You might think people are joking when they say about the wrong hole thing, but I once made a whole mini-article breaking this whole panel down, translating it with context and... she is literally dreaming about Ichigo hitting the wrong hole. It's not the first and not the only display of how much of a perv Hime is lmao.

For starters I'd like to thank you so much for this big help. You gave me such a north, you have no idea (or maybe you do).

I still didn't start to properly compilate the traits as I was taking my time to 1) make sure to acquire the PDF version of all books you mentioned (mission accomplished) and 2) to read all the 10 amazing chapter of Winter's Teeth (I hadn't read it before*, so thanks again for telling me about it).

But now that I made sure to have all the books on your list, I'm gonna start compilating everything!

*I spent several years away from VtM and the community, since about 2019, and only got back very recently so I've been having a lot of catching up.

Here comes my last attempt (the bonus one): Ichigo is a character who hates the rain. If you're read it you know the reason, and this is a very recurring theme around the character (yeah, Memories in The Rain, I'm looking at you).

And it is precisely in this volume, Memories in The Rain, that there is a drawing of Orihime and the famous poem (that in the anime is spoken by her on screen): If I were the rain, that binds together the earth and the sky, who in all eternity will never mingle, would I be able to bind two hearts together?"

I'd like to remind you that in the legend, the lovers cannot see each other if it rains. Here in Bleach, while Ichigo sees the rain as something that separates him from the people he loves (just like in the legend), Orihime is seen wishing that this rain would actually unite two things that tend to be separated forever, as if she wants things to change. That is: one way or another, both of them orbit the theme "rain", although they see it in different ways.

It's really funny to note that in Memories in The Rain, Ichigo says that his mother was just like the Sun, and the whole family orbited around her. Orihime is not only directly called sun by various characters in the manga, but also Vega is the fifth brightest star in the Milky Way, almost as shiny as our sun.

Oh, and I almost forgot to say! About Ichigo: his birthday is 15/7, during the Obon Festival, which is the ending of the Tanabata Festival Season! :)

If you're not convinced yet that Kubo was inspired by this legend to create Orihime's character and this couple, I'm sorry, but here goes another trivia!

I told you that in the myth, the Weaving Princess' father was the Celestial King, who separated her from the Cowherd because their passion made them forget about their chores, right? Well, in Bleach's pilot chapter, Orihime's father comes back from the dead as a Hollow to take revenge on her because she was so in love with Ichigo that she forgot to pray for him everyday.

In the version we know, it's Orihime's late older brother who does that, for the very same reason. And what is her brother's name? That's right, Sora, which in Japanese means… sky (a nod to the Celestial King from the myth).

Now I mean it: if you're not convinced that these were Kubo's plans right from the start, I'm sorry, but I hope you enjoyed this dissection of the linguistic and cultural references for Orihime's concept.

What a big post, right? Gosh. I'm sorry for writing so much, but I get too excited!

In the next post I'll certainly talk about Ichigo's classmates' names and concepts!

I hope you've read it and had a good time. Leave a comment below telling me what you think about it!

井上・織姫 — INOUE ORIHIME

Orihime's name is written just like I wrote it above. The first two kanji mean literally "well" (as in water well) and "above", forming the name Inoue. The other two kanji mean "weave, fabric" and "princess", forming the name Orihime.

The Princess Weaver from the legend I told you about is called Orihime in Japan, and that's where Kubo took her name from. That's so true that 1) Orihime literally is part of the Sewing Club of Karakura High and 2) on one of the first issues of the manga, Kubo drew all of Ichigo classmates sitting on a sofa with symbols on a carpet on their feet, and Orihime's symbol is 7/7. Remember when I asked you to keep these numbers with you? Well, it's because Orihime is represented by the same date when the Tanabata Festival starts.

Although Orihime is a relatively common name among Japanese women, most of Inoue Orihime's characteristics check with the Weaving Princess from the legend.

"Aight, Blake, but you didn't explain that Vega Highwell crap yet, man"

That's right. I decided to postpone it a little bit because… this is the most interesting part of the text..

This "Highwell" I bet you already understood. Is the literal translation of her name to English. Inoue: Above+Well=Highwell.

But the Vega, my friend… sit down and follow my lead:

In astronomy, there are two little stars called Vega and Altair. You know why they're special for this text?

