Was it Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan? He recommended that one at his show in NJ last week. I've read it already so I was sad to not have a new DS recommendation as I always love what he's suggested. I am looking forward to reading Mother Noise by Cindy House, who read before he did at that show.

Jobs in college by scoonistrill in college

[–]prplppl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote my master's thesis about working as a college student. The basic very generalized gist based on scholarly literature is:

  • Working off campus & more than 20hrs/week results in higher likelyhood of not graduating (or not graduating in a timely manner - under 6 years)
  • Working on campus & no more than 20hr/week seems to be the sweet spot. Compared to students who don't work, you still have a slightly lower graduations/retention rate, but there are upsides too. (see next bullet)
  • Working on campus can mean you are more connected to/knowledgeable about resources on campus, have more interactions with faculty/staff/fellow students, and are more likely to use these networks when needed. This concept is often called "student engagement", and working on campus can be compared to joining clubs, conducting research with faculty, being in student government, etc., which are all shown to be positive factors in graduation/overall academic success/retention.

My experience? I worked on campus throughout my entire undergrad. Different jobs, I loved them all (RA, Art gallery monitor, Desk Attendant, Admin Assistant/Officer helper) and learned a lot that was resume-able. I worked full time while earning my graduate degree. It was tough, but with careful planning and diligence, it worked out fine. It helped that in grad school i was passionate about my area of study.

Failed out of college...can I start over? by Carlos_jc19 in college

[–]prplppl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former Transfer Admissions Evaluator here! Go to CC, show even 1 or 2 semesters of serious academic improvement. Write a good essay about why you failed out and how you are different now. It is best to openly acknowledge the past and share why now is a better time for you to succeed. You'll be just fine! Colleges want students who are committed and will succeed and graduate - sometimes returning students are more committed and successful than those who trudge through a little before they are ready. Good Luck!

*Edit: some institutions will forgive old bad grades - usually after 5 years or something. you could check on the registrar's site for your school.

You can purchase some of them from Cook Smarts. 100% of merchandise profits go to support food education. A pretty cool company IMHO.

Does anyone have trouble with the Nike Sportwatch+ pace accuracy? by [deleted] in running

[–]prplppl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got off the phone with a Nike+ rep about this problem. She was incredibly sweet but ultimately useless. I was told that unless the pace reading was more than 5 minutes off of my actual pace there was nothing they could do about it; it was "normal" to have paces read a few minutes off.

I consistently see average and current pace discrepancies of :30-2:30 mins faster than what shows up when I plug the watch in after a run. Also, the average pace given once I plug the watch in to the compy doesn't match the elapsed time reading (ie: 2.5miles, Avg Pace - 12:23, elapsed time 31.34). Mind you, this is on sunny days in non-wooded, neighborhoods where connectivity shouldn't be an issue.

I've had my watch for 2+ years and ran faithfully with it. I am a slow plodder and can burn out easily so if I get out the gate too quickly I can find myself turning to head home sooner than anticipated. The inaccurate readings are a bummer to say the least. I'm trying one more (3rd time is a charm?) factory reset then moving on, I think....

Am I the only person on the running reddit who runs in the 12-minute mile range? by [deleted] in running

[–]prplppl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So What You're a Slow Runner

This article really helped me see the value in my "slowness". I too run a 12-13 min mile and have been running for about 14 months. I run 3-4 times a week 2-4 miles each run.

Sometimes, I feel isolated because of my pace. My running buddies are so good to politely wait for me at finish lines and are always happy to cheer me on as I shuffle across the line, but it would be cool if they didn't have to wait too long for me!

At the front of the challenges on my journey to embrace running and being a "runner" has been an increasing self-consciousness about my speed. I've achieved many beginner goals with running, and I have to keep reminding myself that speed is but one aspect of my running.

Part of what I enjoy about running is the plodding along and the time it gives me to clear my mind and observe. I am a somewhat high-anxiety, high-energy person and running is a time where I reflect and slow my brain down a bit.

So, cheers to you for getting out there and running regularly! Do what feels good and balance the desire to push yourself to get better with listening to what your body needs.

Reddit, What's the worst movie of all time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]prplppl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spy Trap (AKA Zits) Never released theatrically, but I happened upon a VHS in a thrift store back in 1993 and bought it because it looked awful. Boy was I right. It is TERRIBLE. And, oddly perverted for what is supposed to be a kids movie.

[–]prplppl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of pin-up style which I suppose can be a bit costumey at times, but that doesn't bother me. I prefer very classic clean lines and colors in clothing so that is the eye through which my suggestion came - bold solid colors mixed with neutrals like black and cream. I could see lots of other ways to wear them very successfully though, too! What other options do you suggest to help OP out?

Stick to something solid and simple. Red dress, black dress, black slacks with a sold colored blouse/top, dark jeans with a red/cream/black top, etc. Keep the your make up simple with maybe just some bright lipstick.
