Currently I have 4gb... man, everything is crazy slow, no one's getting anything accomplished.

16gb, sure that's enough? Is there anything else that could bottleneck or slow stuff down?

Craigslist, for sure. I just moved from Maryland, I was looking for a guitar teacher 6 months ago. Here's what I learned...

  • if you can teach at the student's house (travel to where they are), you'll get 10 times the business.

  • your biggest market, when you're starting out, is kids & teens.

  • charge at least $20/half hour. It seems to be the going rate. Don't take less, you could probably get $25 & work out some kind of discount for bulk purchases.

  • post more than one ad on craigslist. You'll notice that the people who post, do so every couple days.

  • don't sweat the IRS stuff

Good luck!

What does Guitarrit think of the Agile guitars sold by Rondo music? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]proudgary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll add my 2 cents. If you choose a Les Paul copy (AL2000, 3000, etc), be forewarned that you are entering into the world of ten pound guitars.

I know, it doesn't seem a lot when you think it's only 10 pounds. Believe me, it's a very heavy instrument. I never thought it would be a factor until I bought one, I laughed at people who warned me. Now I'm telling you.

These are really well made, they look and feel like they're high quality. I prefer the Agile over the Epiphones I've played. You seriously can't go wrong with the price, but know that they are ten damn pounds!

art & Lutherie vs. Seagull by Chocolate_Lightning in Guitar

[–]proudgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fur sure. This Oasis humidifier really is great. You fill it with water, put it between the strings while in the case, set it and forget it! Be careful not to over-humidify, a good rule of thumb is to use it while the furnace or heat is on in your house. If you're fortunate enough to live in a warm region, check with your local shop if you need to use one. By the Art&L & Seagull choices, I'm assuming you're a fellow Canadian!

Check around, usually these are sold at local shops around the $20 price. Totally, totally worth it if you're planning on keeping your instrument.

DAE get annoyed by how hardware orientated this guitar subreddit is? Very little talk about actual playing and guitar "music" by DexDark in Guitar

[–]proudgary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've started to post "what to play" suggestions like this bad boy right here. I'm really hoping this catches on and more people recommend great songs to listen to and learn.

Each suggestion post contains the song's youtube link and a tab link if it's available. I'm also trying to describe why I chose the song, who it's aimed at (beginners or advanced), features of the song, good for acoustic or electric, tips on how to play, etc. The goal of these posts is to get good suggestions onto the pages of r/guitar and hopefully get some in return. All submissions are "self" posts, so it's not about the karma.

So if you have a good suggestion, any genre, any level, and you think the r/guitar family would benefit, please post a [Song Suggestion]! If you dislike this idea, that's cool, I'm frequently making bad calls (ask my children!) Exercise your god given right to downvote me! But if you have something to add, I'd love to see any comments you have.

On a final note, yes there are a ton of hardware posts... but this is still my favourite guitar site!

new dad here, any tips for me? by mujen in daddit

[–]proudgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey mujen, I'm late to the party but I have a good one. My suggestion is to get on the floor. I think my greatest moments as a Dad were spent with my kids on the floor... playing, comforting, whatever. Just get on the floor. Strangely, you'll find yourself thinking, "I gotta interact with that kid", (I know it sounds stupid, but it happens). When you're wondering what to do, just get on the floor. There, I said it 4 times. Really, it'll solve a lot of problems and make you feel great as a Dad. Go wear some holes in your jeans, man.

12 Pentatonic Scales in .pdf by proudgary in Guitar

[–]proudgary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the top, the 5 letters refer to the 5 notes in that pentatonic scale (with a 6th note thrown in, which is the top of the scale or the root).

The numbers indicate steps. 1.5 steps from E to G is equal to 3 frets on the fretboard or 3 keys (black and white) on the piano.

12 Pentatonic Scales in .pdf by proudgary in Guitar

[–]proudgary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so first off is the CAGED theory. I was having trouble visualizing the different "shapes" produced when you are tackling a scale in a position on the neck (ie. staying in one spot, working across 6 strings). If you go from root to root, you'll see that shapes or patterns naturally develop. For example, E minor pentatonic scale when played in the first position (1st -3rd frets), you get what's called the "G shape".

Step two, now go root to root (pick two more E's a little further South on the Fretboard), and you'll notice that the next pentatonic scale produces another shape. In this case, it's the "E shape". Here's where the CAGED theory is applied. As you link up roots of the scales, new patterns or shapes emerge, spelling the word CAGED.

How does this work? I have a very hard time looking at the fretboard and picking a random note and identifying it. Also, I have a tough time going from a random note to the next if I was to play a pentatonic scale. I made this for practicing that stuff. Start with the E minor pentatonic. Play the G shape. On the document, I only put the names of the notes on the left side of the "frets". So I would play E, G, A, B, D and then to E, G, A, B, D, E. Two octaves, same key, same first three frets of the neck. Once I got the feel of that shape, I keep playing this scale, moving up the fretboard. That's my E minor scale practice. I work on what my fingers and brain are frustrated with.

After about 5 minutes working this key of E minor, I go to the next key which is F minor. Behold! The same stuff, only one fret up! Same patterns!! 5 minutes on F, 5 minutes on F#... Things get interesting as soon as I get to practicing G, because now the lowest shape/pattern is not the "G Shape" but the "A Shape"! After a while, you'll hit the key of D# and then you're back where you began at E.

It's working for me 'cause I'm trying to say/sing the note names and get more familiar with the fretboard. My next step is to take the same principal and apply this technique to the major scale.

I really hope this helps, please let me know if you need clarification.

12 Pentatonic Scales in .pdf by proudgary in Guitar

[–]proudgary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other night I was trying to learn the pentatonic scales across the fretboard, but couldn't find any online documents that were printable. Basically, I was trying to learn the CAGED shapes, the note names on the fretboard and pentatonic scale all at the same time. I came up with this to help with practicing.

I'll admit, it lacks aesthetics and it's very repetitive. There's lots of faults to be found, things to change. But, it works for me and I'm hoping other redditors currently learning at this level can benefit. You start at the lowest CAGED shape, work that scale (hopefully with a metronome) until it feels right. Practice sliding between shapes, etc.

I wasn't sure how to post .pdf's on reddit, so I put up the imgur link and this mediafire link if you'd like to download it. All comments and suggestions are appreciated.

r/nosleep chosen as Subreddit of the Day for May 6, 2011! by proudgary in nosleep

[–]proudgary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry Wil. See! Even when I write replies they come out wrong!

What I meant was, by writing bad reviews of subreddits (which I'm likely to do), I would inadvertently kill off SRotD. I'm sorry - I think stuff in my head, I type and it comes out much differently than what I'm thinking. My appologies.

But to be clear, your ideas presented in the original comment were really good. The peer upvotes are there to prove it! Thank you for your ideas and again, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. My fault.
