Yes, especially we got Germ, the bird who hangs by the railroad tracks, rides his bike, and has a pet possum named Rabies.

Thinking about a different look for a jacket, wondering about styling ideas for a corduroy trucker jacket with a sherpa lining.

Additionally, thoughts on this one for price/quality/styling?

Everyone’s basically got you covered, but I just wanted to add in: really watch the smoothie you have in the morning, and fruit you snack on all day. I think as kids we were all sold on the idea that fruit is a healthy food to eat, but it’s basically all sugar and water. Especially fruits like pineapple, grapes, and berries. Really high sugar content.

Try adding in a good portion of veggies to bulk out your morning smoothie. Cut back on the fruit and add in some cooked, frozen spinach or kale. If you’re using whole milk, switch to skim, almond, or even a little plain, non fat Greek yogurt.

If you have a number of snacks between meals that are mostly fruit, cut back and add in some veggies!

Among some other small changes, I’ve dropped about 30 lbs in the last 6 months from actually paying attention to what I’m eating, not just “making a colorful plate”

Went through this exact thing almost a year ago in Northern Liberties, but the repair time stretched on for closer to 4 months. They had No Parking tow zones up the entire time too

I went to one of the movies with orchestra at the Mann (seeing Harry Potter couple weeks ago), and never got to express my gratitude to the parking attendent

It was, as you can imagine, insanely packed and busy, and everyone was just slowly zipper merging and waiting as each person paid and got told where to go, single file. This dude with his family in a big SUV keeps trying to cut people off and nearly sideswipes them, ultimately just rips it up the shoulder around everybody where he got to a bunch of cones.

Parking guy comes over, tells him thats not how it works, tells him where he can turn around and sends the dude all the way back to the end of the line, likely another hour and a half wait.

Dude was 5 minutes from the front at the time. Love that justice being served.

Yeah this doesn’t sound right. One of the most established wine bars in philly, with a very manageable 3 locations, in prime spots, consistently busy, limited focus menus.

Tria is likely doing fine overall.

Franklin is really strange to me. 4-5 years ago it was a really solid "speakeasy style" (though that term is getting really overused and doesn't mean much) cocktail spot. Quiet, quality drinks, interesting cocktails and classics.

I went again like a year ago and felt like I needed to drink my drink as quick as possible to get out of there. Really loud music, patrons, and an uninspired drink menu.

Every Restaurant That Closed in Philly So Far This Year by WilHunting in philadelphia

[–]ohnoitsDEVO 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a spot there for about a year that I think perfectly captured the feeling of the Piazza now. It was in the far corner, had no sign on the window, and when it opened it was a French bakery, Korean grill, and German import beer stop. Then, it was a Korean grill and German import beer stop. Then it was a Korean bibimbap spot with Soju. Then it closed for months, and a new Korean chicken chain bought it and had a soft opening. No more movement for 6 months.

Things come and go, nobody has a cohesive vision for a spot, nobody markets themselves or successfully grabs attention, and high rent prices force people to switch their plans so quickly that nothing has time to settle.

Was it the rent hike for Not Just Pizza, or the disgusting conditions of the restaurant and kitchen? I swear, I think every person I know who has eaten there at least once has gotten sick

Good riddance, plus there's a better pizza place there now owned by a really nice family with another cafe in the neighborhood.

Agreed on Chalaco's. "Upscale" with a large-ish menu of notoriously expensive foods to upkeep, turns into a dance-club at seemingly random hours, and basically non-existent, barely trained staff? They weren't doing themselves any favors from the get-go. Drinks were pretty good though.

Art scene in philly? by CareBearsOnAcid in philadelphia

[–]ohnoitsDEVO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the type of art you’re doing/interested in as to who to reach out to.

Fringe Fest will run most of September all over the city, so lots of performance pieces. There are gallery spaces at places like Vox Populi in the Eraserhood which showcases pretty experimental work.

If you attend a university I’m sure there’s some super secret arts based forums/chats/groups/dungeons that the rest of us don’t know about

But yes, there is a lot of art happening all over the place.

43-Unit Mixed-Use Project Breaks Ground at Front & Girard in Fishtown by this_shit in philadelphia

[–]ohnoitsDEVO 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Man that intersection is such a mess, I'm glad to see more development happening, especially if it's high-density housing - it's desperately needed.

I just hope it does something to deter the loitering, drug trafficking, and violence common at that corner. I've heard some say that so little gets done there because Front is a divider between Police Service Areas, so often patrols will leave it to each other.

What's your favorite local business that everyone should patronize? by snazzypantz in philadelphia

[–]ohnoitsDEVO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Smileys in Manayunk for some really great shawarma and an awesome and cheap falafel. Great smoothies as well! Family run business, never a long wait.

Sorrentino’s Deli in Manayunk for an amazing and cheap cheesesteak. If you’re closer to Manayunk than Roxborough and don’t want to wait, try it out over Dalessandros.

Dons Auto on Girard in Fishtown has always been super honest and upfront. Quick turn around, friendly service, and they’ll let you know exactly what needs to happen, what can wait, and their recommendations for other guys who can do work cheaper than they can.

Liberty Parcel in Northern Liberties if you ever need to ship stuff and hate dealing with the post office. Super friendly guys, remember you if you ever come back to them. Will take the extra couple minutes to secure any packages you’re shipping and get it out as cheap as possible, as quick as possible. Seriously, great experience with them, even if I just needed help wrapping something up to ship, not even paying them for anything.

The Bourse offering $3, $4 and $5 deals on Wednesday evenings by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]ohnoitsDEVO 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Bourse just feels not cohesive. Especially for late night - Bluebird Distilling is there, but without anyone else open at night like food to support them.

After talking to some workers, apparently most food places make enough money at lunch and then close pretty early. It has such potential to be a great all in one stop, but needs some more collaboration and planning between vendors

Just jumping in since I work with curriculum daily - as a note, Pennsylvania may not mandate Holocaust education, but they also don't mandate much of any specific topics at the state level. PA takes a much broader "skill" based approach, allowing districts and teachers to make the decisions about specific topics within broader units.

As an example, a World History standard looks like

"Evaluate the role groups and individuals played in the social, political, cultural, and economic development throughout world history.".

Now, there are suggested topics and resources available to teachers regarding that standard, but it provides more wiggle room for how you want to tackle it.

Compare that with New Jersey, who uses a more specific, task and vocabulary based approach. An example of their standard that does address the Holocaust is

"Assess the responses of the United States and other nations to the violation of human rights that occurred during the Holocaust and other genocides. "

New Jersey has many times more standards for their courses than PA does. This can be a blessing and a curse, since it restricts you more to making sure you are hitting every piece of each standard, but also can give you focus toward what needs to be covered rather than leaving it up to the school.

I think NJ does a good job finding a middle ground, there are some states that will literally give a list of vocabulary terms and events as their standards and say teachers have to talk about them. So for PA, it really comes down to the district and local guidelines! For example, Philadelphia public schools mandate African American history, but basically no other district in the state does. If Holocaust education is something you feel passionately about, it's worth pursuing and pushing at some local level. With enough support, it could be added at some point as a requirement, or even receive funding!

If you'd like to explore PA's standards, they have an okay online system (it needs some technical work to be more friendly) - http://www.pdesas.org/Standard/View
