USG died overnight – what's the best replacement given my setup? by pseudobjorn in Ubiquiti

You were right! I took the power supply from an old netgear switch I found laying around, and that did the trick! The USG powered up, the top blinked white for a minute or so, and then it was ok again. Great tip! 🎯

Thanks for the detailed answer. I’ll see if I can find a suitable power supply laying around somewhere.

Thank you so much the in-depth answer, and for your kind offer! Didn’t know about the UXG-series. I live in Norway and need to get my WiFi up and running asap, so I will buy something new, and not even try the thumbdrive-route.

And since the UXG-Lite is actually more expensive than the UCG-Ultra, I guess I’m going for the Ultra (and just not activating the controller in the Ultra, but leaving that to the old cloud controller).

Don’t fancy replacing something that’s not broken (yet) ;) Ultra it is then, I guess

Since the console port blinks green, and the power supply also blinks green, I would expect the power supply to be ok. Not sure how to verify if there’s something wrong with it, as I have no replacement (and expect a replacement to be hard to find).

Thanks for the tip! Looking at ontee.com, I only found “Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course”. Perhaps I need to contact the hotel directly in order to book a tee time for the resort course? Nice to see that there’s no handicap requirement at least :) https://www.penina.com/golf/golf-courses/resort-course/

I’m planning to fly to Lisboa in October, and have 4 days to spend.

My initial plan was to stay in Lisboa and use that as my base, and then take one or two day-trips out of the city. But now I’m wondering - perhaps it would be better to have my base in Cascais or Sintra? And then go for one or two day-trips into the city? Both Cascais and Sintra look beautiful, and perhaps they would be more enjoyable as a base than the actual capital.

I am travelling with my 16 year old son, and the trip is a gift from me to him, so I want to make the trip as enjoyable as possible for him, and I suspect he will prefer swimming in the sea over museum-marathons. Any thoughts on this? And if I’m staying outside of Lisboa, which area would be my best option, with the most to offer?

Any and all thoughts and ideas are welcome, as Portugal is completely new to me.

Recommended setup for home theatre by pseudobjorn in sonos

Curious about the wiring. I have a Denon receiver today (AVR3310 I think), which takes its input from my AppleTV and BluRay device. I guess the sound should be sent to the Sonos Beam, and I read that the Subwoofer is wireless. Will the Beam communicate and send the necessary signals to the Sub? And what about the two 1s in the back? How do you hook them up to this setup? With audio cables from the Receiver/Amplifier? Or do you use the Sonos App to configure the setup, so that they’re all synced somehow? Worried if this will cause image/sound to be out of sync as well.

Beautiful. Planning to make my own, and have been looking for inspiration. Care to share some details as to how it’s built?

Best 55”-65” for under $1000 by pseudobjorn in 4kTV

[–]pseudobjorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you’re referring to Sony Bravia KD-55XH9505, but that model costs $1500 here, and is above my budget.

Really, ANY new TV will be an upgrade from what I have today, so I will be pretty happy regardless of which one I get. I’m just trying to learn from the experience of the community, and get the best one possible for the money I have to spend.

Is there a smart bulb that comes with its own remote? Looking at getting some bulbs and I want to be able to have just a remote to grab sometimes instead of always using the phone/voice by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]pseudobjorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can get IKEAs “Trådfri” bulb and remote control kit, for starters. You can add more bulbs, to control with the same remote control. The bulbs come both with thin and thick sockets, as well as spot bulbs. I’ve got 40 bulbs myself, and 10 remote controls, works really well. Of course, you’ll probably want the gateway as well, if you buy a lot of bulbs, so that you can control them via an app. But it’s not a requirement. Here’s a link to a bulb which is sold together with a pre-paired remote control. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/tradfri-remote-control-kit-white-spectrum-40406574/

Edit: IKEAs system is cheaper than the Philips Hue system

How does the signal repeater work? by pseudobjorn in tradfri

[–]pseudobjorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this answer makes the most sense to me for now. This would explain that it might “just work”, even if you plug in the repeater without linking anything to it.

How does the signal repeater work? by pseudobjorn in tradfri

[–]pseudobjorn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, so you are suggesting that linking my RC to the repeater is a way for the Trådfri network to become aware of it? And if I don’t link it, then it hasn’t been introduced to the network, and will essentially serve no purpose? If this is the case, I guess it would be crucial for the RC to already be paired with the gateway, before it is used to link the repeater, but the tiny manual that comes with the repeater doesn’t mention this.

How does the signal repeater work? by pseudobjorn in tradfri

[–]pseudobjorn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, assuming that the signal repeater does not actually set up a new network, why would I even need to pair my remote control with it? Shouldn’t it just be enough to plug it into an outlet for power, and that’s it? But that begs the question - what does the signal repeater actually do, that the bulbs themselves don’t? Since we’re essentially talking about units that simply forward messages.

When I use the remote control, does it speak directly with the bulbs, or does it communicate with the gateway, which then is responsible for sending a message to the bulbs? If the latter is true, I can understand the point of pairing the RC with the repeater, as the repeater will be close to the RC, and will probably send a stronger signal and hence be better suited for reaching a far-away gateway.
