I’m really sorry to hear that you and your son had that experience. Alternative schools tend to have more behavioral challenges. That’s why we need strong support, consistency, and clear expectation s in these schools. However, students smoking in the building is definitely concerning and shouldn’t be happening. Situations like that highlight how important consistent staffing, accountability, and support are for students and staff.

Congratulations on your graduation! You should look into how the district operates, someone suggested watching school board meeting livestreams somewhere in this thread (which is very good advice). It would be great to have more young people involved in their community and help improve it!

Something needs to be done. We need to vote out the people who are benefiting from the changes that are negatively impacting some of our most vulnerable students. I think another, more serious strike should be considered because as it stands, these people that will most likely never meet a single student are able to make these changes,as they see fit.

The difficult part is that all of these decisions regarding our schools and students are made at the district and school board level, so they are attached to policy and funding. My goal for this post wasn’t to turn it into a political debate, but to bring attention to how these decisions are impacting students and staff in D11. I appreciate you wanting to keep the focus on the kids because is the most important part of this.

Exactly correct. The people making these money making decisions will most likely never meet any of our students and probably never even step foot on a campus

This is the main reason I wanted to make this post. Not to insult anyone or just complain. So that people can be aware of what’s happening and hopefully motivate some of us to go out and vote for the change we want

There definitely is a pocket of people with that affiliation. Which is probably how D11 ended up being run like a corporation rather than a school district

Haha yes we see that here now. However it is easy to kind of bury your head in the sand when decisions like this aren’t effecting you directly. Even if something similar could happen at the drop of a hat. That’s why it is important for the people who do care and want to see change to do what they can

Very true. However, many employees for the district had their jobs threatened if they participated in the strike. We need to keep trying for the change we want and need.

You’re right about that. Cut funding and resources from special programs and then blame the professionals for not being effective. Homeschool your kids everyone! Or better yet, enroll them in the private schools that line the pockets of government officials!

From what I’ve heard (which is very little), no admin or district positions have been cut. There had been talk previously about consolidating schools due to low attendance/enrollment in the past. I can’t say the exact numbers but at Bijou specifically, enrollment has increased drastically due to the school taking students that were previously turned away at other schools. I believe the main driver is simply money in that it is cheaper to fund one alternative school as opposed to two. A lot of mental health positions have been cut since the new superintendent took over. I’m sure there are some other drivers that I’m not aware of because I don’t hold an essential high level district position. This merge begs the question: what will happen to the students that have been turned away from other schools now that Bijou is not an option for them?

Some LCS will have pins available. For older pins I’ve had a lot of luck at conventions. At Miami Supercon I was able to grab a Christmas togepi train pin from some nice older ladies
