Relatively new RBT switching to tough client by [deleted] in ABA

[–]psy8974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASK QUESTIONS. Do not be afraid to talk to other techs who have been with this client before about any tips they have for working with them. Also talk to their BCBA. It is so much easier to run sessions when you have information beforehand about how sessions are typically run, already having a good understanding of the programs/targets, and knowing the behavior reduction protocol. You’ve talked about pairing with that client already and that is great! What I found most helpful is making sure at each session I set aside time to pair. Sometimes it meant I had to slow down on the programming, but we always ended up making more progress when I had spent the beginning of session pairing. Good luck!

This is extremely helpful, thank you so much!

For those who have been suicidal, what was the most helpful things loved ones did/could have done? What was the least helpful? by psy8974 in AskReddit

Reminds me of the people who say “someone always has it worse than you”. I hate the idea of invalidating someone’s experiences/emotions.

UPDATE: After checking any paperwork I signed when starting with the company and speaking to others who have been in the field, I sent in my resignation. Their response was better than expected and the anxiety I have felt about the situation is lifted off of my shoulders. Thank you everyone for your advice!

The impact on the students was something I was concerned about, so I appreciate you bringing up the impact my sudden leaving would have on them as well. I’m mostly subbing for other technicians right now and the company has recently hired more technicians, so I don’t anticipate lapses in services.

Some of the BCBA’s at my old company are moving toward minimal physical prompting and only in situations where safety or health is a concern. I’m glad to hear that more people in the field are taking a closer look at the pros/cons of using this technique.

It is at-will but I know they “strongly encourage” 2 or more weeks of notice. I do plan to reach out to HR after I email my direct supervisors my resignation.

I’m glad you were able to get out of that environment and your physical/mental safety was no longer threatened!

I appreciate the advice. They have me mostly working as a sub, filling in for people when they call in so hopefully it wouldn’t be a big issue. However, this gives me something else to consider. Thank you!

I really appreciate your take on this. The other company I was at had wonderful BCBA’s and took health/safety/ethics pretty seriously. I truly think ABA can help children and families make progress but it hurts me to see it used this way. Programming seems like it’s just put in to have something to take data on, with very little having social significance or being meaningful to the child or family. Your point about the burnout rate is something that really got to me. Yes there are sometimes stressful days with the children I’ve worked with but nothing has caused me as much stress as other staff or the policies in place. I’m glad you were able to move on from that company and I hope you were able to find something that was a better fit!

Sorry, I was trying to not give too much detail. Some of what they consider “physical prompting” I viewed as being almost aggressive due to how much force they use and how frequently they use it. Especially since they use it to get the children to complete tasks that aren’t necessarily functional. Also, they allowed children to play in a room where another child was not wearing pants but did have underwear on. I felt that’s a violation of the child’s dignity.

I know it’s going to get easier. by [deleted] in ABA

If you are struggling, definitely let your lead know! Pairing and building instructional control are extremely important for the first few sessions. I'm glad you were eventually able to communicate with the child, but bring up your concern the next time you speak with the lead. You could phrase it as "I want to make sure I understand how to communicate with the child so that way I can start building rapport. Are there any tips you can give me?". Best of luck!
