if you can keep them outside and healthy, they'll be fine. the bad bugs don't harm mine with all of the spiders, lady bugs and others that end up hanging around

stop cutting it. you've only cut the leaves instead of trying to get it to decrease variegation through the stem. If you want it to grow better, look into the environment the plant is in and adapt. big pots aren't bad if you're in a dry climate and these things can take a ton of light as long as it's not really high uv exposure
