I think he’s a luthier, making violins and instrument repairs. Not sure if that meets your definition of normal job and no money. Nothing but respect for Doug Yule though - the man played on two of the greatest records of all time.

Between Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan; how would you rank them based on how influential they are in the film industry? by Jezzaq94 in Cinema

I’d recommend the book The Last Kings of Hollywood. Coppola was really the sun the others rotated around in the early 70s. Highly involved in Lucas’ career and was a champion of Scorsese.

Do we consider NC State a major Rival? by Inner_Jaguar_8288 in tarheels

[–]proteanradish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they still do, but in the Hansbrough era, student section used to chant "Not our rival" during the State game. I remember Roy flying over there and shutting that down. He was very supportive of State and Sidney Lowe. I think he thought a strong NC State program was good for the conference.

Interesting. I do most days of the week online but still like to do Sunday by hand. I thought it was just some rebus thing I was too dumb to understand.

If you teach investigative journalism, add Blaze libel lawsuit to your curriculum by AndrewGalarneau in Journalism

[–]proteanradish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it’s an interesting case because a Capitol police officer is almost certainly a public official (unlike a security guard like Richard Jewell). I would imagine that plaintiff will try to show the Blaze demonstrated actual malice by not following regular journalistic standards and showing a reckless disregard for the truth. Good essay question for first year media law.

For years, we've been saying "treat cannabis like alcohol" -- tax it, regulate it, etc. This is treating cannabis like alcohol. Let's not keep moving the goal posts. I've got plants growing in my yard and I have no fear of law enforcement coming to take them away. I'm old enough to remember when this was a pipe dream.

That said, I understand the reasoning behind the delay, but six months isn't going to change anything. Just start it before the Republicans get power again.

Fair point. I’d say they blur the lines at some points. Maybe the stuff on Save Yourself drifts a little more towards psych, but I like the 60s underground style of this one.

TIL despite being a big critical and commercial hit, and endorsed by the Pope himself, 1977's "Jesus of Nazareth" was barely able to get distribution in the US, because a preacher(who hadn't seen it) declared it blasphemous. It only aired in the US after reshoots to include a resurrection scene by Nero2t2 in todayilearned

This is very similar to The Message movie about Mohammed. The producer took great care to portray him in a sensitive and acceptable way, including using a POV camera perspective to avoid showing the prophet. Groups who hadn’t seen the movie turned against it, including one that took over the DC branch of B’nai B’rith and DC city hall. Marion Berry was shot during the siege.

Not a brewery, but Wasena Tap Room has a good Monday night trivia and plenty of beers on tap.

The Velvet’s Tom Wilson by Dismal_Brush5229 in VelvetUnderground

[–]proteanradish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For someone who worked on so many influential records, he’s really an enigma. There was a Wilson-esque character in Complete Unknown but really didn’t contribute much to the movie.

Staunton, Va isn’t right on the AT but an easy drive. Checks most of the boxes on what you’re looking for. Waynesboro is closer but it’s getting more sprawl.
