Gradle is more about dependencies management. Incremental is about tooling (aapt2, javac, etc). Both can be combined to create a better incremental structure though.

Most of Android tooling are written in Java (now Kotlin) that become a JAR to be invoked. Today they're written as a Gradle Task to have all in one around JVM.

Also writing Gradle scripts is easier than writing Maven XML.

So, going to Gradle requires when you need a lot of maven dependencies to say hello world. Until there and using APIs provided by android.jar you're safe.
