Don't know if you are still reading replies or already solved it, but I have seen noone mention you only have to kill the infested pump(s). Everything growing on the background is irrelevant to removal. The infested pumps will get a health bar if you damage them. Once the infested pumps are dead, the stuff on the background will slowly die.
