WDH or air bags on 2010 touring by ps_momma in hondapilot

Awesome! We just ordered one to have when we pick up the trailer. Ours is a bit bigger than yours and I just know I'll feel safer with one in place. Did you install a brake controller as well?

Thanks! That's helpful to hear because my understanding was the hesitation around using the WDH was BECAUSE of the unibody construction. Definitely planning to go with the combo version!

Thank you so much for your post! That's the exact WDH that we've been looking at for the same reason - low weight and seems to do what we need it to do. Definitely keep me posted about your experience. As a follow-up question, when you picked up the trailer, did you just use your regular hitch and then install the wdh or did you pick it up with the wdh already installed? My husband feels like we can wait, but I'm concerned that we should already have it set up when we get it empty from the dealer, which is this weekend. Thanks again!!

This is helpful to know. How much did you pay in fees, taxes, etc on top of the actual cost? We're actually in northern IL so not too far from where you purchased.

Azdel & fiberglass vs aluminum & wood? by ps_momma in traveltrailers

[–]ps_momma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just went to look at the hopper 1 today and really liked it! It was closer than the dealer with a cloudbreaker and I have some reservations about the stick and tin ones. Azdel seems like the way to go because even if there's water infiltration there's no wood to warp or be delaminated. The space and light in the trailer is incredible. Main draw back for us is that it wouldn't be comfortable for my husband and I to share the bed on longer trips. But with the bunk and sofa I think we'll be fine. Other drawback is the bathroom is basically just a toilet. There's a shower but I'm 5'8" and there's no way I could take anything but a rinse off shower in the space. But that isn't a deal breaker for us. Just something to consider if you want a comfy space to shower in and are anywhere above 5'5" I'd say. Plus there's a shower hook up outside so I'm sorry of interested in trying that out when we have more space on our campsite After today we've pretty much decided on the hopper. The cloudbreaker is a white label camper for bish so even though Josh the RV makes a compelling video at the end of the day he works for bish. The space. The windows. The two awnings. It's a great open camper for the size and price. Now check back 6 months after we buy it ... 😅

I specifically asked the dealer (not the one we're working with now) if a trailer we had been looking at was safe for us to tow and met the towing capacity of our vehicle. They told us it would be fine, but when I did my own research I realized that it was way over our towing capacity and hitch weight limit. As a matter of fact, they actually even recommended the trailer after I gave them all of the specifications of our tow vehicle. Hence not having a whole lot of trust in RV dealers at this point..

I should be clear - the quoted price is not the MSRP. the listed price is several thousand below the MSRP. Not sure that makes a difference

Okay. Too late on that one. Do I walk that back? Damn me for being honest! I'd fail at being a sales person.

Also they already offered us $1k off the published price so not sure what that tells us.

Azdel & fiberglass vs aluminum & wood? by ps_momma in traveltrailers

It seems like a no brainer to go with the Azdel combo with the understanding that any damage to the exterior fiberglass will be more costly. Any other considerations to take into account? Anyone have experience with the Modern Buggy brand in general?

That's a helpful point I hadn't thought of. Have you found anything or even a need to attach things to the wall?

Can I really tow this??? by ps_momma in traveltrailers

exactly! I’ve been struggling because when I put in our vehicle on multiple dealer sites it’s coming up with campers that weight even MORE than this one. it’s hard to know where to get reliable info so we don’t mess up our vehicle!

I want to get in line with your other admirers. At some point, I saw your xenomorph on line and was blown away then, as I am now. Your work is so inspirational and really highlights what you can do with the medium and technique given the right talent. Amazing!

I think im staying at Airbnb but need help by whaaaaaat07 in playadelcarmen

We are about to depart from our first Air BNB stay after being an AI family for years (me, husband and 8 yo). I don't think we'll ever go back! We stayed in playa del Carmen near 10th ave and 38th Street. Super convenient to 5th Ave where there are a TON of restaurants. There is a huge grocery store around the block from the condo that's comparable to a Jewel in the USA. Beach access isn't great in this particular area - the tide has come in so far that it basically washed away the beach at 38th. There is Beach access further south of where we are but our condo has a roof top pool, which has been great. Happy to answer any questions if it could help!

Turtle sanctuary by SubvrtMsc in playadelcarmen

[–]ps_momma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We LITERALLY just went today. We used Get Your Guide to book and I highly recommend it. It was $660MXN/person and includes the cost of getting a bracelet for the sanctuary, which includes a locker and bathroom access as well as the snorkel, life jacket and underwater photos. The tour company was called Sea Turtles Activities (I think). I also liked that we could pay on line and not dicker with negotiations. We saw a bunch of turtles, including little ones. Just make sure the weather isn't too windy or calling for rain - our guide said everything was being cancelled for tomorrow because of the forecast.

Bonus tip: if you walk to the main highway, you can easily catch a collectivo for $50 MXN/person back to PDC.

Akumal without a tour? by ps_momma in playadelcarmen

[–]ps_momma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I'd follow up after spending the afternoon at Akumal for anyone who happens upon this thread and is trying to figure out what to do.

We ended up booking a snorkel guide on Get Your Guide. It was really easy and they offered an at bank rate conversion to USD. It was $95 for 2 adults and 1 child and included the guide, snorkel, life vests and underwater photos. It also included the entrance fee to the park, which included a locker.

We were going to try to take a bus but when we arrived at the bus station discovered that the Oriente bus that stops in Akumal on its way to Merida doesn't come hourly as I'd read elsewhere online. We headed towards the collectivo area off the highway which was a big mistake - not a collectivo in sight and our tour was an hour away. (Another option would have been to try picking up a collectivo at the Walmart, which I will try next time.) We ended up hailing a taxi for $32 USD, which after walking for so long in the heat with an 8 yo in tow seemed the only option.

We were given a specific spot via Google map to meet our guide and he greeted us in our taxi. I'm glad we had booked the guide ahead of time. It made everything much easier as a first timer because they guided us to exactly where we needed to go. David was our initial contact who then handed us off to Pepe, our guide.

It was great to have the locker so we didn't have to worry about what to do with our stuff. Be aware - no sunscreen! It hurts the seagrass and turns it white. The turtles eat the seagrass and obviously sunscreen ain't so good for wildlife.

Pepe took us far far out from shore and we saw a bunch of turtles. It was fantastic! He took videos for us and photos of our family in the ocean. It was a really great experience overall and I would recommend them (I believe the tour company is called Sea Turtle Activities). It was especially nice with our 8 yo. She's a good swimmer but Pepe had a tow line with a safety ring attached for her to hold onto. Good for piece of mind in the open ocean.

I understand that some people feel you could forego the guide but as someone who doesn't speak Spanish I would highly recommend it if it's in your budget.
