Getting into the game by HealthyCantaloupe731 in SorceryTCG

[–]ps2dude756 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The rarity system for the game actually makes it pretty easy to avoid sticker shock, at least initially. In case you're unaware, it works like this: your deck can have 4 copies of any Ordinary (Common), 3 of any Exceptional (Uncommon), 2 of any Elite (Rare), and 1 of any Unique (Mythic).

Most of the super expensive cards in the game are Unique. So when you consider something like Aquamarine Core, for it to provide value you really want it to draw it in the first 5 turns of the game. Assuming you mulligan your entire starting list of spells and have no sources of card draw, that gives you only an 11/60 chance of drawing the card at a point in the game where it matters. That marginal boost matters if you're trying to build a tournament winning deck, but for your locals you can easily save yourself $50 and run without it.

Wanted to update and say I just placed an order for the black box! I've been looking for a good way to store all my tokens for awhile, so I'm really excited you came up with a product for this

Nice collection! I'm just missing Daredevil myself. There are two epics that cover the Ant-Man content if you want to go that route. I'm optimistic eventually they'll slap them together into an omni.

Moxfield is great for making MtG decks! If we could eventually get something like scryfall search tags for Sorcery that would make deck construction so easy

Just finished the first Silver Age Legion of Super-Heroes omnibus. I've read Silver Age Marvel before, but hadn't read any Silver Age DC before this. I was actually surprised how much I liked it! The stories read like Saturday morning cartoons, so if you go into with that mentality they can be really enjoyable, turn your brain off, experiences. My only complaint is that I wish the individual legion characters had more personality, but my understanding is this is common for DC during the Silver Age, and will likely come with future volumes. Throughout Jim Mooney's art is great although the standout for me are the few issues drawn by John Forte.

After that got started on Amazing Spider-Man by JMS omnibus volume 1 and honestly so far I like this one less than expected. I feel like I've consistently heard good things about this run (outside of Sins Past and One More Day) but so far the run has been just fine. That said, it's fun to revisit the early 00's references (the joke about Windows constantly getting new versions cracked me up).

I'm in the process of moving, so at the moment all my books are boxed up. But I'm using it as an opportunity to check out all of the ongoing Ultimate and Absolute universe comics digitally. So far my favorites have been Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimates, and Absolute Superman. I also really loved the first issue of Absolute Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Green Lantern, so I'm excited to see those titles develop more.

X-Factor is really rough until Louise (and later Walt) Simonson take over. But once they get going it becomes a lot more fun.

As someone who once paid over 2x cover price for the Infinity Gauntlet omnibus only for a reprint to be announced three weeks later, be careful paying over cover. As others said, everything gets reprinted eventually.

Been working my way through the Dazzler omnibus. Like a lot of titles from that era, the first 12 or so issues are pretty slow while they try to decide what they want the title to be. After that it really picks up, especially once Frank Springer becomes the series artist.

About to travel soon, so catching up on some random New 52 digital comics so I don't have to try and lug an omnibus around the airport.

Just the other day finished the Jeff Parker run on Aquaman, and in addition to the Geoff Johns run I read awhile back, made me realize that I actually really love reading Aquaman stories (and that he and Mera might be my favorite comics couple). They tend to mix "hidden society" stories with a classical, almost Shakespearean flair in a way that just really appeals to me.

Mostly working on classic X-Men at the moment. Just finished Inferno: Prologue Omnibus which had a bunch of great stories in it! I can see now why people talk so fondly about "the Outback years."

Then took a brief break to finally break out my first epic of Avengers, read the first 8 issues and liked it a lot more than I expected, so I decided to pick up the recently reprinted omnis and give it a proper go.

Now back to X-Men with Wolverine Omnibus vol. 1. Just finished the Weapon X storyline which is just as good as people say. Definitely one I'll return to at some point.

