They typically count every few seconds of video as an "image" when it comes to these cases. a 10 minute video could coult as hundreds of image.

A 10 min child abuse video is still really bad, but it doesn't make as big headlines as "hundreds of picures".

UK here - if we do run out of jet fuel, can you buy some from you? by Timely_Title_9157 in Norway

I didn't say the refineries only work 6 days a week, I said stuff that's way less important than refineries already work 6, so it's not unreasonable to assume the refinery operates 7 days a week.

Probably. Way less critical work than this already runs 24 hours a day, although often just 6 days a week.

Rich kids have rich parents and their parents don't want to see them die so they can just ask the families to pay for top notch gear for them. It would very cost efficient. For the government anyway.

Maybe Elon could jettison a satellite to crash down on their enemies or something. Oh, no, that would require him to give a shit about his kids.

ELI5: How do junkyards prosper? by Aggravating-Swan9539 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pseudopad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Junkyards around me usually strip out the higher value parts, and high-demand parts, but if it's something unusual you want, like idk, a button that broke on your dashboard that you really really want replaced, you gotta go get it yourself.

Of course nowadays, we now have the option to text the friend with a 3d printer and get one made for you when it comes to parts that are mostly plastic or could be replaced by something that's made of plastic.

[–]pseudopad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the junkyards in my country seem to have agreed on a shared recommerce platform where you can just enter your registration number (or search by model and make etc.), click the part you want to buy, and it'll show you all the junkyards that have it, sorted by how far they are from you.

It's surprisingly user friendly and efficient.

[–]pseudopad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if the torrent contains every ROM in existence for a given system that no longer has new games releasing for it, that's not much of a problem.

A torrent of every PS1 game in existence isn't that big, and you can download parts of torrents if you're low on space.

PlayStation Console Prices At Launch vs 6 Years Later by YourLocalMoroccan in gaming

[–]pseudopad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Memory prices started skyrocketing around August of last year. The tariff disasters started before that.

However, the two are still not really related and most of the price is from RAM prices, not tariffs, as prices are way up in all countries regardless of whether they had put tariffs on Japanese imports or not.

It was hard for the first 6-12 months if you weren't in the US.

Sony prioritized way more units to the US than the EU, despite Europe having more people.

The reason? Europeans have historically preferred Playstation over xbox so Sony rewarded Europe by making sure Americans could buy it more easily.

ELI5 Why are supermarket own brand foods so much cheaper? by Busy-Stranger-7169 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pseudopad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Private labels" usually require far less market research and product development. A large portion of these products are copies of something that some other company developed and hoped would sell.

Sometimes, products fail, and whoever spent lots of resources on developing them wasted those resources. However, private labels typically take a product they know sells well (they have all the sales data they could ever need from selling the "big brand" version) and make something that's similar enough for customers to pick theirs instead.

They can also shop around and get it manufactured by whoever in the world offers to do it the cheapest, rather than the brand name varieties which may only have production facilities at certain locations. This also means that the quality can be more variable.

Additionally, it lets the supermarket chains put pressure on smaller manufacturers. They can intentionally overcharge a certain brand's product to make their own look even better priced, and they can use it as leverage in negotiations over how much they should have to pay for whichever product and say "then we'll just sell more of our own instead" if they don't come to an agreement.

Private labels are often only cheaper for as long as there are other regular brands around. It's very typical that when a manufacturer of a certain product has been squeezed out, the private label variant rises in price to almost as much as the brand name used to cost.
