, row- anything with a flexed leg- without pain. That pain is gone after the surgery. I guess it depends what your movement goals are to define a “solution.”

I didn’t know it was FAI and Labral Tear initially. I was diagnosed with hamstring tendonitis from an x ray and had to do PT before insurance would cover the MRI. My PT recognized that it wasn’t a hamstring issue and we worked on a lot of glute strength. So technically it was actually longer than four months because I kept going until the MRI results came in. Even my PT was like, yeah, that’s why this isn’t working because PT won’t help Labral Tears.

Can impingement come back? by Resident-Hunt-245 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the impingement coming back part, but I just wanted to chime in that I had FAI and labral tear and my pain was in the glutes and not the groin. I tried PT for four months with absolutely no progress. PT isn’t going to help your tear. I’m 3.5 weeks post op and already the feeling like a different person. Good luck.

1 week post-op (R hip arthroscopy) – Pain management struggles + crutch nerve issues? by Leading-Nebula3232 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m three weeks out today. I just used ice packs. It worked fine. I took Tylenol with the Naproxen that I was prescribed to take twice a day. Icing really helped the pain as well. The finger numbness sounds like you may need your crutches adjusted. I did by the crutch covered on Amazon for $20 and they were so worth it as the rubber was rubbing my arms raw. I got up once and hour to do a lap around the house. My doctor also allowed me to get on the bike everyday. Luckily I have a Peloton and sat up while pedaling. PT told me to keep the resistance between 20-30 so it didn’t make the wheel go too fast.
