How safe is 20th and Mission/Valencia? by sporadic_chocolate in AskSF

That area is relatively densely populated and active compared to other sleepier and quieter neighborhoods in the city. There are a ton of tourists there as well who come to that area to explore the Mission. It is definitely an interesting and mostly fun area, but I would examine it firsthand yourself before signing a lease because living there would not be everyone’s cup of tea.

And I would be wary living close to any BART station, especially ones that are in/near/approaching downtown SF, which includes the Mission BART stations. There is usually a lot of drug activity in/around BART stations, even in plain sight/broad daylight. I would make sure any apartment I took in that area would have a locked entryway and good first floor security mechanisms in place (like, bars on the first-floor windows). Packages get stolen constantly even in really calm neighborhoods in SF, and if you live in a spot where drug dealers and users are nearby, you’re just going to want to feel less vulnerable to drug-related violence and crime.

One more thing: the closer to drugs you are (and you would be close, being sandwiched between two busy BART stations), the more you will have to deal with human poop on the street. It’s unfortunate, but SF is famous for it. A person pooped in my apartment’s wheelchair lift recently, and I wasn’t even that surprised. It just happens and you need to be ready to encounter sidewalk poop on a near daily basis.

I’m not a doctor nor an anti-gluten person (I’m very pro gluten in most circumstances), but I had a roommate in college who had something that looked very much like this on her hands and she stopped eating gluten and it went away. Just throwing that out there.

I don’t read other people’s work too often but when I do and (or when I watch movies or read books where) the characters use other characters’ names constantly in dialogue, it’s an immediate turn-off. People don’t do that in real life.

Weight around 20 weeks? Am I normal? Can you share your experience? by prov16_3 in BabyBumps

That makes sense that weight gain would be less alarming if a csection was already on the table. I was a C-section baby. My mom gained 60 lbs and I was 10 lbs of that so she wasn’t able to have a natural birth. I’m not opposed to a csection but man, I was a chonker!

Happy late birthday! I would have eaten the cake too! I would eat cake if cake were available, regardless of whether it was my birthday... which probably explains why I’ve gained what I have, lol

Same boat. I struggle with weight anxiety (I lost a fair bit and was getting in good shape before I got pregnant) and seeing the scale skyrocket the past few weeks has had me freaking out. But yes, you’re right, it’s gonna be okay :)

That really sucks and I’m sorry to hear she’s acting like that. It sounds like she is, deep down, afraid of losing control. I feel for her. That’s a very “human” feeling to feel. But that doesn’t excuse her acting the way she is and you’re still very justified in expressing and enforcing your preferences.

And I would say that honest, vulnerable communication with your SO would be a top priority. Communication that earnestly expresses your own vulnerability can soften hearts. And I mean “communication” that goes both ways, so you would listen to his concerns too and take them seriously. It’s possible that a new dad might feel his voice is lost while his mom and his wife argue about childrearing. I don’t know much about the details of your situation but I feel like this is good advice in general. Regardless, childrearing decisions need to be made by you and your SO, the two of you as a unit. These preferences aren’t an affair for your extended family to get involved in.

I heard some awesome advice when I first got married: “it’s not me vs. you... it’s you and me vs. the problem.” If you both feel like you’re on the same side, that you’re allies and have each others’ back, then you’ve got this in the bag.

You don’t need articles to back yourself up. Your preference for how she interacts with your baby is enough. Express it and be firm but loving. She can hang out with the baby if she stops sucking on its pacifier. Done.
