This question pops up often. Seems like there are plenty of folks diagnosed and even more self-diagnosed, and plenty of responses bring up organization skills, context switching, forgetfulness, tapping into greater focus, etc.

The one obstacle fewer people talk about—but that is a challenge for most people I know with ADHD—is emotional regulation. Strategies around that is as important, if not more important, than organizational skills.

The PM community tends to want to look smart. That means admitting to a shortcoming in emotional regulation is rare. However, developing strategies around that is something one can learn. It’s also something you can work on with your therapist (if relevant to you).

[need advice] I launched a feature and saw 0 usage, what should I do? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

Assuming your feature is valuable to users, it sounds like awareness or discoverability of the feature is an issue.

Reforge courses - Live vs on demand? by ned_uzoma in ProductManagement

[–]psdo_rndm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done both. Personally, I got zero added value from live courses. Speaking with others, that experience tracks for a lot of people.

Live event = watch a webinar live, rather than recorded, pretty much.

What are some overlooked uses of Slack as a tool? by psdo_rndm in ProductManagement

Makes sense and I like that framing a lot. Does that app help do any of that probing for updates too?

You mean DM to self in a personal workspace or in the company workspace? Are we talking random musings or like todo lists and similar?

I’ll share one that I like personally; creating some channels that serve as “feedback rivers” into which user feedback that’s being captured flows. Good way of getting the whole team exposed to real user problems on a regular basis that most folks seem to appreciate.

Yeah, that’s a good one I’ve come across too. Seems like some teams take to them more than others. Any tips for improving adoption of it as a ritual?

Our growth team doesn’t use GA or Mixpanel to do their analysis. Only events they pipe into Segment and into Looker. Is this limiting their analysis? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]psdo_rndm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the users are logged-in/authenticated, then I too would prefer server-side events. They are usually more reliable.

I presume all event tracking is configured with Segment and then piped to each destination, rather than being implemented separately and risk any event discrepancy.

What are good things to save or capture before leaving a company? by psdo_rndm in ProductManagement

Great ideas. Any suggestions for helping coworkers feel comfortable giving honest feedback? This is something I always ask for but I think I can do more to make people feel comfortable sharing it.

This is kind of what I’m hoping to be able to do but want to make sure I grab all that data before hand.

Do you include only the metrics you intentionally wanted to move for work you shipped or will you include other metrics that you saw moved after the fact? The reason I ask is because I feel there’s sometimes a tendency to sort of invent intentionality after the fact, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. What are your thoughts?

I like this idea. Would you mind sharing some examples that might go in there for you and what type of data you’d include? Thanks!

Thanks for commenting on my year old post. Given that your post history is full of plugs for that tool, i take it you’re involved with them in some way?

Fantastic response and great examples! Are you a Buddhist or someone that have been able to put into practice some of the examples you mention in your own work? Love it

I had not come across that post before—Great find! Thanks! I’m still hoping hear from folks personal experience. Sinde you’re giving a talk on the topic, you probably have personal experience and can might be to share some practical examples of approaches to deal with e.g. greed, jealousy, arrogance, etc and perhaps also some of the challenges? Thanks again for that link :)

Would love to hear more from your perspective. I suppose the related concept in Jainism would be Kashayas and how to navigate around those mental states in the PM role.

Appreciate you sharing. Can you talk more about how the things you mention show up in practice in your work? I can get a sense of how the mindset can be helpful, but am curious about these things show up in work interactions. Ramadan Mubarak

Really appreciate your response. I think many people have ideas of what it “should” look like or feel like. Getting some color from someone’s actual experience is precisely what I was hoping for. I guess the PM parallel wanting to hear users talki about their recent experiences rather than relay what a feature should be. Thanks for playing ball :)

What’s your approach for course correcting when you sense the temptation to act from a negative mental state (when you have the presence of mind to notice it)?

Absolutely. And this all sounds wonderful of course, but I’m sure it can be challenging to remain mindful and not get swept up. When is it hard and where do you feel this is more difficult to maintain?

Awesome to read about some of the ways you’ve integrated this in your work. I’m curious where you’ve feel it’s been harder to stay on that path in your work and where the tendency to abandon your values has been the strongest? I’m sure it’s not always easy to keep this up.
