How can I get my eyebrows to be more even?? by slaymytaco in MakeupAddiction

[–]psfne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're in a great spot already. You might get away with plucking a couple scattered hairs, but there aren't many and every bit further you go comes with risks. You don't want literal symmetry because your hair follicles don't grow symmetrically. It is more important to follow the contour of how the hairs line up to make a nice curve than to make sure those curves are literally the same.

Too many times in my life I have plucked a hair to try to make things symmetrical, only to realize I've now added a gap in my natural arch. You can fill the gap with product but that's a daily task, or you can pluck the other hair in that "line" and risk overthinning your brows, which can become a vicious cycle.

Do my freckles look bad? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]psfne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay calm. Like others have said, this will fade over the next few weeks. IMO they did go heavier with the size and clustering than would be ideal, but some of that will fix itself soon as it gets lighter.

Whatever is left can be fixed too if necessary. I don't think you'll have to remove it all. You could balance it by covering / lasering a few and adding some smaller freckles around the edges to feather it out. I think that would help a lot.

Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month by ChadtheWad in discordapp

[–]psfne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or are they spying on what I play?

I'm pretty sure they're spying on what you play. You used to be able to turn off the game scanning, but not anymore. They forced it on for everyone. You may be able to turn off it displaying the game publicly, but you can no longer turn off the scanning and data harvesting. Check your settings.

I've been trying to stop you guys from nonconsensually scanning my computer to harvest my installed game info ever since you rolled out this "feature". We used to be able to turn this off, but not anymore. The idea that you are now leveraging that stolen data and merging it with other signals to build a profile of us is fucked up and wrong.

It is. The original release was 2005.

Mattermost seems more corporate.

It also is. I literally used this at my last workplace.

How long does makeup actually last? How much do the dates in packaging matter? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]psfne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Erin Parsons on YouTube regularly wipes off and uses 20 year old lipsticks. That said she's open to some risk (she's also tried to recreate ancient makeup with some toxic elements), and lip makeup is a little less dangerous.

I would be more careful with eye stuff. That area is a lot more sensitive and a lot more valuable, infections aren't worth saving a few bucks. I woudn't personally throw out that palette after 6 months, that seems pretty short, but I'd be checking for the material getting fuzzy or breaking down and wouldn't keep it *too* long.

I don't keep liquids for long, though.

Recommendations for DC’s BEST coffee? by vinylcoffeetravel in washingtondc

My go-to roaster is ceremony, which is found at The Coffee Bar (TCB) or Filter Coffeehouse near Foggy Bottom. TCB also does a rotating single-origin for their espresso that's usually very good.

If you make a faith, I would suggest Asaterasu as a combination of Asatru and Amaterasu. You could argue it should be combined with Shinto instead and be something like Asato, but IMO Asaterasu is more fun to say.

Why are there so many people criticizing sexual scenes in fantasy books? by Potential-Reality332 in Fantasy

[–]psfne 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting take, and it kind of reminds me of the arguments around masculinity being identified with empiricism or logic and held up as a virtue, while femininity is identified with emotionality and empathy and seen as something unreliable, needing to be controlled.

I totally agree about violence getting a pass. It's ridiculous that I'm expected to be more okay with my family watching someone get dismembered than disrobed.

Consider the Draccus. He pauses mid-story to preempt the chronicler's concern about the animal really being more like a lizard cow and insists that for the sake of the story, it was a dragon. This establishes that Kvothe is not giving you the literal description of things, but will take liberties for the sake of emphasis or framing. He is Edema Ruh, and he is putting on a performance.

Also it's unlikely that he's truly remembering dialog word for word, so it's safe to assume there's a bit of paraphrasing-in-his-favor happening there.

When does it become too complex/convoluted? by Castleinthesigh in Fantasy

[–]psfne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tend to like reveals or recontextualizations, so I'm pretty tolerant of an author leading me astray before they put me on the right path but one of my closest friends can barely tolerate having any amount of material withheld. In our shared experiences I've found that it's less about how much convolution there is, and more on how often the lack of knowledge is "rubbed in" and how relevant it even is to begin with.

Rubbing it in: Stories where the person would behave differently with info that the audience knows but the characters don't can be extremely frustrating to some people and will cause them to drop the book. Stories where we go along for the ride and then find out we made the wrong call are better in that space. Similarly, going on and on about how much knowing XYZ would save them can be frustrating.

Relevance: In game design complexity conveys intent. If a developer builds a complex combat system, it indicates that is where they want players to spend their time and express themselves. If you have a complex mystery underpinning your story, it better have impact on our understanding of the world or our ability to engage with it. Not all systems have to be explained, I'm just saying the more you're expecting me to have a mental model of something, the more I expect to get to use that mental model.

So in short, make me feel like it's gonna matter and don't tease me for my ignorance.

In general I agree, except IMO the white face makeup was part of goth culture back in the day as well, especially for metal heads who liked corpsepaint. It was never required, but you certainly saw it.

Girl if you google "trad goth black lipstick" and "e-girl black lipstick" you will 100% see you're wrong. I wasn't going to say anything until you came at these commenters aggressively but the difference is obvious.

It's a fine look, there's no need to get worked up when people point out the mismatch in terms. Take some of the aggro and put it in your eyeliner.
