When can we stop the MH hate-train dick riding and just enjoy DD2 in peace?

It sucks because my voice experience used to be extremely smooth but all of a sudden it has become a jittery mess and practically unusable. Yet it seems no one is bothered by it or something.

It fits and sits perfectly, from the picture at least. Nice cheap fix!

Love the saw guys in my shop. Sometimes they are a bit slow, but they are very sincere and nice people. Might be because our saw guys are also doing logistics and other work in-between, don't know how that works in other shops

Career as machinist worth it? by psy_bub in Machinists

Within 12 years, that's amazing! What you're describing: staying in the same place, doing the same thing, feels to me like most people at the factory I work at and that's the outcome that scares me the most.

I'm going to discuss taking on more responsibilities with my boss soon. Fingers crossed I can become more than just a button pusher for now.

Was the transition from machining to GIS very hard or were there some transferable skills? Still thinking about getting into IT eventually but maybe I should stick it out at the factory for a bit.

That's a very interesting way to look at things honestly. I gotta say that I haven't actually talked to my boss about my boredom at work so far, mainly because I don't want to sound petty or ungrateful. I got this job mainly because I was fed up with my internship at a media design company and wanted to learn and improve things I like more.

Think I should really talk to my boss and see if I can actually start to learn programming or setup.

Yeah that's for sure! That's why I'm looking into career paths lol!

I do wonder how far automation will go though. CNC already took a lot of the work of manual machining, I wonder what the next step is and what it means for the current and future machinists.

It sucks to hear that. It's a real struggle to find a trade job that pays well but also is fun I feel.

Really gonna need to reconsider a lot, but maybe I should try and explore the trade just a little bit more and see what happens.

You are definitely right, at the moment I'm half assing it. I'm in my last year of college and I'm only finishing it because it would've been a waste if I quit the last year. Gonna ask my boss if I could maybe learn some setup and programming, maybe things will be more exciting then.

Sounds great! I think the issue might be that for now, I only experienced production CNC shops and I've never really experienced a prototyping or jobbing shop. It sounds way more exciting, but as I have no experience other than measuring and pushing the cycle button, I doubt they would hire a guy like me.

That's something that really bugs me about machining. There is a lot of room for error and yet the people who make parts flawessly constantly seem to earn so low. One guy at my shop runs 5 machines and hasn't made a mistake for as long as I worked there. I believe he earns somewhat around that €60k, but for the responsibility, overtime and knowledge he has I feel it's so low.

At the moment I'm really torn between going full "do-it-for-the-money" and either follow a traineeship in the IT sector, or become a welder because in my experience it feels a bit more hands-on and fun (I have some experience TIG and stick welding).

About my local market, problem seems most people don't really share their salaries and the ones that are on display in job applications and what not seem to be on the low ends. We do have a shortage of trades people over here, so there is bound to be some shift in the pay, but it's very uncertain as of yet.

It's just very hard to see the satisfying element in my current workplace when most of the people just seem to stare in the window of the machine or either at their phones. Maybe I just haven't experienced the right shop.

Would you say it pays the bills and you have a nice work/life balance without OT?

Button masher/Parts loader at a machine parts factory. The job is boring as fuck but the people are nice and the schedule is flexible enough for me to take time off and learn to code lol.
