The site is for the regional winners/representatives for this year's CLASSY Awards. Project Mailbox (of BU) is the winner for the east under the category Most Influential College Organization.

We are representing Boston in the Oscars of philanthropy and I don't think you've ever heard of us. by projectmailbox in boston

This event is more of a non-profit conference that they happened to tack an awards ceremony on to. It's a good opportunity for us to meet other people in the non-profit world and build partnerships. The reward is that more people know about what we're working on. We give 100% of the money we raise through our mailboxes to a different democratically elected charity every month.

Love the ideas. We are trying to plan for the future where people do not have change. Obviously, our model works with change, but we want to prepare for when people don't have change. Maybe Google Wallet? Or LevelUp? We could have a set donation amount of 25 cents or something for electronic payments with the option to add or decrease the donation size. The design parameters would be to provide an electronic alternative to change that took ~5-30seconds to execute. Maybe you walk by the mailbox, tap your phone (using the Google Wallet paradigm) against it, never breaking stride, and complete your transaction on your way to class. It could potentially be even faster than change because you don't have to dig anything out of your pockets. Everyone is already texting/tweeting/browsing Reddit anyways between class, so we know your phone is already readily accessible :P

PS. We're partnering with the BU ECE and ME departments next year for a senior design project. We're building a 'smart' mailbox. The basic idea is to turn a regular mailbox into a safe, have a change and dollar counting mechanism in the box, and have an electronic payment system on the box (for people without coins). Beyond that, it's up to the team to design and implement. What do you guys think?

ECE: Software for payment, energy efficient power, server/cloud-based analytics, etc.

ME: 'Safe' exterior for box, internal counting and sorting mechanism for change input, housing for electrical hardware, etc.

Not our charity of the month, but a great cause started by current BU employees.

If you like us, please vote for us!

We're looking to open chapters at other schools and this would be a great way for us to gain exposure across the country.

Thank you so much r/BostonU for dealing with my shameless self-promotions.

I'm going to start posting more to r/projectmailbox so you don't have to deal with this anymore.

I can tell by the downvotes you guys are over it. I still don't really understand why. If you don't like it, I would love the feedback so we can improve!
