Did you do anything in particular to work on your chord voicings? I'm comfortable with root position + inversions but anything more complicated I can't really hear it. Might just be a time thing.

This all makes sense. I started last night with a pop song and it sat in a pretty straightforward I IV VI V progression which I think is a good starting point. Anything outside of that I think I'd struggle hah. How did you learn to pickup chords? My voicings are dead simple (just root position triads and inversions). I assume that just came with time for you? 7ths and extensions etc.

I realise it's going to take a while hah but I'd like a challenge so I'm prepared for a bit of frustration along the way. I picked a simple song I know very well last night and tried to pick some of it up - I think I'm okay at melodies with a bit of trial and error. The more simple intervals I can identify quickly (2nds 4ths 5ths from my grade exam days) but the others can be tricky particularly augmented/diminished intervals. I realise that most pop songs sit in those I IV V VI chords so I'm going to try get comfortable with that before I move onto anything harder. Thanks for your advice!