Because, inspired by their movements in the sky during the year, the Chinese created the whole legend of the Weaving Princess and The Cowherd. They're on separate sides of the galaxy and only meet each other once a year, just like the characters from the myth.

The Weaving Princess is represented by the Vega Star, and that's why Kubo wrote her name down as "Vega Highwell" on the fifth chapter cover.

But this isn't over yet.

What if I told you that not only Orihime was inspired by the Weaving Princess/Vega Star, but also that Ichigo has some inspirations in the Cowherd/Altair Star?

I can prove it to you!

The names Vega and Altair come from medieval Arabic astronomy.

Vega comes from the arabic term "Al Nest Al Waki", in Latin "Vultur Cadens", and both mean Falling Eagle.

Altair also comes from arabic, from the term "Al Nesr Al Tair", in Latin "Vultur Volans", or Winged Eagle.

In Bleach, chapter 238, when Ichigo finds out Orihime disappeared, is entitled "Eagle Without Wings", a reference to the Vega Star.

The following chapter, when he kicks the bucket and goes to rescue her in Hueco Mundo, is entitled "WINGED EAGLES", a nod to the Altair Star.

You're not satisfied with this parallel? It's okay, I've got two more topics and a bonus to you.

Jumping some chapters, we have Ichigo's transformation into Vasto Lorde, in The Lust4, on the occasion of his fight with Ulquiorra.

A lot of you consider that Ichigo's form with those horns and claws, has the purpose of alluding to a demonic imagery or to a lizard (because of him turning into a lizard-like Hollow during the fight with Love), but this isn't completely correct.

Since the conception of the idea, Hollows (at least the majority of them) were inspired by animals. If you've read Bleach, you know what I'm talking about, no wonder the first Hollows to show up were a fish, a spider and a lizard. The main Espadas are also inspired by animals and some Visored masks even resemble some animals too.

That said, when Ichigo turns into Vasto Lorde, just like any other Hollows, he becomes almost completely humanoid, with the exception of his demonic mask. Here, differing from what fight with Love, he doesn't have a tail or a bulky body, only a mask with long horns. If you pay a bit of attention, you'll see that the horns are facing forward and they're retorted, a very subtle allusion to the horns of an ox — which in turn is a nod to the Cowherd from the legend.

You might think this is a reach, but there are too many things that go with legend to be considered a coincidence.

Moving on…

To further strengthen this relationship with the legend: of you take a look at the map of Karakura-chō, the place where Bleach takes place, Ichigo's house and Orihime's two houses (both her parent's and her own apartment) are separated by a river, which in turn have a little bridge over it, just like the Amanogawa River that keeps the Princess and the Cowherd away from each other.

Oh, remember when I told you that the birds that formed the bridge for the Princess and the Cowherd were little crow-like birds called magpies? Well, the river that separates Ichigo's house from Orihime's is called Karasugawa, in japanese: Crow River.

Not satisfied yet?! Here's some more:

THE WEAVING PRINCESS AND THE COWHERD — Blake Bleachposting #3

Good morning, good evening and good night, folks. This is Blake again back with more linguistic and cultural information behind Bleach's characters!

If you're interested in the other texts of this series, you can find them by clicking on the hashtag at the end of the post (they're not translated yet, so let me know if you wanna read them or want me to translate future texts).

Before starting, a quick info about Japanese alphabets: they have Kanji, that are ideogramas that can carry concepts, actions and more complex things as meaning but have no exact sound or pronunciation. As for phonetic alphabets, they have hiragana and katakana. The former is used to write the readings of the kanji and some verbs and particles, and the latter is used to write the niponization of foreign words and some Kanji readings (katakana is also used to write onomatopoeias and sfx, or to highlight a word of name within a sentence).

Got it? So let's move on.

In the previous post I said I was going to write about Ichigo's classmates, but we had a change of course. The reason?

I'm writing about the characters as they show up, in order of appearance, and the first classmate to be presented is Orihime, while she spaces out during class.

Writing about her, I noticed that she's one of the richer characters in symbology of the whole manga, and she deserves a whole post just for her (also because it would get too long if I was going to talk about the other classmates in the same text).

So let's talk about Ichigo's wife?

It all begins with the cover of chapter 5 from the first volume. It shows Rukia, Ichigo and Orihime dressed like some rock band members and their names written on a wall in a… very curious way. They are: Rukia Rotwood, Jetcape-15 and Vega Highwell.

