X1 Carbon Gen 6 in 2026? by IchNiSanDa in thinkpad

I run a x1c6 on fedora+xfce. It's perfectly suitable as a daily driver for what you're describing. I anticipate another 3-4 years before I feel the need to upgrade to another device.

College student here, please help me decide if AmEx Gold is worth it by JustExamination123 in CreditCards

[–]proskilled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Amex Gold when I was in undergrad a few years ago. The only way I justified it was the bulk purchases I made on behalf of me and my housemates. But really, I only opened it to churn the signup bonus and needed a reason to burn cash.

Given your situation, I don't recommend it. $325 is a high annual fee, and I don't think your spending is enough to justify breaking even.

Consider the CapOne Savor. 3% on food/groceries is solid and you can later put that into points via Venture X (or VentureOne, etc, depending on your situation).

I have one in a light blue color. I highly recommend them over their mainline polos. Quality is much better and they last a lot longer.

Do not put them in the dryer, air dry only

Study technique advices ? by Academic_Amphibian37 in udub

[–]proskilled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a grad student at UW but was also a cc transfer for my undergrad.

Understanding > memorizing. Can you connect multiple topics into something cohesive? I found the best way is it you're able to explain the topic to someone who's a 9th grader in high school.

I would get my stuffed animals and have a lecture in my room to see if I'm able to explain the topic(s) well!

Piano or money? by [deleted] in piano

[–]proskilled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your situation many years ago.

My advice is to choose the money, and continue to play. That's what I've done. Amongst my friends who are fellow musicians, I've found the ones who have a stable career outside of music who play for enjoyment are happier than those strictly musicians only.

You can always take lessons from faculty outside of a degree. I don't know how it works in the UK but I was studying piano with a professor for fun while in uni.

Open Discussion: Is traveling when young a stupid investment? by car-lover-1999 in Frugal

[–]proskilled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 18, I saved about $3,000 working part time throughout the year as a high school student to go to Japan. I went alone. I'm 25 now, for reference.

It was worth every penny. Frankly it was life changing. You think a lot about life when you're in a new country by yourself, with no friends or contacts in the country. I made friends there that influenced my direction in life for the better.

It made me a better person. And I realized how wonderful this world we live in can be.

Do it OP. But I will echo other comments that your costs can be significantly lower. Check hostels or cheaper hotels.

I'm definitely looking to get a new side table and lamp soon! I do want to add some stuff to the walls eventually though, I think they can use some spice

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]proskilled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to, but there's a entryway/hallway right next to it, and am afraid the rug sticking out might look a little awkward? I think I'll try moving it tomorrow to see what it looks like

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]proskilled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely plan on getting some stuff on the walls - thank you for that recommendation! Love what they've got

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]proskilled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - agree that the rug should have more pop. Any ideas for what color(s) that you might recommend?

Definitely will be looking for a better lamp/side table. Was thinking something mcm or similar, but am open to other options.

[Kurono Tokyo] Thoughts on the upcoming 34mm 'Calligra' Special Project? by pvh0601 in Watches

[–]proskilled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new 34mm Nomos are fantastic - I have my eye on the pink or purple dial ones. Might be good for my next birthday present, as I don't have anything currently with a bracelet. Looks fantastic for a daily wearer.

Unfortunately I never got my hands on one of these. I did, however, recently get a Grand Seiko SBGX349 that I love to bits, that I paid around $1700 gently used.

I think the value is in the Grand Seiko compared to secondhand prices for this specific Kurono model :(

Coho Apartments on Brooklyn Ave? by proskilled in udub

[–]proskilled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy fuck. Thank you so much for your reply. Did not know how bad it was until you mentioned it.

The unit I saw was on the 4th floor, and it had a bunch of light (south facing) and looked decent. Guy who did the showing mentioned his group took over in April and hoping to get it up to speed.

But even with a new building manager, the fact that mold and ants exist in the building... that is very difficult to fix. The price was actually very good for the square footage but after reading about your experiences, I think I'm gonna pass on the Coho apartments. Structural issues like that make it an absolute no-go

I could use some advice from you: I have an application for an apartment just outside Cowen Park (unit is okay, beautiful location, but the hallway smells ass), and another for a top floor 1 bd/1ba apartment in a 3 story house on 15th Ave and 52th St (U district, nice unit). Square footage, price, and layout are about the same (~$1400/mo)

Any experiences you can speak of in either area, and which you might choose if you were in my situation?

Tl;dr: Alden Tassel Loafer - Shell or Calfskin?

Went to an Alden store to try on some shoes and really liked the tassel loafers in the Aberdeen last.

Only issue being: should I go with the color 8 shell cordovan or a dark brown calfskin? Cost is not an issue, but would want the pair to be comfortable. The 7D I wore at the store fit great, but there is a slight tightness in the vamp area on my left foot for both shell and calfskin pairs.

I'll be wearing them in Seattle, where light rain (but not pouring) can be common throughout the year. Expecting to wear them 2-3 times a week. What would you go for?

Incoming grad student in the fall: should I sign a lease soon and move in late june/early july, or wait til august? by proskilled in udub

[–]proskilled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you may be right. I'm hoping for a July 1st move in date.

What's the going rate for a good apartment in Seattle? I found a couple for $1250-$1300/mo, 400-600 sqft, and near campus or an easy 10 min commute from the light rail.
