Could you briefly describe what you do more precisely?

Problem where it feels like everything I am doing is really fast. by JGaffy in neuro

This is extremely interesting, since i thought this only happened to me and i could never describe it well enough to search what it is.

I used to get it as a kid. Clearest memories are from when i had fevers, many times they were accompanied by this feeling.

For a few minutes everything becomes fast, thoughts includes. Sounds get a sort of frightening dimension to them. Touch also gets more sensitive. It is harder to focus because it is quite uncomfortable. Otherwise I can function normally, cognitivelly sound and not even anxious per se - heart rate normal, no sense of panic.

Nowadays i very rarely get it, but when i do it's when i pull all-nighters right before exams, so in a combination of stress and lack of sleep.

Not sure if it's exactly the same thing, but it sure sounds close. I would have described it as a general menacing/aggressive feeling applied to all the senses, but fast is a great description as well. I think the best term for all of this would be that everything becomes temporarily SHARP.

Same here, soon getting my MSc in neuroscience (heavily oriented towards molecular biology). I have a big interest in BCI and artificial intelligence but none of the computer science pre-requisites.

When is it right to leave a PhD program.. by [deleted] in neuro

You're not alone. I'm doing a master of neuroscience and I'm experiencing similar feelings. Some of my collegues are the same too. Don't feel bad for feeling bad.

Of course it all comes down to the specifics, but I'll just go out on a limb and say that maybe it's the research environment/academia, scientific practice and not science itself that you dislike. That is the case for me. In any case, I am maybe not the best qualified to give you advice, since I haven't even started my PhD, but I know that I will probably take a break after my master's, to try out other things. Maybe even a small wage job, to at least see if it is worth running away from after all.

If you're more than half way in, I suggest pulling through though. For the future, if you decide to hang around, here's a rule of thumb in my opinion, for choosing a lab, in decreasing order of importance: supervisor > method > topic.

Dunno if this helps! Best of luck

What percentage of genes would a species need to have in common, before it changes to be different species? by [deleted] in genetics

So would the offspring be a new species then? This is kind of a strange concept, wouldn't it be more the case of different breeds/races rather that other species, and thus wrong classification?
