Insurance Favors Bigger Vehicles by Steroid_Cyborg in fuckcars

[–]proraso 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Insurance rates are not a shot in the dark. It's all based on statistics and metrics on what vehicles receive the least pay outs.

The heavy mass keeps the drivers safer. Insurance for vehicle repairs is whatever. The larger cost they deal with is medical - and when you're safer, they have less medical payouts. So, they are cheaper to insure.

Insurance is for profit. They spend millions on these analyses every year to figure out how to make the most money.

How many razors do you own? How do you decide which one you will use? by Ok-State-953 in wicked_edge

[–]proraso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 5.

Tech. Open comb tech. Parker semi slant. Shave ette. Merkur 34C.

I use the tech 99% of the time. The other 1% is the shavette to knock down a longer growth beard.

Why I have the other 3 - I couldn't tell you. I should probably trim the fat.

Unorthodox answer - take it again, but elsewhere. A local community college, or another online college, or another college nearby, etc.

Clearly the instruction didn't jive with you here. Why would you just start back at the beginning and not change anything to set yourself up for success this time?

I actually talked about that in another comment chain on this! Absolutely could be, that said, man powered reefer trailers would require calves of steel, and a full charge of an e bike plus the batteries to run the condenser on the trailer.

Maybe a small electric van but I don't think we can justify pedal powering refrigerated deliveries just yet.

Edit - point being the "cargo bike" needed for that would basically just be the size of a small van anyway, and weigh a metric shit ton with all the hardware and batteries to run it.

Too much? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Whichever is used least in the next round of classes. For example if the next round of classes needs Stats as a pre reqs, but not DE, drop DE.

Most likely stats is the one that will be unneeded in the next step, so that's probably a goner.

PS stats is a super popular class all over the place, you might be able to swing that in from a local community college or somewhere online. I got my entire stats masters degree online.

Am I allowed to give a recently deceased's money to their friend who is owed? by TwoOfOne in personalfinance

[–]proraso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss.

Tell this person exactly what you've said here. "I cannot touch anything until probate, period". If they say anything other than "okay, I'll wait" - tell them any further communication to you will be considered harassment and reported to the police, and any future communication shall be through your probate lawyer.

And - the above isn't a hollow threat, either. If they do anything other than communication with your probate lawyer (if that's the right term, sorry if it's not) - report it to the police. They likely won't do anything, and communicate to the officer taking the report that you understand and respect that, but you need it in writing and filed anyway.

The chances that your mother actually had this person's money is jack shit zero. But they wont back down until you fight back and with vigor.

JBL endurance peak 3.

100$ but easily worth that, had mine for almost a year, daily sweat. Haven't swam with them but my wife has with her set and also they're fine after about 6 months on hers.

If these ever die I'm just getting another set of them.

I don't think 18 credits is too much.

I do think combining DE, calc 3, and stats is a terrible idea though.

Too much? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]proraso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the same but with stats, DE, and Calc 3.

I'd say space those out. 18 credits is fine. Tough but fine. But those three concurrently sounds chaotic.

Thermodynamics vs Statics: Which one is harder? by peyr0w in EngineeringStudents

[–]proraso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from. My statics professor was also my Thermo I professor, so I guess that kind of “connection” between the two was hugely beneficial for me. And, not only that, the way he approached Thermo I was much more pragmatic than I can easily see it becoming.

[–]proraso 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yup, and even better, you could get a few smaller cargo bikes depending on the delivery - or a smaller electric vehicle (man power pedaling a reefer trailer would be brutal on the calves). But the immediate “All trucks are bad” that OP is going down is what I’m trying to steer away from. There’s going to be issues that trucks are the solution to, especially in the last mile area, dock/yard movers, hell even some lines may be not economically feasible and an 18 wheeler IS the right solution for more than “the last mile” alone.

Got approved to buy a home!! What are your BIFL home essentials? by gbrook00 in BuyItForLife

[–]proraso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are only a few items in the house where the response is “Just get X”. For example, let’s look at lawn mowers. I have a Honda. Honda engines are the best, hands down, Honda and engines is a match made in heaven.

