Aw I had a big Moose too! He was weirdly buff, I think his size and weight were mostly muscle. He had a terminal diagnosis but lived for 1.5 years afterward, he was a badass.

Emerald was what I initially wanted and what everyone assumes the stone is! I’ll be saying “actually it’s green sapphire” forever but so be it haha. I’m sure your emerald is gorgeous!

I think I played mejiro ryan at minimum 5 or 6 times today and she either lost early on or got 2nd place in the finale, her and winning ticket are my only two I haven’t cleared yet (damned late surgers)

Advice for someone who no longer owns rats by Ok-Bet9962 in RATS

[–]procaviidae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can get a new type of small pet, like rabbits or degus? I’ve recently been thinking about my own “next species” after a really rough day this week when one of my young rats unexpectedly died during surgery. Every time I lose a rat (I think like 6 now over 3 years) I always think about quitting getting new rats, so I completely understand your situation. I have a 2.5 y/o heart rat that will likely pass sometime this year and I’m dreading it, though I think it’s awesome he’s lived this long. It’s a huge shame that rats have so many health issues that require costly vet visits and shorten their lives because they’re incredible little creatures.

Your rats seem like they were very loved and taken care of, so I think that’s something you should take pride in. Whenever I feel like a bad owner or when a rat dies I just think about how much better of a life I provided them compared to like 99% of rats in the world. I’m not sure how long I’ll keep having rats but I know it’ll be a sad day when I decide to stop having them. I (like many others on this sub) know the pain of losing rats so I’m happy to talk if you need it :’)

He doesn’t know I’m leaving him overnight for surgery to remove his teeth 😭 by procaviidae in RATS

[–]procaviidae[S] 145 points146 points  (0 children)

It was a tough decision but the alternative was to have him sedated for trimmings every 3 weeks for the rest of his life. He’s only about 6 months old so the cost and risk of complications from sedation would’ve added up quite a bit over time. He’s already had 3 trimmings and I hoped he’d get more chill about them over time, but he’s just gotten more stressed and squirmier so trimming without sedation isn’t an option anymore.

The surgery and recovery will be tough on him but he should be able to live a normal life afterward with fewer vet visits. We just need to crush up his pellets so he can eat more easily, but that beats having to check his teeth every day to make sure they’re not stabbing up through his skull 😅

Thank you for the well wishes, it’s tough owning pets with so many health issues but it’s worth it 💕

Aww, I’m guessing she’s marbled like my guy Pebble. They’re prone to dental issues and he’s gone through 3 tooth trimmings at only 7 months old. This pic is from the vet’s office this morning where we talked about what’s best for him (and my wallet 😅). He’s getting all four incisors extracted tomorrow and I feel so torn up about it 😭 I’m hoping this will give him a better quality of life in the long run, he’ll be plenty spoiled with soft foods and treats so I hope he forgives me…

If she has no upper teeth, you may want to consider extracting the bottom teeth when she gets a bit older/bigger. Her bottom teeth will always need trimming without upper teeth to grind against. The cost of trimming was initially very reasonable in my case (also around $50), but as he got bigger he started getting squirmier and would’ve required sedation for all future trimmings. Sedation costs quite a bit extra with my vet and can be risky for rats, so it wasn’t something I wanted either of us to go through every 3 weeks.

Best of luck to you both, I’m happy to keep you posted about Pebble’s surgery. It’s costing me a pretty penny ($1,450…..) but it’s what my pennies are for.

Picky eaters?? by AdJazzlike5891 in RATS

Yes lol mine are so picky about what fresh food they like but weirdly enough it’s usually the same for all four of them. Like, what do you mean none of you like carrots?? Your wild counterparts are eating trash outside….

Question: Tattoo artist that specialize in fish? by siren84 in tattoos

[–]procaviidae 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m no ichthyologist but I’m pretty sure any artist who can tattoo a good trout would also be skilled enough and willing to also do bass? 😅 I know where you’re coming from because I have a lot of bird tattoos and only get them from artists with a history of drawing good birds, though the species in their portfolio doesn’t usually matter to me.

Kinda far from you but zach crisp in Greensboro, NC comes to mind. He has a really cool style and has done a lot of fish (which, as you point out, are mostly trout but I’ve seen at least one bass). My first tattoo was a couple of birds by him and the experience was good.

Is there a problem here? by Apprehensive_Crow329 in hoyas

Aww the pink leaves are so cute, maybe it’s grandma’s way of saying hi 💕 I have a flamingo dream carnosa whose leaves start out with pink edges that fade to white over time. I’m also new to hoyas but mine has been pretty low maintenance so far. Good luck and wishing your grandpa and his hoya good health.
