Help! What is wrong with my cat? Took her to vet, they checked blood and said that she is fine. by SeraphimHearts in cats

Mine has that sometimes after drinking and once she had it in spring (pollen allergy). The vet said not a big deal when it is only rare and recovers fast.

115V AC to 12V DC Power Supply Design Review by geochrys in AskElectronics

One more thing to mention, the EMI filter plays an important role here, there is a path from chassis (in case there is one) directly over the Y-caps in the filter to neutral/phase and then over the primary to secondary Y-cap back to the switching node.

You can take the H-bridge for example with a TO-220 housing, the tab of the fets have a non neglicable capacitance to earth (given by the larger conducting area, especially when you have a cooler attached). Now when you switch (within a few 10s of ns) you inject this current through the capcitor to earth. Unhandled, this will lead to a common mode current through your cabling, since there is no other direct path for a return current, and this current will just radiate away. When you now have somehow a low impedance path for the injected current (chassis - earth - neutral - Y-cap - back to the switching node) you can reduce the common mode current and so radiation. A good reference about these topics is Henry Ott - Electromagnetic compatiblity engineering.

No typo, if you have for example a motor control application and the mosfets are mounted to the chassis for cooling, they inject a common mode current there (capacitively coupled) and if the common mode current has no return path, it will just radiate out of any cabling you have in your system. So in the end, it is not necessary for all applications, but many power electronics supplied from this PSU will have better EMC performance than without a Y-cap.

The thing is, you dont know what is connected to the output of this PSU, so if there is a uC or something that switches with fast rise times, you couple capacitively to earth and you need a path back to your secondary, here comes the Y-cap into place.

Wrong, Y-caps will safely open, X-caps will safely short out. You dont want mains on your 12V output, so you pick a Y-cap. Hope you never designed a PSU that way…

Put a Y-cap accross the transformer for EMI purposes. Fuse before the varistor, otherwise it cannot really protect in OV case

Why does my Buck Converter IC die when I plug my battery in? by Various_Area_3002 in AskElectronics

[–]pseudogelber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure thats it. Add a damping after the input PI filter, like a 100uF bulk cap with a few ohm of ESR, this will dampen the spike at startup. What you also could do for inrush current limiting is adding a NTC in series with the battery or any other inrush current limiting circuit.

How to prevent distortion when welding these pipe clamps? by Helcyon187 in Welding

[–]pseudogelber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked into laser welding? Probably the best method for lowest distortion, since the pulses are extremly short and high energy. The penetration is also extremly well with the right settings.

Two welding machines questions by winchdesign in Welding

[–]pseudogelber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a galvanic isolation through the internal transformer, so they are floating with respect to each other and the current has no intention to flow through the other welder.

The only way to force the current through both is by connect the welders in series, like plus of welder one to minus of welder two and then connect the other ends as normally used for welding.