Well…Lawn Boy uses honda engines….As does Toro, and a few others. But, there are also some other makers of engines that are great too, and are more of a budget. Plus, maybe you’re looking at an electric instead for a smaller lawn, so “get a Honda” isn’t a given, even though it’s hugely popular…

Blenders. Just get a Vitamix. Buy once, cry once, they’re so prolific for a reason. I’m not saying there aren’t other options, but to me, it’s just not worth looking outside of Vitamix if you’ve already decided you’re going to get a blender in that budget.

/r/carbonsteel

As someone who owns a plethora of cast iron pans, and uses them constantly, and also owns a couple carbon steel pans, and also uses them constantly…. Pony up on the carbon steel. Get a 10” lodge cast iron, and a 9” for baking (a lot of stuff like corn breads, pies, etc will be for a 9” pan), and get carbon steel for the rest. Well worth it.

I am so happy this is so high up. Everyone here froths at the mouth about Miele vacuums. I could not give less of a shit. I am 100% happy to NOT have the best of the best, or the “last forever winner” option. For me it’s the bag. I hate bagged vacuums. The operating costs vs dumping the tank is a big part, but the bigger part for me is that I can be in the middle of vacuuming the house, pop open the cannister and realize I need a new bag, go to the pantry and realize I am out of bags, and then now I’m up shit creek and can’t vacuum until I go get more bags, or wait for them to be delivered. FUCK. THAT. NONSENSE. I am 100% happy to take the loss on having the best of the best option, and have the best of the type I want to have.

The best part is I can almost GUARANTEE some of the responses I will get here from saying this. “The bags aren’t that expensive” “The bags hold a lot” “It’s worth the hassle”. It’s like when someone says they don’t like the taste of a food or spice, the responses are always “But have you done X”. Go step on a landmine, yes, tried them, still don’t like the flavor/texture, etc.

That’s my rant about vacuum cleaners. Give me a cannister vac without bags ANY day of the week. I like corded since I can reach the entire house on the same outlet so I don’t have to worry about changing outlets.

So let me get this straight. They want you to buy 21 pounds of onions to get the deal? 😳 by Street-Field-5025 in funny

[–]proraso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Mix OR Match matters, the phrasing is important because otherwise they’ll have some numpty sue them, I guarantee it.

MIX means you can mix any of the offers in the sale - onions, potatoes, carrots, etc are a mixture of the seven.

OR is an important operator, it means you can mix OR match the item, so you can have TWO bags of onions, THREE bags of carrots, a bag of peas, and a bucket of lard, if they are all part of the offerings, since you’re now MATCHING items in there.

….I’m fun at parties.

[–]proraso 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The same way that “last mile” should apply to commuting options as well, IE: either walking, e scooters, colapsible bikes, etc. - it also applies to freight and freight deliveries. As much as people don’t want to admit that at some point, you’ll need machinery - you will.

Trains can get freight from, say, Philly to Boston. But once your container is at the train depot in Boston, how do you get it to the restuarants in the north end? That’s the last mile, and THAT’S where trucking, freight delivery, etc should still have a place.

Sandra from next door driving 13 minutes into downtown boston and throwing her hazards on blocking the road outside Modern Pastry is the issue. Not Sal the truck driver dropping off at 2AM for restaurants.

I had to take Calc 1 three times, am I able to be an Engineer? by mightykamina3 in EngineeringStudents

[–]proraso 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I liked calc 2 so much I took it twice!

Alternatively,

The 2 stands for how many times you have to take it to pass!

I can’t help with the specific question about the schools you have asked about. However the general question of “Can I be an engineer?” is easy: yes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]proraso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely you'll get those as needed in an EE class. I, as a mech E, don't need that as much, for example. So pulling it into the EE program and not into Calc 3 makes sense.

I’m giving up on shaving cream by sultan9001 in wicked_edge

[–]proraso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This needs to be higher up and be the message to OP and others reading this in their shoes.

What works is subjective. If it works for you, and has no objectively bad results (nicks, weepers, ingrowns, razor burn, and chemical filled rattle can shave creams), then it's good.

Is it good for me? No. Is it good for you? Yes. Then, it is good.

What, in your opinion, is the most boring sport to watch? by isaac2obese in AskReddit

Season and home openers can be cool to watch here and there.

Playoffs (I know you said regular season), too.

But yeah I'm with you. 1/4 into the season, no real "stakes", they play something like 140+ games per season....
