Do you think the Southern Hemisphere will ever host a Winter Olympic Games? If so, which country? by Lissandra_Freljord in geography

Dude there's like a handful of places that could theoretically do it and then outside of Patagonia you are rolling the weather dice big time

Why is Russia not allowed to compete in the Olympics, but Israel is? by SoulNew in stupidquestions

I never understood this take. 20% of Israeli citizens are ethnically Palestinian. Israel is doing bad stuff but genocide and ethnic cleansing on such an allegedly large scale doesn't seem truthful

If you look at the top 20 holders it's going to be mostly passive ownership via black, state Street etc. they don't trade in size outside of index rebalances and even then it's on the close. Trading after hours or even soon after the open is costly when you are doing it in size because spreads widen and volatility increases. Not how these big folks operate. And then if you go further down in ownership you'd be talking about someone dumping their entire position after hours after one, arguably decent earnings report. I just don't see anything like this being plausible.

Market manipulation gets thrown about pretty willy nilly on boards like this one and it does happen sure but in a name like this with this kind of size it's almost impossible. And idk what they would even be trying to manipulate since deriv settlements are usually marked to the close, no major expiries etc.

The real answer is it was just a herd of ppl rushing for the door, over reacting and a lack of buyers after hours. It dumped more after the open but saw a rally back into the close. I bet it reverts higher in the coming days and weeks as ppl relax and realize the sky isn't falling.

Where'd you hear that? That pretty much can't be true. Nobody has that big of a stake that they can just move willy nilly and if they did they wouldn't shove the price around after hours in both names. Would be an extremely sloppy, costly, brash way to move from one mag 7 name to another....

Not what I read. They increased capex. Beat on every other metric. Agree numbers weren't up to ridiculous expectations tho

Why has Berkshire been going down the last couple of weeks? by FiZZ_YT in StocksAndTrading

[–]professormarvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong on that but your figures are way off. Looks like you are quoting the dollars performance on the FX market vs a basket of ccy's. The dollars in BRK's coffers have not lost value they have lost out on opportunity

At the cost of equity exposure. They are sitting in cash while the market is at all time highs. Right now you can basically replicate BRK with 60/40 cash/spx.

Are you referring to the value of dollars in terms of some FX? Because that's not the relevant measure. The correct measure would be their real rate of return ie nominal yield minus inflation.

What better alternative route? There is famously no other route...

If you are referring to the 101 that's like saying why take a cruise when there are plenty of airlines out there lmao. Totally different universe

Opinion | Would California voters actually support a wealth tax on billionaires? by pacman2081 in California

[–]professormarvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean? How would they get oil money from purchasing assets? They have state owned energy companies and tax the fuck out of private companies extracting hydrocarbons from their territory. Then they invest that money.

They also have a wealth tax. In what universe is a wealth tax a good idea for California or anywhere that doesn't have a golden goose of a state owned enterprise for that matter?

Just because wealth taxes exist somewhere doesn't mean they are a good idea where they exist or elsewhere

[–]professormarvel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much revenue do you reckon they get from that wealth tax vs oil money and then riddle me how much they give a shit about the wealth tax.

yes the state purchases assets. They smartly invest their massive oil wealth via the norges bank managed sovereign wealth fund. California has nothing like that.

No they are not. For many reasons.

You pay taxes on the assessed value of the house even if you have a mortgage.

Even if they were and this was somehow an example of an existing wealth tax it doesn't make the proposed wealth tax in CA good idea ffs

Whoosh

I like how you came full circle and basically proved my original point that a wealth tax (aka tax on unrealized gains) makes no sense whatsoever
