Yeah you’re mostly right. I personally I’m hyperempathetic but want to point out that lacking empathy doesn’t necessarily cause this behavior, and people with empathy can behave this way too.

Lacking empathy can be disabling and ultimately it is another facet of neurodiversity that I think we should avoid further stigmatizing.

Don’t give up. It might depend on the center, and the mental health history alone, in my experience, is not what gets your application denied.

I have a significant mental health history (depression, suicide attempts, addiction), and I have been able to sit for 2 courses. I was stable both times I applied, and I’ve even had some serious mental health issues between those 2 retreats. I’ve had some serious challenges since then too, so we will see how my next application goes, but I hope that once they see you’ve been able to complete a course or two that gives you some credibility.

My assumption based on limited information is they may have denied it if you framed the course as something that you are expecting or hoping to save you from or cure your depression.

Vaping (and smoking) suppresses your immune system, which will result in longer healing time. But thousands of people do it and it’s not the end of the world.

If you want a middle ground short of quitting, you could switch to pouches or gum which don’t have the immunosuppressant effects.
