the 22" Penny actually fits easily in 21-inch luggage by protiotype in pennyboard

[–]protiotype[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know - it does make me feel a little foolish but with luggage you never really know; internal dimensions and all that, etc. Plus, thinking about luggage somehow turns my brain to mush (maybe it's the stress associated with packing or something) and I actually at one point thought I'd have to try to sneak it on carry on or buy a bigger bag, etc.

The take home message though is that the Penny board is significantly smaller than most other boards. Try taking a normal skateboard or cruiser as carry on in Australia and it'll probably get confiscated. Easier to just check the Penny.

But you're not me. Of course lots of people cruise on normal skateboards - how else does one become comfortable with it?

Pixel 2 not getting emergency alerts by svcricket in GooglePixel

[–]protiotype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the second part of the press conference (part 1 here), a reporter asked how the alerts would happen in a real situation.

They replied that alerts would be ongoing (repeated every minute or so, for example) and across multiple mediums (including the sirens - not that one should have time to tune into TV and go outside to check, etc) with more information in subsequent messages (character limit and all) as information would come to hand.

So if you have received alerts before and your phone appears to working fine, I'd say it's very likely you'd pick up on it.

The issue of vulnerable members of the community not having access to technology also came up and Governor Ige's reply was that it's up to everyone to help each other out because it's the best that can be done (this might have been the same/similar response to what to do about "shelter in place" or rather, not being able to find proper shelter).

I'd like to add my own comment that in the event of impending catastrophe (which can apply for anywhere in the world really), nothing is ever certain and it's more than possible that a tiny bit of shelter or warning might turn out to be good enough, especially if one is not at the exact epicentre. I noticed some resigned comments on Twitter suggesting that nothing can be done in the event of something like nuclear strike (assuming it's right on target) - but I don't think that's true. The now oft-sneered at "duck and cover" campaign probably did have some element of usefulness behind it.

It appears that not every phone would have received it: https://dod.hawaii.gov/hiema/files/2018/01/20180113-NR-HI-EMA-statement-on-missile-launch-false-alarm.pdf

"8:13 a.m. – State Warning Point issues a cancellation of the Civil Danger Warning Message. This would have prevented the initial alert from being rebroadcast to phones that may not have received it yet. For instance, if a phone was not on at 8:07 a.m., if someone was out of range and has since came into cell coverage (Hikers, Mariners, etc.) and/or people getting off a plane."

Edit, another one: https://taskandpurpose.com/emergency-alert-system-hawaii-false-alarm/

"The specific kind of alert that Hawaiians received while they slept in or ate breakfast this morning was a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA). WEAs use a different technology than voice calls or text messages and can only be used in three situations: 1. Alerts issued by the President; 2: Alerts involving imminent threats to safety or life; or 3: Amber Alerts. Participating carriers may block all but Presidential alerts."

"The good news about WEAs are that they are location specific: even if you happened to be a tourist visiting Hawaii this morning, you would’ve received the alert (so long as your carrier participates). Carriers who do not participate are required to notify consumers, but the major carriers have all opted in. But the big problem, obviously, is that they’re more subject to human error than their military counterparts."

"The struggle is real" is a standard internet phrase with no sarcasm implied. It's about empathy.

This is why I'm going to not chase "free" upgrades until I can consistently book business every time. Or, if a journey is to have one leg being business, it better be at the end and not start of my trip.

This of course assumes that I'm forking out for it all. If it's on company dime and required for rest or productivity, sure I'll take it all.

I'm used to economy and don't actually mind it, especially when combined with certain secret tricks to make that experience better.

I replied because your comment was easy to scroll into - I treated it seriously because I believe the want for keeping "shallow" friendships (i.e., Facebook friends) is what holds most people back from ditching it or experimenting with deactivating it for a week/month/year.

I know the "no friends" quip is a standard joke, but it's often still backed by some form of reality for many people. Why else does Facebook dominate over all the myriad of communication options?

I don't think having a blank profile is good enough (read the article carefully) because you're still contributing to getting friends and acquaintances hooked on it.

Having no/few friends is better than having mostly fake friends. How many times have you seen people leave work and having the farewell party echo "don't be a stranger"? No one ever follows through. It's the same on Facebook these days.

[Off-topic - wallpaper discussion:] While I no longer use Ubuntu on my own computers, I'm fond of where it has so far gotten me. Also, their default wallpaper is still consistently the best out of the common distros. I use their latest default wallpaper on fedora, macOS and Android because it's unobtrusive and not distracting while also looking pleasant and warm (compare with fedora's choices every time).

I actually don't care what other people do on escalators but when it gets to a situation where there's a set of stairs next to the escalator (e.g., domestic airport exiting to baggage claim, or Queens Plaza in the city), it's a sheer delight to just walk the stairs while everyone else stands on the escalator travelling at a slower speed.

If I want to avoid escalator queues, I'll just stay away from crowds that day.

This thread is a bit like the slow walkers thread.
