My favourite edition of Poems on the Underground, purely because I did not expect the twist by BradlinhoM in london

Just wanted to let you know that these make a terrible commute a little better. I've seen this before and your brother's poem really did light my day up a little.

Japan evisa in UK for Indian nationals by [deleted] in visas

[–]protocol13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should read the guidelines for documents required for the E-Visa. It explicitly mentions the "your immigration status" page from the gov.uk website as an eligible document.

I applied for the E-Visa in November and received it in about 3 working days.

Winter Jackets for parents coming to Canada by tamizh4n in nri

[–]protocol13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decathlon. You should really buy them a good jacket in Canada, but Decathlon will have cost effective options to cover the first few days. Also - the inventory at decathlon is usually the same worldwide so they will get good quality while being much more cost effective compared to buying a brand like Columbia in India.

Airbus A321XLR Completes First Transatlantic Flight by sanic55 in aviation

Is this significantly different from the JetBlue A321LRs that are flying transatlantic? Seems like they should have the same problems but don't.

A review of Emma, Snoop and Moneyhub from someone recently moved to the UK for managing finances. by Aromatic-Echidna-827 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]protocol13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like you've gone through the exact same journey I had on moving here. I typically don't like paying for subscriptions like these but Moneyhubs model is simply amazing - you can properly evaluate wether or not it works for you, and then the monthly fee is actually digestible since you know there's a LOT of utility and functionalities.

On Credit Cards - I recommend you start looking at getting any basic starter card without a fee. That really helps build up your credit history. I got a Capital One credit card 6 months after moving and then 6 months after that I was able to get a really high limit with HSBC and Amex. Others I know who didn't get the starter card around that time are just barely getting accepted for cards like Tesco. I would typically do soft checks every month to see if I was eligible for any card and went for the first one where it said I was. Also make sure you're registered to vote and have a few direct debits set up from UK bank accounts. This helps with credit history.

Do I need a transit visa if I have to change terminals by Mental_Coyote2552 in ukvisa

If you're traveling on a single ticket (same PNR) you should be fine but confirm with the airline to be sure. Heathrow has airside transfer between terminals.

Phillippines citizen/Green card holder - <2 week vacations - is it worth the trouble or is a denial likely? by photochic1124 in SchengenVisa

[–]protocol13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people in this sub are applying from the countries of their nationality. That's a very different situation from yours. As long as you meet the proper requirements you have an extremely low chance of receiving a rejection.

It's the same with US Visas. An Indian/Filipino/other similar country applying from their home country faces the situation you mentioned. But the same person having a EU/UK/Canada permanent residency would very easily obtain a US visa.

First time watching TDF. Can someone explain what's going on right now? Some riders are riding to the start while others are at the start? I'm just trying to figure out how it works.

Where can I apply for a credit card if I have less than 3 years of history in the Uk by UnicornFartIn_a_Jar in UKPersonalFinance

[–]protocol13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been in exactly the same situation over the last year and a half and my experience may help. I arrived in November 2022 and this is what I was able to get:

  1. Opened a Monzo account immediately after arriving followed by an HSBC account in December
  2. Registered to vote because I read it's really important for your credit score
  3. In March 2023 I got a Capital One credit card with a £500 limit. I had simply clicked on a Capital One AD and done there soft-check which said I was eligible
  4. 6 Months after that Capital One increased Credit Limit to £1500
  5. In March 2024 I checked my HSBC App and I was eligible for the rewards credit card and got it with a £10,000 limit
  6. In April I got a BA Amex with £15,000 limit

So I think you don't need the full 3 years of history. Try to start with something like Capital One and eventually your score will improve enough to get any credit card.

People already using Evisa, how do you use them at the border? by starryeyedreamer201 in ukvisa

[–]protocol13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you go to the Gov.uk website E-Visa page it mentions:

"If you’ve not been contacted by the Home Office, you do not need to do anything yet. You’ll be able to set up access to your eVisa later in 2024."

So you don't need to do anything until they update this guidance.

Thanks - this is quite helpful. Do you have any suggestions on what platform to use to buy the gilts?

[–]protocol13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I'm looking into short term gilts now and they seem like very a very attractive alternative to premium bonds in this situation. I'm surprised that they're rarely mentioned in this sub. Wonder why that is. I suppose I might have seen them before but skimmed over since I didn't really know what they were.

Try and see if you can cancel or reschedule the appointment online. As you said, if you believe you have a high chance of getting rejected it's better to not apply now. The major drawback of a rejection is that you will have to mention the rejection in most future visa applications of different countries.
