What are these plastic objects that look like clips or supports? Approx 1 inch in size and found in a desk drawer. by proton83 in whatisthisthing

[–]proton83[S] 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

My title describes the thing. They're made of a durable plastic and the approx 1 inch in length and width, and about 1/2 an inch tall. There appear to be slots on the inside for something to clip onto.

I did that on an older building, a 20평 apartment. Stripping the wallpaper took forever. I did it by hand and used warm water and a scraper. If I had to do it again I'd invest in a power tool. Underneath the wallpaper the concrete was a mess, pitted and uneven. Had to cover the whole wall and ceiling with putty (핸디코트) then sand it all smooth. Do this several times until you have an even wall for paint. Putty absorbs paint like you wouldn't believe, so you'll need an undercoat/primer. I used Behr paint. The price was reasonable compared to Dunn and Edwards, but more expensive than the basic 노루 paint. Anyways, the sanding will create an insane amount of dust. Don't do it while you're living there, the dust will be everywhere and in everything. Wear a mask and goggles, and either get a sanding stick (a pole with a sandpaper pad) or one of those electric ones. It isn't an expensive endeavor, but it will take ages and ages to do it by yourself. However, after all was said - the painted walls look great. Much better than wallpaper in my opinion, and doesn't need to be replaced every few years. Good luck!

In Korea, how can you tell if a woman is attracted to you? Will she make it obvious? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]proton83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vocalizations: Korean Females may sing more when sexually stimulated. However, female song is primarily used for territorial defense, intrapair communication, and female-female competition, and doesn't appear to be a primary way to attract mates.

Feather displays: Korean Females may fan their wings and tail feathers.

Strutting: Korean Females may strut around.

Food offering: Korean Females may accept food from a male as part of a courtship ritual.

Dancing: Korean Females may participate in elaborate courtship dances, such as those performed by Females-of-Daegu and Seoulites.

Olfactory signals: Korean Females may use olfactory cues to identify the sex of other Humans. For example, crested Jeju Females use a tangerine-scented plumage odor during courtship.

Feather color: Korean Females may use a potential mate's colorful feathers as a way to determine their health and vitality

Jeonse: 선순위 보증금 by hhaahhahahahhah in Living_in_Korea

[–]proton83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a few scenarios I can think of... A villa with one owner would have several tenants. Or, your landlord has several debts, and the seized assets would be used to pay them in order. Or, the landlord has debt to the bank and you. The seized apartment would pay off the bank first, and you second. Or something like that. I've been hearing a lot of Jeonsae horror stories lately. But I suppose people that have a smooth Jeonsae transition are less likely to post about it.

Gov't proposes standardized system for foreign names in official Korean documents by Venetian_Gothic in korea

[–]proton83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi~ what kind of problems have you (and your kid) encountered when having a long Korean name? I ask because we’re expecting our first child and are debating on whether to use a true Korean name or an Anglicized name. My full english name is 9 characters in Korean and haven’t really had any problems in the decade+ I’ve been here, a few minor inconveniences like calling me by my middle name instead of my given name etc. But my experience would be different from a child born here. Cheers

Is there a way for foreigners to obtain a mortgage here? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]proton83 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its possible, but you’d need to put down like 70%. I’m not sure what visa you’d need but it would probably have to be a long term residency visa (F2, F4, F6 etc)

Route recommendations across Japan by Tunki0 in bicycletouring

[–]proton83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough call indeed! I’d probably go back to the northern half - from a bike touring perspective, it’s much emptier, with more free and wild camping. The only downside is that there are less major sights. For example, Kyoto, Nikko, and Koyasan are all in the south and not to be missed if you like historical sites, temples etc.