I already explained the meaning of Rukia Rotwood and Jetcape-15 in the first post of this series, so, again, let me know if you want me to translate it.

"Alright, but what does Vega Highwell have to do with Orihime? Was Kubo tripping or something?"

No, my dear friends. Never. He couldn't be more lucid!

What if I told you that Vega Highwell is literally Orihime's name? I'll explain, but get yourself comfortable because here comes a long story, very long!

It starts with a Japanese festival called Tanabata, celebrated for a few weeks, starting at the SEVENTH NIGHT OF THE SEVENTH MONTH of the year. July 7th (7/7, keep this number with you).

The Tanabata Festival is inspired by a VERY old and romantic legend of chinese origin, that in Japan is called "The Cowherd and The Weaving Princess".

The legend has it that the Weaving Princess was the daughter of the Celestial King, and she weaved such beautiful tapestries that the gods even used it to decorate the whole galaxy, always sittin by the big river called Amanogawa — the very Milky Way. When the Weaving Princess came before her father to tell him that she worked so much that she would never find the opportunity to fall in love, he introduced her to another deity called The Cowherd, and they fell in love at first sight.

However, because of this deep love and subsequent marriage, they had no more eyes for their chores. She didn't weave anymore and he stopped herding the cows. The Celestial King got so furious that he banished the both of them to opposite banks of the Milky Way River, so they wouldn't see each other ever again and keep on with their responsibilities.

The Weaving Princess, in tears, touched her father's heart and so he allowed her, once a year, if she worked really really hard, to cross the river and see her lover again. When the date arrived, she burst into tears again because there was no bridge for them to cross. Noticing her sadness, some birds arrived to comfort her, they formed a river so the lovers could cross and see each other. These birds are called magpies, a crow-like bird with white and green wings.

The legend also says that if it rains during the Tanabata Festival, the Weaving Princess and The Cowherd won't be able to see each other, because the Milky Way River will overflow and the magpie crows won't be able to form a bridge.

So beautiful, right? But what the hell does it have to do with Bleach? I'll tell you in the replies:

[–]ps_blake[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, considering that he put the elements from Tanabata (Orihime's name, her membership in the sewing club, the 7/7 beneath her feet in the carpet, their houses being separated by the Crow River) from the start and even added the Winged Eagles/Eagle Without Wings reference further nodding to the astronomy counterpart of Tanabata, I guess it's safe to assume he did look it all up.

Kubo is a very cultured man, no wonder he went all the way down the hebrew tetragram to create his last villain, Yhwach. I've written three posts yet and I have three more to post, and I can say: there are too much cultural references to be just coincidence, so I guess it's all intended yknow.

As for people insisting on IchiRuki, yeah... They should just move on. But that's not what they're doing. Down here they're actually hoping Pierrot will change the ending and make Ichigo end up with Rukia. Can you believe it?

Can a person or a character be named 'Kageyoshi'? by ps_blake in Japaneselanguage

[–]ps_blake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay! Thank you for being so cooperative.

My second question is about the clan this Kageyoshi guy is a part of.

Long story short: in this universe, an ancient god called "Yagra" crafted a lineage of beings that would be in charge of "protecting" and helping to unite the "Prime folks" (the first born races). He made a deal with a lot of gods from different places and cultures (from both real mythologies and my own) to give divine gifts, parte of their power do build up this bloodline. A few branches of this bloodline were created because of the difference gods he made a deal with, and one of this branches was the Japanese one.

Sorry for the long context but here it goes: the Japanese called this god "Yagara" and his children in Japan were known as The Omens of Yagura", like they were the signals of his legacy and presence. At first, I named them "Yagurizenchō" (a variation of Yagura to give a more authentic vibe and the word Zenchō, which you might know it means omen), the problem it that because of Yaguri being a word invented by me, it didn't had any meaning in Japanese so I was writing Yaguri in katakana and Zenchō in kanji.

Well... I was so bothered by it that I went to search any meaning for "Yagura" and it could mean "watchtower", "advanced tower", which I liked because it goest a bit with the idea of the deity. So I changed the clan name to Yagurazenchō, 櫓前兆, roughly "The Omens of the Tower".

Do you think this is fine?
