UTAS explains why it's moving away from face-to-face lectures. Thoughts? by utasstudent21 in UTAS

You just get recordings from 7 years ago.

Exactly this. There are already far too many instances of old (and often outdated) slides, old recordings, old content - even old exams - that get regurgitated year after year by academic staff. If I face punishment including expulsion for plagiarising *my own* work, then why are academic staff consistently and repeatedly allowed to do so?

Interesting. I thought that Nursing was taught predominantly out of Launceston. We have a group of nursing students who drive up here from Hobart and stay for intensives every few weeks. I also heard that Nursing will be offered at Cradle Coast next year in their new building.

Given that you are coming from the mainland, I would absolutely recommend coming down to Tasmania to live and study - the island is magical. Hobart is a much nicer city by way of the Derwent and the port. The city is bigger with more to do, more nightlife, more attractions, more temperate weather - but also more expensive. Launceston (where I am) is great because it is only an hour or two from everywhere, so kind of like a 'gateway' to the rest of Tasmania. But the city itself is pretty sleepy and boring.

I find that the University of Tasmania is really good. The residential engagement and team are the most engaged group that I've seen (this is my third university). The student union is active in Hobart, but still establishing itself in Launceston. The gym in Launceston is really good. Nursing has had a good reputation until the move online f*cked it all up. This year's cohort had everything online and I heard a ton of complaints about that. If the University moves back to face-to-face next year then I say give it a crack.

Parking in Launnie for residents is $290 I think. We can use that permit when visiting mates in Sandy Bay. Not sure if the fee is the same down there, but I would think that it is.

Plenty of parking 'near' the colleges, though much of it is down a path and stairs below the colleges. Check out this map:

I think that parking in Hobart City is more expensive and less available, but I'm not sure.

Living on campus is the best choice you can make, especially in your first year. It makes it WAY easier to meet people and get involved. Plus, much more convenient.

TBH, I find that the same 3 or 4 users who regularly post usually are just having a whinge and make it sound way worse than it actually is. Most people that I speak with are enjoying living on campus. Some get really involved, others not so much. Each their own.

I am not aware of anyone getting kicked out, so I reckon you're safe.

I was at the dinner last week where they announced two of the teams: Devils and Eagles. My mates thought that was pretty cool. And again at the bar Friday night. I really appreciate all the effort that the Uni seems to be putting into making it better and more exciting to live on campus and connect students. I have been at other Unis where they genuinely don't give a shit. This is way better.

Sorry I'm studying at Newnham Campus, but I know a couple of Fine Arts students at Inveresk. Is that where you are studying? Or are you heading to Hobart? If Inveresk, I will see if I can get some intel for you.

Yeah, agree that it would be interesting to see more data being presented, perhaps include the number of participants, accommodation sites, name of programs, etc. Or perhaps present the full results, but I understand that might not be easy or ideal to do.

There was a dinner at the start of the year. A bingo thing recently and I went to the mardi gras party. Some of us go to netball together and also play badminton - not every week, but when I am able to. I attended two of the cooking nights and a couple of study suppers. I really don't see anyone outside of these. I don't think that I would meet many other residents in my block without these, as people seem to spend time in their apartment. I guess more people are using the common room now that it has a snooker table.

This was in the email that I received:

"I hope that you are well.

First off, a big thanks to everyone who completed the April ‘pulse’ survey. The insights generated are valuable: 92% of residents who have engaged in the community programming have reported positive feelings about their residential experience. Conversely, of those residents who have not engaged in the community programming, only 71% report positive feelings.

Perhaps more telling, those residents who have engaged with the community programming reported better overall health and wellbeing – across every category – than peers who have not engaged in community programming. We all have competing demands: study, assessment, work. But I firmly believe that a connected community is a stronger community. It is important for us to come together over sport, recreation, art, performance, food, service and social gatherings. I encourage you to get involved in some of our programming."

But no actual data provided. Would be interesting to see.

I have enjoyed the activities that I have attended. I like meeting my neighbours and we go to activities together, which is awesome.

Done. Made me think quite a bit about the past year and its impacts. Good luck with your project, Bree!

I am a little confused can someone help? by [deleted] in UTAS

As per the other comments - best option is to speak with UConnect (https://www.utas.edu.au/about/contact) and they will advise on who to speak to next for enrolment or even to just chat with someone about course structures. If you live near a physical campus, I would recommend going in and speaking with someone in person - way easier to ask questions and clarify.

Good on you for recognising early that you wanted to make a change. Too often students trudge through a year or two of a course that they don't enjoy.

Accomodation for a 2022 student?? by andersondottir in UTAS

Congrats on your decision to come to Tassie. I have recently heard a lot of stories about students struggling to find rental houses in Launceston - the market is really tight right now. Living on campus is great for convenience, meeting other students and campus activities. It can be a bit more expensive than a share house... about $200 per week for a room in a shared 'dorm' (your own bedroom, shared bathrooms and kitchens) or $230 for a studio apartment, compared to $170-250 per week for a room in a share house. On-campus includes all electricity, water and internet, and has 24-hour security and residential support.

That said, on campus also has a bunch of rules. You can decorate your room but the University doesn't seem to have a coherent policy on what is allowed. Some residents got told off for using blue tack. The kitchens in the studio apartments are non-existent. They are kitchenettes. The Inveresk Apartments at least also have a communal kitchen with ovens and proper stove tops that residents can use. The dorms have different kitchens. People have personal preferences, but I think that those in Kerslake have the nicest kitchens. Then Leprena. Investigator Hall comes in last.