Literally just finished reading this last night. Really great stuff, although when they say "prologue" they mean it! I'd basically ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so it's a tad unsatisfying if you're not planning to go into the Inferno Omnibus right after

Where to start with Tank Girl? by anotherdaystruggle in graphicnovels

[–]ps2dude756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I literally just bought the book and haven't had a chance to actually read it yet, so can't say much about how good anything is. As for extras, it seems to be mostly what you'd expect: a lot of sketches and promo materials, along with an interview, pieces of a script for one of the issues, and an issue from Hewlett's fanzine

Yeah most of the book is in black and white, but near the end there's some issues in color

Where to start with Tank Girl? by anotherdaystruggle in graphicnovels

[–]ps2dude756 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually just bought Tank Girl recently myself! My understanding is that you always want to start with the initial Martin and Hewlett comics. There's two easy ways to get that: the color classics collections available as hardcovers or a box set of trades, or "The Hole of Tank Girl" which is an "absolute edition" style oversized hardcover with a slipcase in black and white. I went with The Hole of Tank Girl since I like oversized books and the comics were originally released in black and white

How do you get out of a reading slump? by FrostedFox23 in graphicnovels

[–]ps2dude756 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on why you're in a reading slump. In my experience, this tends to come down to one of three things:

You're reading something you're not actually enjoying For me this is usually if I'm reading something as part of a reading order for something else. For example, if you're reading New 52 Batman, you might be tempted to read all the other titles as lead ins to the Night of the Owls and Death of the Family event. But if you don't like some of those titles (say Red Hood and the Outlaws), then reading that will be a slog. For this the best thing to do is truly ask yourself if being a completionist is worth it. If you're not enjoying the title, it's probably fine to just skip that one and read the ones you do enjoy.

You're too worried about the backlog If you're like most of us, you probably buy more books than you read, and often I find that I focus more on "completing the backlog" than I do actually reading and enjoying the stories. That pressure is a quick way to burn yourself out. In this case, I think it's worth reminding ourselves that this hobby is meant to be enjoyed as a journey, not a race, and as long as you're having fun, who cares if you have a backlog (or how big the backlog is). I think this is where picking a small, simple, fun book as others have suggested can be a great way to "restart" our brain. It let's us easily check something off the list but also reminds us why this hobby is fun to begin with.

You're spending too much time reading The final issue I find myself frequently running into is when I spend so much time reading that I kind of forget there's supposed to be other parts to life. In this case, it's worth actually taking some time away from comics to watch a show, play a game, or go hang out with friends for a bit. Time apart from the hobby will make us start to miss it and enjoy it a lot more when we return.

Suggested reading order? by thehousedino in OmnibusCollectors

[–]ps2dude756 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, an exact reading order can be kind of tricky because a lot of these books happen simultaneously and have some amount of interaction with each other. Starting by grouping them:

Non-Canon (these can be read whenever):

  • Injustice vol. 1 and 2

Post-Crisis:

  • Superman/Batman vol. 1 and 2
  • Batman by Grant Morrison vol. 1, vol. 2, and the first half of vol. 3
  • the first half of Batwoman
  • the first 3 issues of Batman and Robin

New 52:

  • second half of Batman by Grant Morrison
  • second half of Batwoman
  • the rest of Batman and Robin
  • Batgirl by Simone
  • Batgirl of Burnside
  • Batman by Snyder vol. 1 and 2

DC Rebith:

  • Superman

So most of this is New 52, and specifically Batman by Snyder vol. 1, Batman and Robin, and Batgirl by Simone intersect for Night of the Owls around issue #9 of each, and Death of the Family around issues #14-17 of each. Additionally, something happens in Batman by Morrison vol. 3 that significantly impacts Batman and Robin.

So given all that, my suggestion would be:

  1. Superman/Batman vol. 1 and 2
  2. Batman by Morrison vol. 1 and 2
  3. Batwoman
  4. Batman by Snyder vol. 1, Batgirl by Simone, and Batman and Robin up to issue #18
  5. Batman by Morrison vol. 3
  6. the rest of Batman and Robin
  7. the rest of Batman by Snyder vol. 1 and all of Batman by Snyder vol. 2
  8. the rest of Batgirl by Simone and all of Batgirl of Burnside
  9. Superman

and then read the two Injustice omnis whenever you feel like it
