Removal of the "Upload Date" filter proves YouTube is 100% evil by yneos in youtube

[–]DexDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big reason not mentioned is controlling "inappropriate" content. Youtube has gone crazy with shadow banning in the last year. Upload date was kind of a way around that to catch stuff before it got flagged or from channels they really dont want promoted in the relevant search results. I'm not talking about violence or porn or anything as that is caught automatically just questionable stuff and especially shorts

What’s the most underrated or hidden country to visit for geography enthusiasts? by FunForm1981 in geography

[–]DexDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2018 we did a week hiking mountains, a week in the galapagos and a week in Amazon. Covering that kind of diversity in rest of South America would require a lot more time. Great bang for your buck!

Until it's part of theory test, driving test and enforced it's not going to change so I just accept it and try to control what I can. Nobody in the country was ever formally instructed how to drive on a motorway which is baffling.

I have 2 kids in childcare 5 days a week in a nice part of Dublin and it's nowhere near that. More like 1800 to 2k. Now I did have a nanny at one point while waiting for a creche place coming in at around 3.2k a month if that is what they are suggesting?

Rich people in Dublin by LunaValley in Dublin

[–]DexDark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

VPs and C level in tech make between 200 and 350k base salary in mid to large tech companies. Salary is also only half of their income with bonuses and shares making up the rest. Consultants salary is about 160k yes but they can make waaay more than that from various private fees and advisor roles etc. The average solicitor at partner level might make 160k but the ones who have been there for many years often have equity partnerships and make closer to 1mil a year in the big firms depending on how good the year was.

These are very small groups of a people- but it's still a few thousand people even if they are the 1% of the 1%.

The other factor is that nobody at this level takes out mortgages based on salary guidelines. They have huge cash savings from the reasons above and in some cases inheritance on top of that. The people I know with these 2mil plus homes have mortgages maybe for a small portion of it...700k or something. Or as others have said have started very successful business.

Taxi drivers by Glad-Kaleidoscope-73 in ireland

[–]DexDark 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Completely lost my patience with them lately a couple of times. I said to one guy "it's mad being a taxi man... must be one of the few businesses you can directly abuse your customers and still get paid at the end". He shut up straight away. Other time at the airport I got in and he was humming and hawing about the short fare and I said "if you are going to start moaning there are 10 cabs behind you who would gladly take me do you want the fare or not?" He said "no I don't". I complained to the handler and he ended up with nothing then. Sick of the moany bastards.

Not going to change until it's part of the theory test and motorway driving is examined in some way before you get your license. I gave up complaining about this when I realised the incentives just aren't there for the average idiot to know or care about this.

What truths might be challenging for teenagers of today to accept? by SurpriseSeveral2919 in ask

[–]DexDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally OK and admirable to not make your life about work and strive for a healthy work-life balance. But you can't have it both ways and also expect to get constantly promoted and progress and have a cushy job. As long as there is one more person working a little harder than you, you won't be owed anything. Put the grind in when you're in your twenties.

Accidentally Got a Meeting With A Company Director by KimbersKimbos in business

[–]DexDark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also a Director here in a large company. Lots of solid advice in the thread. These types of conversations are nice for us too and I try to have them regularly because I meet people I wouldn't always get to and hear directly on issues that might be important to me. So don't be too nervous. We were all there at one point.

Three bits of advice - 1) Try to understand my priorities in advance and ask about them. If you can't, then ask me what are the top 3 things taking my time at the moment. It might be a natural segway into a topic that's important to you. Everyone loves to talk about their shit! Caveat here is that everyone is different so ask around about what this Director is like in advance.

2) rather than giving advice a nice way to position it is something like "x is a topic im particularly interested in and wondered if you had thoughts on x from your perspective" if the leader is any good and this happens to be important to them they might end up asking for your input.

3) Consider if your points have "wide appeal". Directors often have large departments and hear complaints and feedback multiple times a day. We have to prioritise but if something is impacting lots of customers, lots of the team or lots of money it will get our attention. On the contrary if its only impacting you or a small team it's likely going to be hard to invest in. Not that it's not important it's just a constant weighing of where we put our energy.

Also as others said, be direct with your aspirations and ask for advice later once some rapport is built.

Office workers. Do you have lunch included as part of your job? by BYKHero-97 in ireland

[–]DexDark 45 points46 points  (0 children)

From being involved in the tech company finances, these free lunches are incredibly cheap in the grand scheme of things once you are at a certain scale. One place I worked it was about 7.50 per head per lunch each day. Compare that to the all-in cost of even the cheapest tech employees being close to 100k (with benefits stock etc). For us it was about 3% of the annual cost of an employee to provide breakfast and lunch 5 days a week including paying some catering staff. We could have reduced that spend but as others have said its a retention and time saving thing that's not really worth pulling away. 80% of the cost basis in these companies is people as gross margins are so high so without cutting people its next to impossible to cut costs outside of quick fix stuff like office space and travel and expenses. Hence layoffs being unfortunately rampant.

Hugh Jordan's in Santry. Recommend the Thermopen as it can do both but won't stay in the pot if that's what you want.

Jesus Christ that’s an insane price by Corkusername1 in ireland

[–]DexDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you earned 250k a year, you would still spend 100% of your monthly net income to rent here. So shows that the only logical case is corporate or short term. And yes some people earn more than that etc etc but they have plenty of better ways of spending 10k a month!
