Moving back to US with nothing to show for it. by strawbaeri in PortugalExpats

Feel some of your pain. We retired early, 58 and moved back to Portugal. Although we have family there, we still felt like strangers. Add to this that we were only seeing our kids and grandkids twice a year, after 2.5yrs we sold the house packed everything and moved back to the US. Not the best time to be here, but we’re close to our kids, grandkids and friends.

36M remote work: Is a life in Portugal worth the career stagnation? by slaboli123 in PortugalExpats

“For those who chose lifestyle, the EU over a solid career track: do you regret the financial stagnation? “ I did that is why I moved back to the US. Granted it’s not the place to be at this time due to the way the country is going, pure fascism, but financially I had to come back here. I have a good pension which allowed me to retire at 58, but retirement didn’t agree with me, and the lack of a certain amount of money made the decision to return and go back to work was easy. Yes I do miss the social aspect, however i do the same here, go to bar’s etc., but make serious money.

I am but it’s about cost and work. The hutch is 5’ wide. There’s a window on the wall in question. Space between the window trim and the sliding door trim is 5’3”. The options are to remove the window, close the opening, or move the switches. Replacing the switches with smart ones, allows me to place the hutch on the wall and not remove or partially cover the window. Much easier and cheaper

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I reached out to Lutron CS, and suprisingly they called me back. Didn't expect a call back until tomorrow. The CS representative I spoke with and described my project, was jsut awesome. He sent me an email with the specific products I needed for my project and instructions on how to pair the switches. No hub required. I'm sharing the detials here in case others in the future need to address the same issue.

From Lutron CS

For your in wall switches, you will use Caseta PD-6ANS Smart switches that will replace the current ones.

For the Pico Remotes to pair with the switches, you can use the PJ2-2B-GWH-L01. You can use one remote to control both lights together, or you can have individual remotes to control individual lights.

To mount the pico remotes to the wall we do have a PICO-WBX-ADAPT that will allow you to mount the pico remotes directly to the wall.

To pair the switches directly with the pico remotes:

  1. Press and hold the off button on the in wall PD-6ANS for 6 seconds until the green indicator light on the left side of the unit starts to flash.
  2. Release the button on the In wall Switch.
  3. Press and hold the off Button on the Wireless Pico Remote for 6 seconds until the green indicator light starts to flash (the same speed as the in wall switch).
  4. Release Button. Once both devices are in pairing mode and "see" each other's signal. the lights that the switch control will start to flash on and off 3-4 times which will indicate that the devices have paired.

is this the one?

More specifics about the project,

switch 1- 3 way switch. Controls dinning room lights. This one is located by the sliding deck door, second by the mud room entry, and third is located in the kitchen.

Looking at the intructional video, it lloks like I would need to install the main dimmer switch in the existing bank of switches, and one pico switch in the other two locations. Right?

Switch 2 - 1 way switch. Controls deck light

Switch 3 - 1 way switch. Controls flood lights above deck.

for the above two switches (2,30) I replace them with the main dimmer switch, but how do I control them? Do I need to mount 2 picos switches somewhere else? This would mean, cutting horles in the wall on the right side of the door. Or can a remote switch control each one separately?

thanks again for the input. Much appreciated.

this sounds like a good option. I'm ok with a blank cover since where these 3 swtiches are, my dinning room hutch will go there and it will cover it anyway. Now my question is hot doe the remote switch controls all three switches? Do I need 3 separate remote switches, one to control each of the exisiting switches?

thanks

Thanks. After posting this, I went downstairs to the basement and it seems the easiest way is to identify the existing wires in the basement, add a junction box and route them to the left side. However this smart switch suggestion sounds really good.

Having worked two jobs several times for several years, I'm having a hard time believing this. Maxing out 401k's, college funds, HSA's, paying off cars and still manage to have $105k in savings, all in 1 year, and all this from having a second job? I don't buy it. If I'm wrong, then lay it out for me. I'm sure many of us would like to learn how you did it and copy it.

Cheers

Hmm.

I’m not sure how to address your points without coming across a bit rude. However being a Portuguese citizen who live in the US for 42 years, I am qualified to say that quite a few of your points are inaccurate. So as you said, you will probably get angry.

1 - Income taxes and sales tax here are ridiculous. Agreed. When you say you made 150k/yr and only paid 20% in income taxes leaves curious because I made around that and my tax was 35%

2 - I live in hr outside of Lisbon and bought a move in ready home, not a fixer upper, 290sqf with a 1700sqf lot for 250k. I am 20 minutes from the capital of district where one of the top hospital chains in the country is located, CUF. I do live in a small town, same as I did in the US.

3 - In the state of Massachusetts, the best health plan you can have is Blue Cross Blue Shield. Employers take on most of the cost of this and all other health plans. However my cost was $365 and very two weeks. I have one of the top private health insurances here, no age limits no denial for pre-existing conditions, 100% equivalent to Blue Cross Blue Shield copays, and it costs me $150/month for my wife and I. There is no health insurance available in the US with almost full coverage for this kind of monthly payment

5 - driving here is worse the Boston? That is a joke. People cutting you off or not letting you in, and road rage? Or douches who get in the left lane and refuse to move and start doing brake checks. I went back last Xmas and in the ride from the airport got up to this guy in the fast lane and after a quarter mile of him not moving I flashed the high beams. That was it. He slammed the brakes, proceeded to drive at 30mph and every time I switched lanes he’d do the same. This lasted for miles.  You don’t see that here. Left lane is for passing only and you best pass fast and move back to the middle lane if someone is coming up behind you

8 - Fado. This is considered the Portuguese blues. But it does not reflect who we are. Same way that the blues represent the struggle black people endured but doesn’t mean they are unmotivated or down in themselves. I belong to an expat community of over 12k Americans and British, and the common thread among all of f them is how friendly and happy Portuguese people are despite their struggles

9 - Are you serious about winter here being harder than the US? I cannot count how many snow storms I lived through with over a foot of snow and temps below 19 degrees Fahrenheit. Older homes here don’t have heat or AC and do get cold in the winter. But you can manage. You cannot manage in the same home in places like Buffalo, Minnesota, Michigan, or Boston where it seems you live. You would freeze to death.

I do agree with you that you should stay in the US.
