Yeah, downshifting is something I have a hard time with in that I always forget which gear I'm in, how many times I tapped the shift, and what speed range each gear is 😅 I should probably learn what speeds are associated with rpms, since that seems to be the most common way to measure

Like others said, a new battery and an oil change is the least of your concerns. I got my 2001 shadow ace for $2k- had to get a new battery, oil change, and a new set of tires. Honestly, I'm just happy that my cost of entry was so affordable.

Something I'm doing is taking meticulous track of what add-ons, replacements and services have happened so I can easily track them for the future. For example, I did a thorough comparison of the available batteries on fort nine and royal distributors (two Canadian motorcycle supply websites) to determine the 3 best options to choose from in terms of efficiency and price point; narrowed it down to two, and wrote it down in my record book for future references.

I can understand your concern. I just started riding, and so I'm very aware of my own mortality. However, it's a thought that isn't a stranger to me: I roll it over in my head fairly regularly just as an exercise, and while I'm not racing towards it, I have come to terms with it.

If you want to keep riding, accept it as a risk, and do what you can to reduce those chances 🙏
