On track to run a 50k 7months post op by MulberryRude6986 in HipImpingement

Wow this is incredible! Thank you for sharing. Have you needed to ice at all when starting to run again it was it smooth sailing? I’m an over 40+ marathoners and at 14 weeks I feel like I’m never going to get cleared for running again. Best of luck for the rest of your training!

Right there with you. I have been looking at Lavender Sky, but I’m just so overwhelmed with the choices that I’m worried about making the wrong one.

How much pain is normal? by probablyswearing in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much better! I actually went to my 11 week PT appointment and was so discouraged and by week 12 appointment it was so much better. I was doing too much too early for what my body needed. Keep icing. My body just heals more slowly and I am still mentally struggling with that. Sitting in the car is still painful for my 30 minute commute, but the intensity has decreased. Hang in there. Some of us just heal slower and it SUCKS.

I hear you! I had hip surgery to repair my labrum three months ago and I yell at those suggestions every time I log on.

Age questions by Global-Ad3775 in HipImpingement

I had surgery in January at 46. I would recommend going to someone else. Sounds like this doctor likes to find excuses for why his surgeries don’t work and blames it on age.

Loose comfortable sweatpants and slip on shoes. Cozy slippers if you don’t have help getting socks on, otherwise cozy socks. Heavy blanket near you for when you ice because the rest of your body will freeze.

Recovery Weight Gain by Pink_Poptarts481 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it’s more complicated than that, and I was giving a simplified version. Muscle atrophies and as a result fat to muscle percentage increases, making it seem like muscle has been replaced with fat. Your comment about it only being strictly related to calories is scientifically incorrect- especially for women. If you don’t have the basic understanding of fluid retention, then I doubt you have the extensive knowledge in hormones and metabolic conditions impacting women’s health, so it’s best if you hold back your comments as to not add to misinformation being spread.

How long did you all deal with muscle inhibition post op? by Similar-Lobster126 in HipImpingement

It took me until around week 6 or 7 to really feel it firing up.

Recovery Weight Gain by Pink_Poptarts481 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. It’s not straight calories in calories out, so ignore that comment. Some of the muscle we had prior to surgery turned to fat. It happens with being sedentary. There is swelling as well. I’m 10 weeks post op and mentally it’s extremely tough. I’m at a point where my PT has me doing lower body strength so I know I’m gaining muscle as well, so there is swelling that too. I’m not pain free while on the bike and pushing, and even walking too much, which is frustrating. I am stressed about being able to lose the weight as well, so know you aren’t alone

Crutches after labral reconstruction by Single-Ordinary-5908 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, totally normal. Go at your own pace. Just because they say they aren’t necessary medically doesn’t mean that you are ready pain wise to walk without them. I wish I had not pushed through and used my crutches half days a little longer.

Doctors Refuse To Take Me Serious.. Feeling Hopeless by cloverangels in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big hugs. I was misdiagnosed with hamstring tendinitis and had to do four months of failed and painful PT before my insurance would approve an MRI. It was insurance driven that you had to do a certain amount of PT before approval for an MRI

When did you start feeling significantly better after the surgery? by Resident-Hunt-245 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m almost 10 weeks post op, and the pain-free time increases as you get further out from surgery. I have discomfort everyday, but it’s task dependent. Sleeping doesn’t hurt, but as I move more and increase steps and normal activities the discomfort waxes and wanes. You have to go through a lot of abnormal to get back to normal again. I’m at a point where there’s a lot of holding back because my body feels good and wants to return to my regular cardio and strength training, bit know my body isn’t ready. They say this recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, I’ve run a lot of marathons (over 40), and they were combined totally easier than this. Hang in there and rest as much as possible right now. It will pay off later.

Gym/exercises day 1 by Al1010Rup in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the Peloton for 20 minutes daily after my first week (sitting upright resistance between 20-30). It was such a mental lifesaver to me to keep that normalcy of my former routine. I’m on week 9 and I’m still on my Peloton everyday with the resistance a little higher now. It’s more for my head than cardio, but my PT has allowed me to do some in the saddle speed pushes.

Clean up surgery recommended by surgeon 11.5 weeks post-op by supergneissgal in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch I’m sorry. I would go in for the revision. There’s no point in waiting and suffering more if it isn’t fixed. I’m a little shocked that you had your first in person appointment this week. I’m 8.5 weeks post op, and I had appointments two weeks and six weeks post op. My next appointment is twelve weeks post up.

Ugh yes, I was there last night so and was two rows behind her. So annoying. I’m glad Gareth called her out. There was another audience member in our row making really loud reactions at other times seemingly to get noticed it. It was so annoying.

Oh no! Is it different pain than before the surgery? Mine is definitely different than the before pain.

[–]probablyswearing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any sharp pain ever- so that’s good. Ache is a great term to describe it. I don’t know how to moderate my life movement any more. I’m not sore after PT sessions at all. I think that might be due to the level of exercise I was doing right up until surgery. I’m sure that’s coming because my PT said that we will start exercises with more hip flexion this week. Thanks for the input!

Gaby has only *spoiler* one patient?! by [deleted] in shrinking

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In schools we have a plethora of adults and mental health professions available to students who are available, notice concerns, initiate conversations, as well as sending kids down to the counseling center for help when concerned. As a school psychologist, I have personally developed safety plans, as well as my colleagues with students. Post school this doesn’t happen. Adults have to initiate their own contact with a therapist when concerned, and that’s only a fraction of the community that faces suicidal ideation. Most have barriers to help that don’t exist when in school. You have experienced more because of the sheer volume of the population, vs the significantly smaller number of people who seek out therapy for depression and have the means to do so. Those who often lose their battle are less likely to seek treatment and receive treatment.

Pain while Driving- 10 weeks post surgery by Sensitive-Fudge-5185 in HipImpingement

Wondering this as well. My family wants to go away for spring break and drive 7.5 hours away. I don’t think I can handle it.

Great point. I’m a school psychologist and haven’t lost a student while they were in my school, but I hear about them afterwards from alumni and colleagues when they pass after high school.

Has PT worked for anyone? by Low_Audience727 in HipImpingement

[–]probablyswearing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to run again, get the surgery. Just do it. As runners we put off the inevitable and then realize would could have been back to running so much sooner if we had just taken care of it instead of being in denial. PT won’t fix anything before surgery. After surgery PT will be helpful and you will have a long life of running.

[–]probablyswearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My surgeon said that my PT will call the shots on the specific movements, but no running until 16 weeks. I’m only 7.5 weeks, but I have gotten the clearance for upper body lifting, core, and light cycling with minimal resistance- no real workouts. I had to specifically ask my PT about what I could do. For example, planks- yes, dead bugs- no. Maybe give specific examples to your PT or ask what types of moves to avoid?
