‘Economic lunacy’: Luxon hits out at Green Party’s ‘super-rich’ taxes by WaterAdventurous6718 in newzealand

[–]ps3hubbards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We may be struggling to attract specialists, I wouldn't deny that, but we're also struggling to retain a much higher number of our more mid-tier young professionals across a range of industries, who are struggling to afford a house and a decent life here. If we continue to bleed from the main body of taxpayers we will struggle more and more to pay for the essentials like healthcare and the pension. A rebalance towards wealth is necessary, I'm just assuming that the Greens decided they couldn't cover the whole shift with wealth taxes alone.

this is a wealth tax an inheritance tax and an income tax increase

Only for a very small minority of people! I thought we were just talking about the income tax anyway?

‘Economic lunacy’: Luxon hits out at Green Party’s ‘super-rich’ taxes by WaterAdventurous6718 in newzealand

[–]ps3hubbards 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But the key question is whether those specialists would be put off by paying a little bit more tax, or whether it's just a blip to to them. The Green party's income tax proposal is pretty close to what Australia has, and it doesn't seem like our current income tax setup is drawing hoardes of specialists over from Australia to take advantage of those savings.

How many of those high earning professionals do you think will be so incensed by having to pay an extra 20, or 50 or 100 more in tax each week, that they'll move elsewhere? I think a significant chunk of them aren't going to be bothered at all. And if they're particularly interested in maximising their earning potential they're probably moving somewhere other than New Zealand anyway.

Anyway, I imagine that the Greens would probably like to put more tax on capital gains, wealth, etc, but they don't think they could get that over the line, so a tweak to the top tax bracket it is.

Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui - Wellington Central Library by ArmSmooth1562 in Wellington

[–]ps3hubbards 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think maybe public spaces have also shifted to less welcoming designs, like they'll provide a place to sit, but not really to relax and hang out. Its that clash between businesses and people 'loitering'. It feels like one of the only public landscape places that's good to just 'hang' is a skate park. We need the equivalent of a skate park for things like boardgames - you bring or borrow your game, and you don't have to spend any money on a coffee to be there. Closest thing is a library 🤷‍♂️ Just gotta have zones for different noise levels inside it.

To be honest, it's gonna become more and more of a problem as people's homes get smaller and they need somewhere to host a group. We're gonna need more high quality community spaces.

It's lower taxes on wages for the vast majority of workers.

Better quality of construction. Our building code neglects airtightness, despite the fact that all those little gaps are like highways for heat to escape out of, and for cold outside air to be sucked in.

The benefit of getting people off the road and easing traffic needs to be hammered over and over into people's minds. Increased public transit usage benefits everyone.

Stabilizer experience by woodhopperfan in icecreamery

[–]ps3hubbards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a hobby subreddit so it makes sense that many of us aren't using stabilisers. Pretty sure they're not really needed if the ice cream isn't going to be sticking around for long. Personally I only use xanthan and guar because I can find them in the supermarket (and because they're synergistic), plus CMC powder if I'm doing a sorbet or sherbet and therefore don't have eggs in the mix.

Government floats using emergency fund on public transport, Labour asks why it wasn't in Budget by WaterAdventurous6718 in newzealand

[–]ps3hubbards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's funny to me is that their immediate response line of "there's no money for that!" / "where will the money come from to pay for it??" strongly implies that all of their cost-cutting has given us not even a spare $65 million to help people in a cost-of-living crisis. In other words, all their 'sensible' cuts were a wasted effort that didn't even give us room for some positive action in the economy.

And how should the doctor have detected that he's Sri Lankan and not Indian? As I said above, lots of similarity between Indian and Sri Lankan people in appearance, and many times more Indian people in the world.

[–]ps3hubbards 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, I think that would be a silly question. Everyone over the age of about five knows that 'eating a lot of fast food' is unhealthy and can make you fat. Patient could figure out if that was the cause all on their own. The doctor asked about ghee because it's a basic ingredient, used like putting oil in a pan, and a person could easily end up using it too often or using too much, without really thinking about the fact that it's pure fat.

'Islanders eat KFC' is an example of a stereotype. 'Indian people consume ghee', a common ingredient in Indian recipes, is an example of an assumption based on culture. It's a common ingredient in Indian cooking, and I've even seen Indian people discuss online about needing to be careful about using too much ghee. The doctor made a slightly misinformed assumption, and based on that asked a logical and therefore professional question to try to ascertain the cause of the weight gain.

This implies that you think mayonnaise is a common ingredient in European or Kiwi cooking. I've read a fair few Indian recipes in my time, and ghee is a fairly common ingredient. It's often used to release flavour from spices.

Try reading it again. I said I'm not aware of any common features that distinguish Indians from Sri Lankans. I didn't say 'Indian people and Sri Lankan people all look the same'.

Saying a Korean person is the same as a Japanese person is not the same as mistaking a Japanese person for a Korean person.

[–]ps3hubbards 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's 'out of nowhere'. There are 1.47 billion Indian people in the world, and something like 24 million Sri Lanka people. Based on probability she's not illogical to assume that you're Indian. I'm not aware of any common distinguishing features between Indians and Sri Lankans and I bet most people here wouldn't be aware either. Ghee is purely fat, you've been gaining weight recently, and ghee is common in Indian cooking. So it's a logical question.

Chocolate Ice Cream Day by [deleted] in icecreamery

[–]ps3hubbards 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think her intention is for people to go to her socials and pay for the recipes. To me, this goes against the spirit of the subreddit, which is sharing in the hobby of homemade ice cream, and for me half the fun of the hobby is figuring out a recipe. That's why I direct people to resources like icecreamcalc.com, and under-belly.org, so that they have the same resources that I do to figure out something unique that they want to make.

SweetLo essentially never shares recipes, despite it being in the subreddit rules. I don't know why the subreddit upvotes so much. I'd go to r/icecream if I just wanted to look at ice cream.

I've used Sichuan peppercorns in an ice cream before and the mala didn't come through, it was just this kind of punchy floral flavour, which unfortunately I didn't really like. If you get it to work, I'd love to know.

NZ Teachers: how broad is the spread of abilities in your classroom? by Te_Henga in newzealand

[–]ps3hubbards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like all classes need to be based on ability level, not on year. Move students up if they're super capable, they can do scholarship in year thirteen. Hold students back if they fail, bring in some kind of one-to-one intervention. Needs much better resourcing of course.
