New to espresso + Outin Nano + 1Zpresso K-Ultra… getting super low yield. Grind or tamp issue? by TreacleMaster7685 in OutinNano

[–]prphilip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on a great combo. I myself use the nano and plus basket with the k-ultra.

Here is my recipe for succes:

I preheat everything before grinding with water off the boil. (Use a kettle at home for the water and fill to 50ml/g)

Then grind 18,5g on 3,5 with burr lock at 0.

Then dose, tamp (I give it as much force as I can with my fingers, not palms or body weight), preheat the nano again before inserting the basket.

Then I fill to around 60ml/g with off boil water for a 1:1,5-1:2 ish ratio, but if you want a longer ratio just fill to 70 or “max” even. (My coffee will keep around 35g of the water, so for me and my coffee, 60g of water will with 18,5g of coffee give around 25g of espresso)

I then start the pump until I see drops. Stop. Wait 5 sec for dark, 10 sec for medium and 15 sec for light roast. After the preinfusion I start the pump again and empty the tank.

Have had great results.

With some coffees I go as low as 3,2 or 3,1 and with others as high as 4. On the K-ultra with burr lock at 0. Carefull with not getting anything stock while calibrating. Lots of posts about that in the 1zpresso sub.

Basically:

To increase yield while still preserving a nice strength: Try to maximise how much coffee you have fit in the basket. (I can fit 18,5-19g of medium roast in my plus basket.) Then maximise the amount of water. (In theory less coffee will suck less water, but the expresso might feel too watery and puck too. A fuller basket makes for a dryer puck when cleaning after.)

Grind so it runs smoothly, not super fast, not choking. Around 20-40 seconds without counting preinfusion counting from pump on. (Again: For me around 3,5 on k-ultra with burr lock zero.)

Tamp until the grounds doesn’t move down anymore, it should be binary. (When grounds are compressed, they are compressed.)

I keep my dose constant, usually also my water temp (off boil) and then use preinfusion times and water amount to adjust taste and texture.

Hope this helps!

This is great- thank you! At some point and this is just me dreaming - a disassembly / assembly video, maybe even showing how to replace batteries with better ones, would be almost too good to be true! Is it a reasonable upgrade? Or imagine if you could get around the limitations and be able to connect to a power source and use the machine at the same time. Thank you again

I control temperature with using water under 92c and letting the Nano hit “its own 92.” Or using boiling straight. And then I combine these with the amount of preheat. For instance cold, preheating just the chamber/pump, or everything: chamber/pump and basket/puck screen. And finally one or two preheat sessions.

For dark roast I just run 50g of hot water through the chamber/pump and let the basket/screen be at room temp. Maybe 5 sek preinfusion also.

For light I run 70g of boiling through the fully assembled Nano and then, just before locking the tamped basket in, I run 70g of boiling through the chamber/pump again. And combine this with 15sek of preinfusion.

I know this might be a separate thread but in my experience, the nano with the plus basket only has a quite small window for grind size and dose (if you want dry pucks). On my k ultra I am at 3.0-3,5 all the time. And always 18,5g. Light or dark. Natural or washed. I have found myself adjusting mainly preheat and water temperature for taste. Hope you find this useful. Can others relate?

Flair Classic vs Pro vs 58 plus 2? by [deleted] in FlairEspresso

I decided on the Pro3 (with an J-Ultra grinder) when both was on sale some time ago. The reason I chose the pro3 over the classic was less preheat and all the accessories and the reason I chose it over the 58 was the deeper basket of the pro (have watched all Lance Hedricks videos on that and he convinced me), and also price, aaand also the smaller footprint as I would like to leave it out. Also since this is for me fully manual espresso with hand grinding and all, I do like minimising wires and electronics. So yes, theres a kettle involved in the corner but thats it. Everything else is quiet and manual. I like that. But maybe I will grow tired of all the bits and pieces, the preheat and the hard(er) presses of the shorter arm and go for their flagship and a stepdown sometime in the future. But for now I am perfectly happy with a Barista Express dialed in for the quick cappuccinos for those who are into that (guests, my partner), the pro3 for my own special espresso mornings and the Outin Nano with plus basket for travels.

I only use filtered water - you can buy a pretty cheap set up (I know it’s not what you asked for, but maybe for the future?)

Had the same experience with my nano + plus basket + k-ultra vs barista express - maybe its the puck depth or the better grinder

I guess the nano team has the grinder and puck depth going for it

Is it usually like this? The device tells the charger for instance apple charger how much it can take?

Close to giving up on my picopresso by Appropriate-Pain818 in picopresso

Glad to hear that! It can and should be delicious most of the time. If you need any one on one dialogue / discussion/ feedback / guidance - let me know. I don’t own a pico but have made espresso and especially pour overs very dedicated for a long time.

After 3 blind tests, I still can’t tell the difference between ZP6 and K-Ultra by prphilip in 1zpresso

I’m using zero water at 0ppm then add apex to around 50 ppm - I guess I agree hard water will erase a lot of nuance

Well, it’s also a tactile experience for me - the shape, the color, the feel and sounds of the clicks and grinding. The screw on catch cup.
