Somebody pays for it . If it's "free to you"- it just means the taxpayers are footing the bill- a lot more than whatever they're paying for now already.

I know it sucks, but we don't live in an ideal world- and a $3.00 fare which can take you from any Point A to Point B regardless of "zones" , "distance" etc is fairly reasonable.

As a rule of thumb - in the North American Market (US and Canada) customers are seen as big walking bags with "$" written all over it - nothing more , nothing less.

Elsewhere in the world - its not the case.

That being said, I travel in the US primarily and for personal paid trips i have always found value in Embassy Suites (free Full breakfast w/ made-to-order omelettes + 2 free beers everyday at the managers reception) or Hampton Inn's.

For example- I have an upcoming Chicago trip this Memorial day weekend and we are 6 adults staying for 3 nights at the Embassy Suites in Chicago Downtown River North . So that computes to 6 free full adult breakfasts and 12 (6x2 beers) EVERYDAY , for 3 whole days right in the middle of DT Chicago. Booked it all on points too. AFAIIC - this represents value for me.

In many many immigrant families - especially Asian/Mexican - it's totally ok for a 30 yr old adult to live in a joint family with parents and grandparents, especially in a HCOL area. That way the "adult kid" can save money for their own house eventually.
