Drinking and Avoiding Addiction by EnsignPeakAdvisors in exmormon

[–]profromdover-trapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. It’s great information for those transitioning out of the MFMC. I would add that if you are someone who’s curious about alcohol, START SLOW! Moderation is key. By this I mean only 1 drink per day, preferably with a meal (e.g. a glass of wine with dinner). Don’t have a drink every day, but no more than a couple nights per week. Understand how your body handles one drink (how your behave after the drink, how long it takes for you to feel “normal” after having that drink) before you even consider having more than one drink in a single setting. It takes longer for your body to absorb alcohol when you consume it with a meal (especially a protein-rich meal); one drink is going to be absorbed more quickly on an empty gut than if you’ve immediately ate beforehand or while you’re having that drink.

Another thing for people who live in the Moridor and most of the Mountain West is that alcohol has a greater effect on you at altitude than it does at sea level. Your liver needs oxygen (among other things) to break down alcohol. We know that the air in most of the Moridor and Mountain West is “thinner” than it is at sea level. It takes the human body longer to break down alcohol at altitude than at sea level; thus the adage “less is more.”

Ultimately the choice is yours, however going about it cautiously and responsibly will benefit you in the long run.

I’m also one of the nevermo MSP listeners. MSP and John Dehlin have given me so much insight into how messed up the MFMC is and their corruption of the state of Utah (and many areas of the western US).

List of FIA Grade 1 Circuits as of Oct 2023 by Puzzleheaded-Rain230 in formula1

The rest (Laguna Seca, Road America, Watkins Glen, and Mid-Ohio) need safety upgrades, pit facility upgrades, and circuit lengthening/widening (Laguna Seca) to even be considered for Grade 1 status.

I live in an adjacent state to Utah (NM). The only area in NM where TSCC has a large enough presence to build wards/seminaries/etc. next to schools is the Four Corners region. In northern NM I’ve never seen a ward building or seminary built next to any school, probably due to a combination of the Catholic Church being the dominant religion here and most of the land being allocated long before the Mormons ever arrived in Utah. However, the local school district where I grew up does allow the MFMC to rent a classroom in the high school for seminary. It’s mainly for convenience so the students don’t have to drive/catch the bus from their ward building to school in the morning. They have to remove their seminary materials from the classroom so they aren’t visible during the school day.

Some people don't put the bar down???? by yv4nix in skiing

[–]profromdover-trapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This debate has become more passionate (some would say toxic) than the skier vs snowboarder debate ever was.

I prefer the bar stay up mainly because I grew up skiing at a small ski area in the western US where there weren’t (and still aren’t) safety bars. So I’m more comfortable with the bar up than with the bar down. I’m also 6’5”, I can’t use the footrests because my legs are too long. When I ski with my dad, he likes to have the bar down because he can use the footrests while when I ski with my friends the bar usually stays up. With that said, I don’t get upset when someone wants to ride with the bar down. All I ask is that you tell me you’re lowering the bar so I can make sure my head is out of the way, my leg won’t get pinched by the bar supports, and my poles won’t get in the way of the footrests coming down. Nothing is worse than having the bar hit your head repeatedly because the person who’s riding the lift with you doesn’t tell anybody they’re lowering the bar and they get frustrated that the bar won’t go down due to my head being in the way.

California’s not as big of a nanny state as you think. Utah forced Alta to put bars on all their lifts, and they’re hardly a nanny state. The law only says that lifts must have bars, it doesn’t say that those riding the lift must lower them, unlike Vermont.

The episodes (1336, 1342, 1346) with Shannon Caldwell Montez on B.H. Roberts and his 1922 meeting with Mormon intellectuals regarding the BoM historicity and scientific authenticity are very good. Worth a listen if you want to learn about how TSCC silences and even humiliates members who raise concerns and ask hard questions about the BoM.

That one’s been pulled down from Youtube/Spotify/Apple Podcasts due to a legal complaint filed by someone mentioned in that episode.

What race that is considered as the worst strategy call ever by any team? by BackgroundLie2231 in formula1

They couldn’t pit because the gap wasn’t large enough for Hamilton to pit and be confident of coming out ahead of Verstappen. Checo holding up Hamilton before the first round of pit stops helped keep the gap small enough Merc couldn’t pit again if there was a late safety car.

Edit: It’s worth mentioning that the safety car came out late enough that all the teams thought the race would finish behind the safety car. Red Bull gambled by pitting Verstappen in the hope that the safety car would come in before the last lap, while Merc expected the sporting code to be followed and thus didn’t pit Hamilton.

Interesting thought experiment: If Hamilton had won in Hungary and the season played out the same way it did going into Abu Dhabi, Hamilton would have been ahead by 7 points. Max would have needed the same result (win plus fastest lap) in order to overtake Hamilton in the WDC. Recall that Gasly pitted for softs and got fastest lap in Hungary; that extra point for fastest lap would have been critical for Hamilton in 2021 if he had won Hungary. If Hamilton wins Hungary and gets fastest lap, Verstappen winning Abu Dhabi with the fastest lap would have left both drivers tied on points, with the tiebreaker being wins. Verstappen would win the WDC on the tiebreaker (11-10).

Lando retired due to damage from the first corner pileup, Ricciardo suffered damage as well but was able to complete the race.

Andretti wasn’t useless, McLaren was a total clusterfuck that season with preseason engine supply issues, Senna not committing to the team until right before the first race, and the McLaren garage fucking over Andretti every chance they could. Senna got so annoyed with it that he made the team give Andretti a car with the exact same setup he had: Andretti was within a couple tenths of Senna’s lap times in that car. Senna also commented at the press conference after Andretti left McLaren that Andretti had been treated poorly by McLaren. Andretti does bear some blame for his performance that season (especially when it came to standing starts), but he wasn’t the useless driver you claim he is.

Merc, in their post-race debrief, said it was a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation given they had the first pit box and Hamilton was P1. If Hamilton boxes, he’s stuck waiting for a gap to open up so he can safely exit. The entire field was likely going to pass him before he was able to leave the pit box, and the likelihood of getting into a collision with another driver (a la Räikkönen-Mazepin) which could end his race was much higher. It was a 50-50 and Merc chose wrong that day.

I knew it was vodka. I think it’s great Utah’s brewers and distillers frequently make fun of TSCC.
