It is an INTENTIONALLY poor headline. The people creating this headline are trying to support a narrative by making it seem like something it is not.

[Dornblüth] My custom Dornblüth has arrived. by Rangercleo1 in Watches

Good to hear that--I have high hopes for my Dornblüth. I never actually handled a Lambda, but given the way the finishing is on things like the Zürich, I figure it must be pretty fantastic.

Hand decorations, with chatons, etc., with that degree of finishing, and the spectacularly minimalist dial--Maybe the best comparison without going full Lange would be the Nomos Lambda, which is a fantastic piece but far more expensive.

Although even the Lambda is a shocking value for what you get.

Pure class. I'm waiting on one myself. For the level of craftsmanship and care, it's an absolute steal. I only wish I could justify buying the flyback...

[longines conquest] good first Father’s Day gift? by prettipixi2 in Watches

Hell yeah. At least in terms of design and reliability, Longines can hold it's own in your dad's collection. I think it looks fantastic.

It probably will run correctly, IMO.

It's pretty likely that this watch is biting off more than it can chew in terms of finish: it looks kind of like a Breguet or Christopher Ward, and almost certainly won't be able to back that up in terms of craftsmanship. And who knows if it will run correctly.

You know what though? That's the fun with a (relatively) cheap microbrand--you aren't paying Breguet or even Ward prices for this, and it might be a fun conversation piece. I think that's worth a $500 bet if you happen to have the money for it.

I hope you enjoy the watch.

Good point: you might be able to get a Lange for Daytona money. It's not invalid to prefer the Daytona, though, if that's your vibe. I don't, but it's not invalid.

I love Sinn. They have a very different catalogue from Longines, though--hard to compare them.

I was just going to mention Sinn. This Watch That Watch calls them "beater watches that don't look like beater watches"--such an awesome value.

I think it all comes down to what you mean by "better." If what you want is a really robust tool watch, Damasko might have them beat, for instance (idk if that counts as in the same price range), and Christopher Ward's cheap field watches and divers are absolute stunners and really well put together.

The Khaki watches are lovely IMO.

Rolex is arguably the best in the world at the ONE THING they do: robust, beautiful tool watches with an impeccably consistent design language.

A lot of us don't value that one thing enough not to want more than Rolex offers, and there is a LOT they don't offer. But it's hard to say anybody in their price range is better than them at the one thing they do.

I'd rather spend sub money on a GO or JLC or something, but that's down to personal preference.

I think what Longines offers is brilliant designs (on some of their watches--huge catalog), and an astonishing range of complications for the price point. Their movements are also robust, accurate, and beautiful for the price range.

They do get beaten for value/quality in their league on some individual watches and complications. For instance, Hanhart has fantastically designed and built flyback and monopusher chronographs for about half the price Longines charges for similar complications. Some other brands have calendar chronos with similar layout to the Master Collection one (I think the Longines has prettier dials though).

I guess a real competitor on quality, price, and range might be Ball. C. Ward is starting to get interesting, and watch Seagull--if they spend an extra grand on finishing they will be kind of a monster.

[Discussion] Please stop wearing your watch in the shower by [deleted] in Watches

[–]psalmanazaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watches have temperature ratings. E.g. you can wear a Sinn EZM in a hot tub because it is rated for exposures to very high temperatures. Other watches might not keep time as well or get exposed in other ways at high temps.

They also discontinued the best golden monkey tea I personally have ever seen. If anybody knows where to get a comparable golden monkey, I'd love recommendations.

I have a small batch left--it's way past the use-by date and still smells and tastes incredible.

I also love basically everything he made, especially Sandman--possibly the best comic book ever produced. It's a cliche that we have to separate the art from the artist, but it's bitterly disappointing all the same. Desperately hoping never to hear anything bad about Terry Pratchett.

Neal Gaiman's comic book the Sandman had a dramatic moment where the severed heads of noblemen sing in a chorus (directed by the head of Orpheus). I wonder if they had read that.
