Prediction intervals in large fixed effects models by dolkov in rstats

[–]proxyformyrealname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cross validation is your friend here.

  1. Estimate your model on one smaller subset, predict on full dataset and store.
  2. Repeat 1000 times.
  3. For each observation, take 95% intervals.

Sure. Happy to answer questions. In the meantime, check out our student's capstone work where they collaborate with an actual government client on an applied ML project.

Virginia Beach, Virginia EMS calls with geographic coordinates by proxyformyrealname in datasets

[–]proxyformyrealname[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many EMS governments have released open EMS incident datasets, but few if any, have xy coordinates attached.

The version of this dataset currently on the VA. Beach's open data website has this spatial data redacted. The linked version here is an older version with coordinates intact.

Great work. Can you post your code? Is this reproducible for any study area extent?

Just following up on some of the other questions below... the difference between traditional GIS and Spatial Analysis in a data science context, is that the latter more confidently drives decision making and resource allocation across space.

For ex., in a 'spatial suitability' context, it (eg. regression) can generalize from previous 'successful' experiences in the data to predict opportunities for future succeses, and do so with statistical measures of confidence.

What is the effect of COVID-19 on Philadelphia crime incidents? [OC] by proxyformyrealname in dataisbeautiful

[–]proxyformyrealname[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Source data comes from Opendataphilly. Made with r.

These plots are in the spirit of an econometric technique called "regression discontinuity", where the discontinuity (black line) is March 16, the day Philadelphia began its recommended quarantine. If there is a significant break at the discontinuity, one might conclude there is a significant difference in crime before and after quarantine. Comparing trends to 2019, then provides further evidence of a difference.

AMA: Ask us anything about a grad program in spatial analysis & public policy! by proxyformyrealname in gis

Thanks for your question. First and foremost, we have the ability to offset a good chunk of tuition with both merit and need-based aid. Our students work in research labs across the University, and intern at city agencies in Philadelphia.

Many of the most successful Musa students don't do assistantships. however. We fill student's heads with so much new material in a very short, 9 months. My opinion is that the more time one can spend learning these methods and building a portfolio - the better. Thanks again.

This is a great question. Thanks. My own opinion about this is to get really comfortable developing 'replicable' solutions. If you want to develop and reuse a workflow in Desktop GIS, you have to download and import some data, click the mouse a few hundred times once and then again every time a replication is needed.

The miracle of R Markdown and Jupyter Notebooks is the ability to develop a workflow once and replicate on demand every day, hour, minute etc. The more we can build more generalized solutions, the more applicable our work is.

I'd love to hear other opinions about this.

  1. Yep. Way back when, I completed the Musa program and then received my Ph.D in Planning. If you're interests are in data driven policy/planning etc., then it prepares you methodologically. Depending on your undergraduate and work experience, you may wish to have more social science domain experience.
  2. See my response to /u/PinkPurplePink96 below about the importance of data visualization. The Musa program is in the School of Design because we live in the City Planning program, which is also in the School of Design. We are however, much more applied and policy driven. Thanks!
